  1. Hi,

I am a US citizen. My mom lives in Malaysia and I would like to obtain a visa for her to visit me in the United States.

She is a widow and in her 70s with limited English speaking ability. And not fat bank account to show her ties to the home country.

I have paid the necessary fee and gotten the required receipt. The next step is to go online and make an appointment for an interview for my mom

I have already filled the form up for my mom but what other supporting documents would I need to make the process smoother for her? Once I have made the appointment I would have to print the appointment ticket out and send it via Fedex together with my supporting documents back to her so that she can bring them with her for the interview.

I was thinking of the following documents:

    -my birth certificate

-my pay stubs and my husband's pay stubs (mine is too teeny)

    -my marriage certificate

-a letter inviting my mom to visit me and explaining that I will be supporting her and paying for her trip

    -copy of my passport

    Questions:

    1) my state, Connecticut is one of those like New York that does authorize notaries to certify copies of a document. So what should I do? I do not really want to send all my originals.

    link:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Certified_copy

2)Any other documents that I should include

3)What are the documents my mother should bring (other than those of mine) other than her passport and national identity card? She is of the old school and do not possess a marriage certificate showing her marriage to my dad

On the website it just say to bring the receipt that show the fee is paid, the appointment ticket, the form, 2 2x2 photos , her passport and bank account or employer letter.

    Help?

  2. Currently if you go to the website it says 4-6 weeks for the passport. I got mine back last week. It took exactly 3 weeks to the day. As for the Certificate being damaged, the picture on my certificate has Writing Imprints on it as though somebody wrote on a piece of paper that was on top of the picture. My hubby's came back fine. Both of us put our certificates in a plastic sheet protector and it came back in that sheet protector.

Now my son's birth certificate was removed by the postal agent from the plastic sheet protector. It has yet to come back as he applied later. We shall see if it is damaged.

  3. Yes, Good Luck to KatLovM, KyngSilva, sakura888, and davidanhhong. Hopefully they will be done with USCIS soon.

Just for comparison, here is my experience with passport application. You will see that most citizens take their citizenship for granted or maybe we have been trained by USCIS to be very exact and accurate when we file anything.

Ok so I went to the local library to file for my passport. I have all the forms, pictures, checks etc. all ready as we are all trained to do.

When we arrived about 1 hour before closing time, we thought we would have ample time. Took a number and sat down. Long story short , from my observation, people did not come prepared. They pick up the forms, and fill them up in front of the officer or left blanks and need to fill up another taking the officer's time. Next they did not get passport pictures taken . The officer got to take time out to take their pictures which is part of the service so they have all the right. And most forget to bring checks to pay for their passports and had to run home for their checks. Do they think the passports are free? While others come with a family of 5 but only has 1 check thinking they can just use 1 check for all 5 people.

Is it that obvious that we have all been well trained by USCIS? lol My hubby and I just sat there and watch while rolling our eyes.

In the end, the officer had to keep the office open 2 hours after closing time to complete the people who are already in line. In my humble opinion, I think the officer is too nice. She should have just sent those people without completed forms back to the waiting room to fill them out and those without checks to come back another time with their checks and forms instead of waiting for them to fill up the forms there or to let them go home to get their checks and cut in while she is with another applicant.

  4. Hi Guys,

Finally, my interview letter has come!!! After 8 long months! More than that actually.

I'm sorry to hear that some of us July filers are still having difficulties with the USCIS after they have passed their interviews. I just hope that my application will never go the same route after my interview because it has been too much of a frustration already on my part not hearing from them this long while seeing most of the people here at visajourney getting their interview letters shortly after their biometrics.

Well, I guess I am the last of the July filers here to get an interview letter. I didnt even bother to join the list because I was so frustrated with the way my case got pending for so long and I could not even get an update on my pending application. I was passed like a ball, first they made me go to NC for biometrics, then they told me that my local office is Washington DC and that I should make an infopass there. Now at last, Fairfax VA office sent me an interview notice. Well, I dont want to complain anymore, the most important thing is that I got an interview letter, finally! I just got tired of talking to those USCIS hotline reps.

I have a few questions though.

    1) Just to make sure, since I am a female, should I disregard this item in the list of items to bring that says "Any evidence of Selective Service Registration"?

    2) Has anyone had his/her interview at Fairfax, VA? Do they give same day oath ceremony after the interview?

    3) Finally, I just want to make sure that I CAN STILL take the old test, or is this no longer the case these days? I'm sorry I had to ask, I've been on hiatus for a few months since I could not get any information updates on my application, I had nothing much to tell you then guys.

Ok, now I have to review again! Our Congressmen are no longer the same people I memorized months ago. And the USCIS gave me barely 2 weeks to review. Ok, I'll stop complaining now. I should start praying that everything will go smoothly from here.

    Thanks guys.

Answer to question 1 is yes.

#2...... these threads will give you a better answer : http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.ph...&hl=fairfax

    http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.ph...&hl=fairfax

    3) Yes. For people who filed before Oct of last year, you have a choice. So ask for old test.

Finally, good luck. From you grammar and how you composed your post, you should have no problem with the interview (just read through that booklet).

  5. Have to bring the application, USC original certificate, the person applying, two approved passport photos, and money. We opted for the expedient charge, just too many years of waiting. Sealed the certificate in one of those clear stiff plastic folders, got it back in nine days. Ignore the online status, useless.

Where did you get a certified copy made? Only place that use to do that is our register of deeds, but they are too busy now doing nothing. The only good the copy is, is to provide it to the USCIS with two passport type photos, and around 400 bucks if you lose your original certificate. And the only good your original certificate is, is to store it in a safe place, you can use your passport for proof of citizenship.

What kind of clear stiff plastic folder? The document protector I found is those soft plastic kind with a white edge on one side with holes punched for putting into a binder.

Also, God forbid if you ever lose your Certificate, will a regular copy of the Certificate(not certified or notarized) work when applying for replacement with the USCIS?

  6. I feel for the both of you. Usually people get stuck at name check or wait forever for the interview. Very rarely after passing the interview that people are in limbo.

Good luck. Hopefully you both will have good news the moment it is SPRING!!!!!!!

We are all waiting for the both of you and wish you well.

  7. Congratulations!

For Passport, in my case, it took only 6 days even if I use regular service.

For signature part, I got the certificate of naturalization without signature.

USCIS distributed another paper with instructions how to sign it.

Without signature, it is NOT valid.

I think according to instructions, you should sign fullname similar to one you did for photo.

For your reference, here is some info from the Internet.

    http://www.newcitizen.us/after.html

The signature on my photo is my regular signature, not full name!!! I asked the interviewer but he says to sign the normal signature not the full name. Sigh..... But when it comes to the part of the form he needs my FULL signature during the interview process he did say Full Name, Cursive or printed.

Now my full signature on the certificate will not be the same as on the photo. Hmmmm.

  8. Completed my Oath Ceremony on Friday. It was a pretty small group. Only 62 of us taking the Oath and coming from about 30 countries.

I do not know how DutchInCT looks like even though I know he or she would be in that same room.

Good luck to KyngSilva and KatLovM on getting their oath letters soon.

Thank you MoonHunt for keeping this little group of July Filers all updated and being our fearless leader.

Now on to the next step........................ getting my passport.

PS. Quick question for those who has the certificate. Did they make you sign the certificate during the Oath Ceremony? I have my certificate with me but it is not signed yet.

Says complete and full signature? I read somewhere that the signature has to be the same as the one on that picture (on the certificate) but the USCIS interviewer asked me to just sign my usual scribbly signature on the photo. So do I sign my full name on the certificate even though it will not look the same as the one on the photo.

  9. Am I the last to be interviewed among our little group of July filers???? Do I win anything? lol

Anyway, finally finished with the interview today. It went well. The oath schedule was given right after I was done. Oath ceremony will be next Friday, February 20th.

Moonhunt, can you please update for DutchinCT and me on that table. He finished his interview last Friday and his oath ceremony is also on February 20th.

    Thanks.

  10. That is fast for the US Passport. Did you apply for the passport at a post office? I am just wondering if it makes any difference where you submit your application. Also if you have a passport do you need a " passport card"?

To all those who had done the Oath Ceremony............... what is this I hear about the signature on the picture and the signature on the Certificate ? Something to do with do not just sign your picture but to write your name down in full because that is how it will be on the Certificate. Thanks.

I did apply from one of Post Office as regular service.

You don't need passport card if you have passport book.

But since I have been carried my green card for so long, I feel much better to carry another "card" in my wallet.

For signature, you have to sign your fullname in your photo, which is stick in the certificate of naturalization.

Probably you have to do same signature for US passport application.

Some people have to sign the photo during the interview.

But in my case, I have to do it at the oath ceremony because I changed my legal name through naturalization.

Wait a minute, when you say sign your fullname in your photo which is stuck onto the certificate of naturalization.............................

Do you mean they use one of the pictures you filed with your N-400 (ask you to sign it during the interview on the front of the picture) and stick it onto your Certificate later on during the Oath ceremony?

Just wondering because I think I just wrote my name in print at the back of the pictures during the N-400 application.

  11. I applied for mine by regular processing on 01/29/09 at a local post office.

When I applied for US Passport book/card on Nov 2008, it took 6 days.

Tracking system from Dept. of State didn't show up mine at all.

I saw new hiring from USCIS CBP IT job, and I applied for it.

    Let's see what happened.

That is fast for the US Passport. Did you apply for the passport at a post office? I am just wondering if it makes any difference where you submit your application. Also if you have a passport do you need a " passport card"?

  12. Thanks Moonhunt.

Btw, on my list of items to bring to the interview is 2 pictures. What are those for?

Just in case that adjudicator - USCIS interview officer - doesn't like photos you did submit.

So you have to bring new photos, which is different from the one you did submit.

Because of various reason, the adjudicator may think the photo may not qualify under the criteria they have.

Or they may lost photos.

Question for those who has already finished the Oath ceremony or going to take their Oath soon.

After the interview, you get a letter to go to the Oath ceremony. Then what is next?

Wait for oath ceremony. And don't get ticketed for speed or anything. ^^

From the back of Oath notification letter, you will find a couple of questions you have to answer.

You should answer those questions at the day of oath ceremony, and sign the bottom at the oath ceremony.

Those questions will be only applied for the period between the interview day and oath ceremony day.

As I can remember, it was "Travel out of USA", "Join the organization", "citation/ticket/arrest"...

If you have valid reason, and didn't break the rule for naturalization, it will be fine.

Such as speed ticket, and paid the fine.

But you better not have those, so you can answer all of them as "No".

    1) Get the Naturalization certificate at Oath ceremony? And or they mail it to you.

They handed out at the end of ceremony.

You better practice the sign they requested for.

It is different from normal signature. I didn't practice for my new name, so I didn't do it beautifully. :crying:

If you make mistake, they may not issue another one. :innocent:

If it's their mistake, they do without any cost involved.

But if you make mistake, they may ask for money to do that.

    2) Use the certificate to get a Passport ASAP. Do they take the certificate away from you when you apply for the passport and then mail it back to you when they send you the passport?

Yes, you have to mail "original" certificate of naturalization.

In my case, I used regular service from USPS post office, and it came back with 5~6 business days.

I requested Passport book AND Passport card.

It came back with three separate mails - Passport Book, Passport Card, and the certificate of naturalization -.

I made the copy before sending it for Passport because I would like to have the copy for just in case of mail-in-lost.

    3) Any need to change the Social Security number/card? Any different from current card?

You have to visit Social Security Administration office to update your record.

Social Security Number will stay same.

Only you have to change the status from Legal Permanent Resident to US Citizen.

You may get same Social Security Card via USPS mail, but it has "issued date" printed in the bottom.

Also I noticed that Gold "USA" letters were added comparing to my previous SSN card.

Unless you have court order, Social Security Number will be stay same for your lifetime even if you change your name or others.

Very nice moonhunt. Thank you. I will keep this for reference.

  13. Thanks Moonhunt.

  16. Congrats moon!!!!

    Thanks.

I wish that 2bornot2b, KatlvoM and you, KyngSilva, receive interview letter as a thangsgiving holiday gift.

    It is about the time.

I wish good luck to all of July filers, and best luck for you three guys.

Thanks but if the timeline posted on the USCIS website is correct, I do not expect to hear from them until at least next summer. 14 months is the estimate given on the website for those who resides in Connecticut. Sigh....................

  17. I think all July filers have a good chance to become citizens by the end of the year!

Probably for most of people, but I'm starting to worry about 5 , who doesn't receive the Interview schedule letter, yet.

NYCGAL may receive it for christmas gift since NYC is known place for slow processing because they have a lot of immigrated people.

NYC is melting pot, and most exciting place for themselve incluing, but not limited to, villeage and other SOHO areas. ^^

St. Paul is the area for slow processing, too.

It was well known by NickD's report for a while.

But what happened to others ?

Are they too busy, so can not tell us their process even though they receive the certificate of naturalization already?

    I hope so.

Otherwise, it may be delay from USCIS DO's slow processing and/or FBI namecheck process.

I hope everything goes well with July filers, so we can share the cheer-up and holiday spirit.

*P.S. : I may be slow for this week, since I'm enjoying nice weather here in Los Angeles for this week business trip.

Wisconsin weather became to remind the winter weather again.

No, no, no. Not because I am too busy to report my process. I have not gotten anything yet since my fingerprints back in August. I am from CT. Hartford office is the 2nd slowest in the country. 14 plus months according to the update by USCIS. Even NYC only takes 10 months!!! I will definitely be the last one from the July filers here. "Don't forget to come back and visit me here next year until summer time". :crying:

  18. Congratulations to those who passed their interviews and Good luck to those who have upcoming interviews.

As for me, I bet that in our little circle of July filers, I will be the last one who will get an Interview . Hartford office is 2nd in the country for being the slowest. A friend who filed in October of 2007 just had her interview this past Monday, September 29. But she was given the oath date after the interview, 2 weeks from interview date. So it is about 11 months after filing to get an interview and roughly 1 year from start to finish.

USCIS Updates Projected Naturalization Processing Times

WASHINGTON – U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced today that it continues to make steady progress in reducing the significant number of naturalization applications it received last year. USCIS now anticipates naturalization application processing will average 10-12 months nationally by the end of September 2008 – a substantial improvement from its estimated average processing time of 16-18 months first announced last year.

“USCIS is committed to providing customers with clear expectations and regular updates about the agency’s progress to reduce its backlog,” Acting USCIS Director Jonathan Scharfen said. “We are working steadily toward achieving our goal of processing all naturalization applications within five months by this time next year.”

During Fiscal Year 2007, USCIS received 1.4 million naturalization applications, nearly double the normal annual volume. In July alone, USCIS received 460,000 applications for naturalization prior to the implementation of its July 30, 2007 fee increase. As a result, average processing times significantly increased.

In response to the surge in applications, USCIS implemented a work plan to reduce the backlog, including implementing an aggressive hiring plan and expanded work hours. As a result of this effort, USCIS anticipates completing more than one million naturalization applications by the end of this fiscal year, including most of the applications received during the summer of 2007.

Last year’s application surge did not impact USCIS offices evenly across the country. Although most offices have already processed cases received during the 2007 filing surge, a handful of offices will have a small percentage of their 2007 cases pending at the end of Fiscal Year 2008. That will result in processing times longer than the 10-12 month national average. USCIS will continue to shift resources to ensure that all local offices achieve the goal of five month processing times.

USCIS field office projections are listed below. These projections indicate the average time it will take to complete a naturalization case as of the end of September 2008.
