I received the reminder letter too. Maybe it's something new that they do, I don't know.

On my NOA it says "Upon receipt of your ASC appointment notice, you can find the status of you case on-line at www/uscis.gov. To view the status of your case, enter the application number found at the top of the ASC appointment notice." My guess is you have to wait until you have your appointment notice for biometrics to be able to see your case online.

My Canadian passport is still good for a few years but when it'll be time to renew it, uh, what's going to happen? I'll need to travel back to Canada to file my renewal request in person?

Hello everyone!
It's been a while since I posted, been really busy with our house and horses. I hope everybody is doing well. I moved last November and applied for AOS, EAD and AP in January. I received my AP and EAD at the beginning of April. My case for adjustment of status was transferred to California so I figured it would take a loooooonnnnnnng time before it got processed. Well, surprise, I received my welcoming letter on April 15. Wow, that's quick! In there, they say that I should be receiving my card within 3 weeks. Surprise again, I received it two days later! Wooohoo!
Talk about fast! So now I'm done with all my paperwork for a while, even have my ND driver license now. Makes me a happy person, that's for sure!
:) I do have one question though. My work authorization card is valid for one year and I will have to have conditions removed on my permanent residence in two years. I thought that what is called the green card is the work authorization but now I read in the guide for new immigrants that the permanent resident card is sometimes called the green card. Since I received my permanent residence, do I still need the work authorization card? Do I need to renew it or I can just forget about it?

I'm filing the I-485 form and I'm stumped on the question about memberships and affiliations. In my late teen years, I worked for (and thus had to take membership) the provincial liberal party and in my twenties I worked for a municipal party. I know I should list them but I can't remember the dates and have no way of tracing them. What should I do?

Hi everyone
Thought I'd check with my friends in the Canada forum first since things are much easier to keep track of here than in the AOS section.
We're getting married next week and will be able to get marriage certificates right after the ceremony. My question is where do I find and make sure I've got all the required forms for AOS, EAD and AP?
Also, I'll be applying for my SSN on Monday, Nov. 24, since it'll have been two weeks and a few days since I entered the US. Should I wait until I receive my SSN to start the AOS, EAD and AP processes?

Just doing a quick peek in here. Unfortunately, I don't have the time to read a week's worth of posts so I hope everyone's doing alright.
I've been here, in the US, for a week now and I still love it. Got a bank account, secured credit card, cell phone, marriage license and wedding rings. We'll be checking with some friends today and see if they want to be our witnesses for the wedding ceremony. I'll be applying for my SSN next week.

I have not been into the other OT for a couple of weeks now. In fact, I have barely been into VJ at all. The reason for that is because I received some PM's from someone who thought I had a problem with how things were moderated on VJ. Have you ever known me to even care how things are moderated here? I am very rarely serious about anything online. I just come for the camaraderie and the laughs. Laughter is a great way for me to chase away the blues. Anyway, it really really hurt my feelings.... to be accused of something which was so blatantly unjust. So I decided to review how I was using VJ. I came to the conclusion that I was spending far too much time with virtual friends, and needed to get out and have human contact. I had such a great set of friends back in Canada and I miss that so much. While you guys have been great, and I have thoroughly enjoyed the banter and the repartee, it just isn't the same. I can't call you up and say "Let's go for a walk!" or "Come to Midnight Madness!" or "Let's plan a girls weekend!". I really feel I have made some wonderful friends here, and I would give anything to be able to get us all together in one place so we could joke and chat and carry on to our hearts' content. But that's the thing. We are not in person. And I really really need that back in my life. I just hope I can find it.
I'm so sorry to hear, Krikit. I don't know you a lot but from what I know I don't understand how someone could say such things. I wish you good luck and that you will make lots of good friends.

Hello everybody!
I have arrived in ND safe and sound, just in time before the blizzard hit! The trip was fun even though spending 2 days and 2 nights in a vehicle gets old pretty quick!
I'm pretty busy installing everything though so I'll be on and off for a while.

Congratulations on getting your visa! Good luck with the big move to ND! I used to live there while going to school on F-1, its definitely a culture shock from living in a bigger city! Lots of open country! Where I lived in they still accept cheques for everything! groceries, gas, clothing! Its enough to drive a person mad waiting in line! Anyways good luck with your travels!

As far as I know, they still accept cheques. I know what you mean about the wait it creates, but on the other hand, for people who don't want to use a debit card and/or don't like carrying large amounts of money with them, or even if you have just ran out of cash, being able to pay by cheque is a plus in my book

We're leaving on Sunday evening, so should be home by Wednesday or Thursday. I can hardly wait!
:) There were definitely some times that writing a cheque came in handy...waiting for payday! Haha! At some places they process the cheques electronically now (like a debit card) and give you the cheque back! Yes indeed, lots of wildlife! The opening of deer season is like a state holiday! Don't expect the kids in school and the spouses take their vacation time! I am definitely a city girl! LOL Anyways, good luck to you and your future husband!

Nothing before you receive Packet 3, unless you want to start getting your police certificate, passport pictures, etc., in advance. The next big fee to pay will be the medical but that's for after you receive Packet 3.

Well I got my review and my raise, it was okay.
This is going to sound bad but I am not used to be told what is wrong with me. In Canada I was always being promoted and just always told I was doing great. Here I am told I am good but need some work. Me? Need work!? WHAT!? NOOO!
I think I have become shy and retreated inside a shell here and I don't understand why. Anyways its something I have to work on.

This thread is really interesting. I'm about to move to the US in a few days and now I'm wondering if I'll have to file taxes in US for 2008. I saved the link mentioned higher in the thread and will definitely study it. Thank you for bringing up the subject.
If you are married and moving before the end of the year you will have to file something with the IRS. Except with a K1 in your case I am not sure. Always good to check with a cross border tax expert.

Things might be different for me indeed but this thread made me realize it's something I have to check into since I'm moving and getting married in the US this year. At first I didn't think I'd have to bother with taxes before next year since it's obvious I won't be working in the US in 2008 but now I'm not so sure.
Yeah, a cross border tax expert will be needed indeed. I can see hours of 'interesting' reading ahead!
