My wife was approved and received her EAD after our AOS application. We took her passport, certified marriage certificate and the EAD card with the letter showing it was processed 9/17/09 to our local SS ofc. Of course we were shocked to here the agent tell us that they can't proceed because USCIS didn't communicate this to SS computer system.
We visited the SS ofc. on Sept. 28th and they said they will check every few days to see if their computers show this
updated information. Then they said it could take 6-8 weeks before we receive the card in the mail.
Please advise, my top is ready to blow!

hello,
All the information you need to apply for your wife's SS # is available on www.ssa.gov.
And yeah i think its pretty weird that they wanted your Marriage Certificate for the Biometric appointment, i'm sorry you guys were turned away, but hopefully on Saturday everything will go well.
And yes, they already transferred your wife's file to make it faster (hopefully so).
I dont know if you will have no interview at the local USCIS office, but that seems impossible, you will have to come to the nearest local USCIS Office from where you live for the AOS interview, they will let you know though, hope things are going good with you guys.
Say hello to your wife.
Hi,
Thank you very much for your information on the SS website, that should be very helpful.
I wish you guys well also.
Terima kasih

Your wife should be able to get her SSN once she receives her EAD card, which usually arrives a few weeks after biometrics.
I was asked for certified marriage certificate too for biometrics appointment, just to show. At that time we brought all of our legal paperworks with us, so no problem. It should be fine once you bring yours.
Our AOS was transferred from Missouri to California too and we weren't called for interview. I think in most transferred cases, no interview is called for. But it is always good to be prepared, just in case. We all know how unpredictable USCIS can be. If you do have to go for an interview, it will be at the local office closest to your home.
Good luck
D
Thanks for all of your help!
We have received I-797 receipt notices for I-485, EAD & AP. My wife didn't apply for her social security # duringher 90 day period prior to her I-94 expiring. What will we need to bring to our local Soc. Sec. Admin. office besides
her passport, certified marriage certificate and the I-797 receipts?
Also, we had a scheduled biometrics appointment at the local Application Support Center in St. Paul but my wife
was turned away since she didn't bring her certified marriage certificate. I spoke with an immigration attorney and
was told this was not a requirement for the biometrics appt. The office then told us to come back Saturday 9/05/09
but the office was closed for the Labor Day holiday. The agent did write in red ink we could come back Saturday so hopefully all will be fine if go back this Saturday.
I called the customer service support center and didn't get a clear answer on what we should do other than to mail
back the receipt notice and check the box saying my wife needs to reschedule.
Also, one more question, the receipt notice for the I-485 states, "your file has been reassigned to the California
Service Center for faster Does this mean that we will avoid a local interview in St. Paul at this stage
of our AOS?

Say hello to your wife.
Thank you very much for your information on the SSA website. We did have success with my wife's biometrics on Saturday. We also asked when will we get our appointment letter or further documents for the I-131, travel document (AP) and he said I am sorry I should have asked if you also applied for this. He proceeded to have my wife get her biometrics taken again for this. He said if you receive any appointment letter to just disregard it.
I would remind everyone to present all receipt notices once you arrive for your biometrics, the agent that helped us was too quick to rush us thru and we didn't want to rock the boat with this fast service and thus forgot to show all paperwork initially. We had no idea that this required a separate biometrics.
Terima Kashih, selamat melam
The Social Security Administration will not issue her a SSN with only a receipt of applying for AOS. At this point, she should wait for the green card since she missed the window of getting one during her first 90 days. Photo id and birth date, etc on the GC and her passport should identify her and her authorization in the US to live and work. Taking the certified marriage certificate, not a photocopy, would help show the legal name change since the GC and passport would be in different names. Thanks alot for your information!

Look on her K1 visa page. You will see there, left lower part, A# ..... that's her alien number.
You will find it below the name and address of the petitioner...
Goodluck!
Both the NOA2/K-1 Approval Notice and the K-1 visa have the A# on them (NOA2 just above the beneficiary's name). There is no set time limit to file your AOS but the sooner the better (preferred before the I-94 expires but is not an absolute rule) - this is to protect your (now) spouse's status (not to mention getting things going so she can begin enjoying the privileges of having a PR/Green Card). A couple/few weeks past the I-94's expiration is OK.
I am confused, the K-1 visa doesn't have any A# on it like the NOA2. I assumed she doesn't have an A# until she receives her green card?
What's the difference between the Nonimmigrant visa# (red# on the visa page?) and the A# (from the NOA2?) and what does the A# stand for?
We didn't see her A# anywhere on her visa page so we are very confused???

Thanks, I didn't see the A# when I last checked on the K1 visa page but I will check again.

We will be submitting our AOS and would like to know if my wife's NOA2 or K-1 visa already have
the A#. Is this needed on the I-485?
Also, we need to verify how long we can wait to submit our AOS. We arrived in the U.S. on April 2nd, were
married on June 27th, 2009 and her I-94 expired on July 1st.
The only requirement that's clear is you must be married within 90 days, nothing I can find that explains
how much time you have to submit the AOS. What do people do if it takes them 2-3 weeks to obtain their
certified marriage certificate etc....
Thanks very much for your help.

Before you get caught by ICE?
Once your I-94 expires, your out of status. Only the NOA from the AOS freezes your status.
To avoid any issues - file the AOS ASAP.
can take up to 90 days to get the AP/EAD - varies. You can use the AP as many times as you require, as long as it is valid. (usually 1 year)
I really appreciate your help!

My wife and I were married June 27th, 2009 prior to our 90 days since she entered Minnesota on a K-1 April 2, 2009.
What is the time limit for submitting our AOS?
Also, does anybody know the average wait tmes to receive her EAD and AP? We don't have immediate plans to travel back to Indonesia soon, but we were wondering how many times the AP can be used?
Thanks very much for all of your help VJ friends.

My fiancee's K-1 visa expires April 15, 2009 and I will bring her into the U.S. April 2nd. Are there any concerns with entering two weeks prior to her visa expiring? This has been planned so that she will continue working through early March and then our departure back to Minnesota during nicer weather hopefully.
I would appreciate any help or information we can obtain now just to be perfectly sure that we won't have any issues at our POE. Will the U.S. border patrol wonder why she has waited this long to use her visa even though we planned it this way?
she can arrive on the day it expires and there will be no concern.... If there was a concern then they would say, "Please enter prior to TWO WEEKS before expiration"....
Thanks for you quick response! I am aware that it expires 6 months from the day she was approved, but I just wanted another experienced opinion. I hope you have a wonder and safe and Happy New Year!!
God Bless you and yours!

Hello,
I will be entering Minneapolis as POE with my fiancee on April 2nd and I want to know when is the best time to apply for her social security card? Is there any advantage to applying prior to our marriage which will take place June 27th?
We will file for AOS, EAP & AP on June 29th so I thought it would be just as easy to wait until submitting the marriage certificate in with her application for a new social security card.
Thanks in advance for your help,

Hello, Selamat Melam to you both. Congratulations on your success thus far, our prayers are with you. My fiancee, Indra and I are patiently awaiting our NOA2; I received the NOA1 Feb. 5th so it's nice to see another Indonesian K-1 applicant's timeline for real. Did you have to have his birth certificate translated and legalized(notarized)?
We have discussed our next steps once we get our NOA2, but it's still unclear to me if she needs her birth certificate translated for the K-1 interview, and if she will need this for the AOS in Minnesota.....
God bless you both, terimakasih for any help that you may offer us.

My fiance was born (as were his parents & grandparents) in Indonesia and has lived there all of his life. However, because he is "Chinese-Indonesian" (meaning his great-grandparents came from China and he doesn't have any "native" Indonesian blood), the Indonesian government did not grant him Indonesian citizenship at birth. But he didn't have Chinese citizenship, either. The Indonesian government only granted him citizenship when he turned 18. So basically for 18 years he was a citizen of nowhere...weird, right?
I knew about this problem, but I didn't think it would be an issue when we sent in our I-129F. Now that we are getting all the documents ready for his interview, however, I'm having doubts because I just now saw his birth certificate. It's 2-sided: on one side his birth certificate states that he is a "foreigner" and on the other side (added after his 18th birthday) it states that he is "Indonesian."
So now I'm kind of freaking out about his upcoming interview (in a few weeks). Do you think this is going to be a problem for any reason at the US Embassy in Jakarta? Does anyone have any experience with this issue?
Thanks in advance!

UNITED STATES NON IMMIGRANT VISA PROCESSING DOES NOT REQUIRE TRANSLATIONS FOR DOCUMENTS IN INDONESIAN LANGUAGE.
ACCORDING TO THE LIST OF TRANSLATORS IT ALSO STATES THE ABOVE INFORMATION. DID YOUR WIFE'S INDONESIAN BIRTH CERTIFICATE NEED TO BE TRANSLATED INTO ENGLISH?
Technically K-1 is non-immigrant, but it is processed by the immigrant visa unit. The checklist asks for all documents to be translated.
I really want to say thanks again for your kind assistance. I have read conflicting comments and I believe that I will just have her get her birth certificate translated by certified translator.
God bless you, I wish you all the best!!

How do we have my fiancee's Indonesian birth certificate translated to English and legalized?
Terimakasih, I really appreciate the help and I wasn't sure if my fiancee could do it herself. She is fluent in English and or course her native Indonesian language.
God bless you both!!

RFE-I693
in Adjustment of Status (Green Card) from K1 and K3 Family Based Visas
Posted
My wife had her medical exam for her fiancee visa done in Sept. 2008 prior to her being issued her fiancee visa. When we arrived in Minnesota in April 2009, we had her vaccination report card transcribed by a USCIS approved Civil Surgeon. We of course didn't need the full medical exam and sent the I-693 with the proper sections filled out by the Civil Surgeon along with our other forms for our AOS application.
Everything was going smoothly and we got her EAD, and AP and a notice that our case was transferred to the California Service Center to speed up the process. However, I received an email notice on Oct. 20th that we will get an RFE soon. Today we finally received that RFE for an incomplete I-693 and it states that they didn't receive any medical report of my wife having a Tuberculosis, Aids, or Syphillis tests. Of course she had blood tests for these during her medical exam in Jakarta in Sept. 2008.
My guess is that the USCIS doesn't want to take time to cross reference our medical exam report which has this information already filled out, or have conveniently lost it. I have heard this time and time again. Which is the real truth here, do they not trust the medical blood tests done overseas? I assume we have no choice but to march in to our Civil Surgeon again and have him complete this part of the medical and transcribe our vaccination report card again.
Silly thing is the RFE doesn't tell us that our medical exam is lost or we have to have the entire exam again, but rather, get the blood tests for the above items. I guess that really is the whole medical exam anyway, besides updating a few vaccines.
Please advise us on the proper step to take and I just want to thank everyone for our journey thus far. Your help has proven invaluable to us. I would advise newbies to wait for the medical exam to be done in the U.S.
Take care & God Bless you all,
Jeff & In-In
