  1. Hi,

Not to rain on your parade, and I do wish you the very best of luck in getting the SSN, but we were told by DHS at the POE that as a K1 holder, I had to apply for my SSN about 3 weeks after entering the U.S., BEFORE getting married, so that my K1 visa is still valid, and that once we get married, the marriage nullifies the K1 visa, so that it cannot be used as a form of identification. So that's what we did. We were also told that once we got married, we had to go back to the Social Security office, with my SSN card, and the marriage certificate to change my status to married.

So far, everything is going exactly as the DHS officer told us.

I hope it all works out for you!

  2. Sorry about the double post, I hit enter too fast!!!

We too, have been through this, with my fiancé's ex, relating to his 14 year old daughter.

The reason for the "permission" letter is to prevent parental kidnapping, but it is not a permission letter, so much as it is proof that the non-traveling parent is aware of the trip. This is in conjunction with a bill called "The Hague Convention". It is not an option for the non-traveling parent to withhold the travel letter unless:

1- the child is going into an unstable area (war zone or politically unstable)

2- the child, should they be injured in the foreign country, will not have proper medical care.

3- the trip interferes with the child's education

4- the traveling parent doesn't have adequate medical insurance coverage in case the child is injured while abroad.

5- the trip is to participate in a dangerous activity (sky-diving, safari, you know, somewhere where you are deliberately putting the child in a high-risk situation)

Also, this travel letter is not permitted, BY THE COURTS, to be used as a tool of manipulation by the witholding parent, against either the child or the traveling parent. There could be severe financial penalties to the witholding parent for not signing the letter, and could even result in detention for causing a "nuisance" case in court.

This is all information that we've used against my fiancé's ex, and to date, it's worked pretty well. Good luck to you!!

If you would like more information concerning The Hague Convention, try googling it, or e-mail me at carr_122@hotmail.com

Please ensure that you put something into the subject line letting me know that you're contacting me concerning this, because I usually delete all messages from unfamiliar addresses.

    Good luck to you!

  4. Will this number actually tell me if an appointment has been scheduled for me at the US consulate in Montreal?

    202-663-1225

Press 1 and then 0 right away, the menu is insane.

Yes, this will get you to the right place. It's where I called on June 6th, and they told me my appointment was scheduled for June 17th in Montreal. Yours should be coming up shortly, because our file was qualified for an interview on May 3rd, and you're not too far afterwards. Good luck!

  5. Hi,

I entered the Montreal waiting list on May 2nd, which means that our packet three qualified for the interview (no RFE's). I had called the DOS on June 4th, and there was no interview date booked...called back on Friday, the 6th et voila! My interview is set for June 17th!

If you take a look at our timeline, you'll see that we've been waiting for almost 400 days. It's been a brutal, frustrating year+, and I can't wait for this part to be over so I can go home!

Don't give up hope, because sometimes, when you're awake and alone at 3:00 a.m, hope is the one thing that keeps you sane.
