  1. That's what I thought and even read it on the website. But, according to the people (I spoke with 4 of them today) they no longer issue DLs prior to the AoS. :( Simply because K1 is a NON-IMMIGRANT Visa. Doesn't matter if there is a Social Security card or not. Until the AoS is completed, nothing is "permanent". Was your wife on a K1?

Yes, she was on a K1. She got her DL back in mid-April, so unless things have changed in the last 6 or 7 weeks, I would work under the assumption that the info on the SoS site is still valid. And just a thought... perhaps showing a pending I-485 (AoS) would help tip the balance? Not sure, but good luck all the same.

  2. Hey all! I know we're not the only couple who has filed for a K1 and will be moving to Michigan. I did some investigating today and the information I found out was IMMENSELY helpful! So, I thought I would share here. :)

    Marriage License

Take the following information to your local County Clerk's Office--

MI Resident needs: MI Driver License, Birth Certificate, Passport, and Social Security Card

K1 Visa Beneficiary: CDN Driver License, Birth Certificate (long form), Passport (with K1 Stamp and I-94 Info)

Additional Info from MI State Att'y. General

    Driver License

You can not apply until your AoS has been completed.

Good luck to you all!

    PS

JillA helped a lot last night with some of this information!!! :)

Regarding the driver's license, I know for a fact you can get it before AoS is complete. Provided you get a Social Security Card and still have validity on the I-94, you can get a DL. It's all at the SOS site. My wife got hers within a couple months of moving.

  3. So I was able to get two shots before I moved, and basically figured I had to, as my 2nd one was before my interview.

All arguements about the validity of the shot aside, will I need to get the final one for my AOS?

If so, I somehow have to find the 180 dollars and a doctor in the next 2 weeks, which does not really work for me (still can't drive here legally)

    Thanks :)

We used Dr. Arnold to fill out the I-693 and were told that because my wife was due for the second shot in the series, we had to complete it. So we did. That's all I can tell you. We did find the local health department gives out the shot free (yes, free) on Monday mornings. At least the price was right...

  4. I think they are asking for your passport number.

Incorrect, they ask for passport number AND passport book number, but they make the mention of IF APPLICABLE next to the passport book number

Edit : actually, there's a checkmark box next to the passport book number called Does not apply. DS-160 has a lot of these instead of manually writing N/A they simply give you a box to checkmark if it does not apply. I like DS-160 :)

While you might be able to get away with marking "does not apply," Canada does have a passport book number. I'm the USC, but my fiance called the passport office about this last week and got her passport book number. Probably a situation where it's better to play it safe, I would think.

Ok, so I should call the passport office monday and get the book number then? I would hate to get held up because of a number :)

I've been told the passport book number is on page 3, top right hand corner. It's the number above the bar code. If that makes any sense perhaps it will save you the call.

  7. Well, my wife just called the office in London and found out that they will no longer be performing Medicals after 10/31. Now our only option is to go to Toronto.

    What's going on?!

My fiancee is calling around to schedule a medical too and to add to the list, Dr. Wiener in Ottawa is no longer a panel physician and his office said Dr. Stewart of Ottawa is also no longer doing it. This is all pretty odd...

  8. A new associated question: If we are approved in October as we expect, the NOA2 is valid for 4 months. However, if we're able to extend it for another 4 months and postpone the interview, my fiancee could wait until after her 27th birthday to take the medical and, well, you get the picture.

So is anyone familiar with the procedure to request an extension on that NOA2 expiration? Would this plan even work?

  9. Thanks for the replies everyone. It's frustrating, but we're not going to give up and resign to taking Gardasil just yet. If, after we exhaust all options, it is inevitable then so be it. We'll be sure to let everyone know if we find a loophole or if we receive a definitive answer from anyone.

  10. I think both the physicians and the consolate expect applicants to remain quiet and submit to their authority, but according to the USCIS website they are in the wrong as it explicitly says "... must undergo a medical exam, but are not required to comply with the vaccination requirements at that time. They will be required to comply with the vaccination requirements when they apply for permanent residence." So what gives? How can they call their own shots and force-inject people with a vaccine that is not even an essential health risk to the public. I call foul on that.

  11. I'm not Canadian, but under 26 and did some research on the vaccination requirements and Gardasil in particular. It is not required for the visa, no matter what the doctor might say. At the same time, it is required for AOS. Thus, if you fiance is nearing 27 and can avoid getting the shot in Canada, she can avoid it altogether if files AOS after turning 27.

This was our understanding and what we were hoping to do, as we should be able to postpone AOS until after her birthday. However, we've seen conflicting information on VJ about whether the Canadian consolates are playing by the USCIS rulebook on vaccinations or if they've made up their own. If they're denying visas based on incomplete vaccinations, to my mind they (the physicians and/or the consolate) are abusing authority and not complying with USCIS standards:

"Individuals applying for a K nonimmigrant visa as the fiancé(e) or the spouse or child of a U.S. citizen or for a V nonimmigrant visa as the spouse or child of a lawful permanent resident (LPR) (including those applying for V status in the United States) must undergo a medical exam, but are not required to comply with the vaccination requirements at that time. They will be required to comply with the vaccination requirements when they apply for permanent residence. "

  12. well, to be fair they do say that those side effects have not been conclusively proven yet...

I think they ought to be conclusively disproven before they start mandating people take it.

  13. I'm the USC but my fiancee is in northern Ontario. She'll be calling various doctors to see what they have to say. We won't bother with Dr. Seiden... We're still a long way off from the medical but we're trying to plan ahead to see if there's any way to avoid this vaccination. We've also emailed the consolate asking whether a visa would be rejected due to incomplete vaccinations or whether it's just the physicians saying everything needs to be complete. Going by what USCIS says, incomplete vaccinations should not be a reason for denial.

    Anyway, thanks for the responses!

  14. Hi all. Like many others I've seen on here, my fiancee and I have some major reservations about the supposed Gardisil requirement in Canada. However, we haven't seen any real answers one way or another, only hearsay. My fiancee (the beneficiary) is nearing 27 but will likely be 26 at the time of her medical. Taking the vaccine is not an option but neither is getting denied the visa.

Has anyone actually been rejected at Montreal for not having their vaccinations, particularly Gardisil up to date? Has anyone refused Gardisil with their physician and if so, what resulted from that?

And of lesser importance: Do all vaccinations REALLY have to be up to date before a visa is issued by Montreal or is that only necessary prior to AOS? Is it acceptable by the consolate for her to go to a panel physician here in Michigan for approval?

Here's hoping for some definite answers...
