  1. I just came across this:

    source: https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0100203200

Documents for adult age 18 and older

ALIEN: Adult Age 18 and older

    1. Primary Evidence

Request a current U.S. immigration document and an unexpired foreign passport.

    - Form I-551, Permanent Resident Card (includes temporary I-551 stamp/machine readable immigrant visa (MRIV) in combination with an unexpired foreign passport when the I-551 Permanent Resident Card has not yet been issued)

    - Form I-94, Arrival/departure Record in combination with an unexpired foreign passport

    - Form I-766, Employment Authorization card

    - Form I-688B, Employment Authorization card

The above mentioned both EAD & green card, but it doesn't clearly states whether both or either is required.

Anyone knows of a case where someone got his/her SSN only by showing EAD (while waiting for the greencard)?

    Thank you all!

  2. Situation:

K-1 fiancee visa, got married, filed Adjustment of Status & waiting for EAD, AP & green card.

In short, she missed applying for SSN before I-94 expired.

SSN local office said that she has to wait for both EAD & Green Card.

After reading some SSN posts, I doubt that AOS applicant has to wait for the physical green card in order to apply for SSN.

Info from SSN customer service: green card is needed to verify the alient registration number.

    http://www.socialsecurity.gov/hlp/isba/10/...sba005-ctzn.htm

=> AOS Receipt has the alient registration number. Why must they wait for her green card to arrive? The customer service agent told me showing alient registration number on the AOS receipt in lieu of the green card may be acceptable depending on the local office.

    Help needed:

    1. Can I verify whether she has to wait for her greencard for her social security number application?

If not, is there any official rule/procedure that I can refer to?

    2. If she has EAD but no SSN yet, there should not be a problem to work legally, right?

  3. Hi all,

We live in NYC. We are calling up several doctors to inquire transferring my wife's vaccination data to the I693A form.

First of all, many of them who called themselves US CIS' official civil surgeons did not know that K-1 visa holders need no medical exam and lab work (HIV, etc.). I have to argue with them and some could not even be convince that was the case.

Second, if no additional vaccination is needed and all the doctor has to do is transferring the vaccination data, i.e. paper work, the doctor fee is so EXPENSIVE. So far, I have got quotes where they will charge office visit fee for immigration exam. Many of them charge $140, $170, $180, $300, and so on. It's not rare to find one that will charge $300.

I think I may have to go through paying $140 for the transfer of vaccination data.

US CIS should take a look at this and eliminate practices that charge K-1 visa holders excessively!

I remember reading several posts that say there was a doctor in Austin TX who could transfer the information, mail I-693A, and charged $10 or $20. But there is also another post of someone who got drilled during the interview because the person had the austin doctor doing the I-694A while living in another place.

  4. First, it is common that people in my fiancee's country has only one single word for a name. In other words, the concept of first name and last name have started not too long ago.

Names below are random picks to illustrate the matter.

fiancee's birth certificate: TAMMY (TAMARA SMITH)

    fiancee's passport: TAMMY (TAMARA SMITH)

I-129F & other K-1 forms: first name TAMARA, last name SMITH

During K-1 visa interview, the U.S. embassy asked her to fill out:

    first name: TAMMY

    last name: FNU

The embassy claimed that the name inside parenthesis should not be used. FNU is for "family name unknown".

The K-1 visa interview went well and we are waiting for a call from the embassy following her medical exam results.

I wonder whether this may pose a problem during the U.S. entry. Anyone can shed some light? Suggestions on how to ease the rest of other paperwork processes, e.g. AOS? She is planning to adopt my last name and file a legal name change later on.

    Thanks in advance!
