  1. Hi, I'm unsure if this ended up in the right forum but I'm giving it a go.

Things did not go as planned and we've ended up getting divorced after 10 years together. We have gotten our Swedish divorce, as both of us live in the US we need to get it validated here. I know the Swedish divorce is recogniced here but I quite frankly have no idea how to go about it it?

Does anyone have insight on how to proceed to get the divorce validated in the US? I live in Texas if that makes a differense.

  2. Grats Alaska!

Humidity... I hated it in Minnesota when I lived there. I am happy that I'm getting "eased" into it here. But on the days when we have 33c and 100% humidity and the locals call it "Spring" I just want to strangle them slowly. I had a moment at work the other day when I went out to smoke and realised it was 28c outside and I was wearing jeans and a jacket. Would never ever have done that in Sweden but it felt normal here. I am not a fan of heat so don't know what I'll do with myself this summer.

And yes paralell parking is the bane of my existance. I haven't had problems with it when I've been practicing so I was feeling like that part would be a breeze. WRONG! I had a brainfart, and as I realised I had gotten in wrong and was pulling and I proceeded to just run over the pole/cone, cus in my head it was soft and would move - did NOT consider what it represented. I did that and then pulled in perfectly. Guy who was doing my test looked at me like I was crazy. And that was that... retaking test on Friday :P

  3. Hi! Realized I haven't been in here in a while. Nice to see people are doing well. @Jayjay how is your own personal hell progressing? Any plans for your future?

I'm still trying to get used to Texas heat. One thing, that I surely didn't think of before, that has been bugging me alot down here is that I can not for the life of me find White pepper. It was in every grocery store in Minnesota but I guess they don't use that in Texas. Extremely frustrating. I don't cook much but the Swedish dishes I do cook kind of need some white pepper to taste right.

Today I remembered that I still haven't gotten a confirmation from USCIS about my change of adress, my husband got his within 2 weeks, I still haven't gotten any now almost 2 months later. Don't know if I should be worried or not.

Other than that I am working, and working, and working... On the 1st of May I have my driving test (I have not had a drivers license, ever) and I am scared out of my mind. I just do not feel comfortable behind the wheel. With Houston traffic being what it is and my work hours it has been hard to get in enough driving. But here goes nothing I guess!

  4. I'm so sorry for you JayJay, that is truely what I call being stuck between a rock and a hard place. I have absolutely nothing to say that would help, just the simple "that sucks, big time".

DCF -I payed in Swedish crowns back in the day. I believe, because there's no way I had dollars laying around at that time :)

  5. I did DCF before they took it away last time we moved. Same process just a lot faster and a lot more information available on how to work on it. Or rather the embassy were just very good at informing me of what I needed to do and by what time. The things I have found added this time I assume are added to DCF too.

    Happy belated bday Bork!

  6. Okay, I'm now almost happy ;) Started my new job and I completely love it, which is strange to me so that's really good. And yesterday we finally moved into our own home. After some annoying problems with the furniture (got two right arms for our armchair... two rights don't make a left) we now have everything built. Hubby has done the written for his drivers license and on Wednesday when I'm off work we're planning on hitting the DMV so I can try to get my learners permit and he can schedule his driving test.

Right now I'm just trying to dig up the form I have to send to USCIS for my move...

Grats on finally getting your greencard Bork! And grats LlamaInvasion on your drivers license!

  7. You haven't gotten your greencard yet Bork? I arrived a few weeks after you and I got it last week, I think 8 days after POE.

I'm right now dealing with a whole lot of frustration. We are right now living with a friend of mine, while they are absolutely adorably nice, it is stressful to live with someone else. Since my husband has almost exclusively had jobs where he drives for a living he has been looking into those for here too. Only to find out that we need to have lived here for 30 days to be able to get a license in Texas since his Minnesota license has expired. I have been hired but don't start until the 13th of feb. And to get an apartment, in the area where we want one, requires quite a bit of background checking and of course a few paystubs.

I got lucky enough to get a good hourly pay straight off the bat, but... don't start working for awhile yet. We were hoping to be out in early March, but that's just looking a bit negative right now.I basically just need to vent cus its bugging the heck out of me. He can't apply for a job until he has a Texas license, and there might be issues with the driving record since he's been in Sweden for the last five years so it might be hard for him to get a job... GAAH! I mean okay, we had a bit of money saved up but a lot went to the application process and then we've bought a car since we got here. We're going to have to buy another one by the time we actually start working and I get a license (haven't driven a car in my life).

Okay - recap... grumpy and frustrated over money, living situation and driving. Sigh.

Sorry... just really had to vent to someone other than the hubby

  8. I figured it out the day after I posted this, just forgot to update. She must have been watching SVTs own shows. I don't get why I can't watch Lyxfällan though, it's TV3 specific show as far as I know. But oh well. I even emailed some with Viaplay, being willing to pay for it but restrictions still apply of course. I'll look into the proxy thing when I feel like I have the energy ;)

We have now re-equiped ourselves with a car so we have a bit more freedom and a lot less money.

@Nola123 - I brought my smartphone over since its new and still very good but it has turned out that extremely few American providers allow you to bring your own phone into the deal. And for the ones that do... the plans are just too expensive. So I've ended up ordering a new phone even-though I didn't want to and I couldn't find one that was really an upgrade to the one I have. Yes I am very annoyed by that.

  9. A question for you guys. I really want to be able to watch the Swedish tv channels play versions on the internet. I keep getting a message that I'm in the wrong region (like I got in Sweden for American stuff) but a friend of mine who lives in Minnesota does not have that problem and doesn't think she has changed any setting anywhere or anything like that.

Any of you have a solution for me?

  10. Well I'm already here but for what I was looking forward to coming back here:

    * Most of it is food related - KFC Bowl without cheese!, anything from Olive garden even-though my hubby has learned to cook most of my favorite recipes.

    * Health care - it may sound strange coming from Sweden with free health care and missing the American way. But I sure missed being able to call and get an appointment an hour later. And getting the works

    * Myself - it's weird but I find myself being more me, in Sweden we have a different mindset (jantelagen if anyone's heard of it) and I just like myself better in the US more outspoken and easy going. I stress less which is weird.

What I didn't miss is things like having to get a drivers license (I'm 32 and have never needed one) and to get it in a big city like Houston, ick!

  11. I had my first interview for the position while in Sweden and had my second one yesterday. It went well, so going back for the salary talk. I'm fairly happy with that! :) I've been with the same company for almost 7 years now so that makes it easier to move around.

SSN took me awhile last time I moved here, very happy I have it still now so I don't have to go through it again. As I recalled then eventhough I ticked the box I didnt get it, and I couldn't go in and get it until I had the greencard so I had to wait for that to show up and then wait for the SSN. Think about 2 months total.

  12. We're here!!! YAY!! I guess I don't need to mention to anyone here that the flight was way too long. It took me about 45 minutes to get through immigration. All they asked was how long we've been married and then why we hadnt moved here sooner. Since he spent 20 minutes looking through my paperwork before calling me up you'd think he had noticed that I had a greencard previously, but oh well.

It's 21 degrees celsius and sunny. I'm happy ;) Second interview or whatever it is coming up tomorrow morning, so time to get nervous about that!

  13. That's good Alaska. You're living my nightmare right now... All the best to your mother.

Bork - Brilliant, so you're not missing Erikslund or Hälla yet? ;)

1 day left for me, I've applied for a job within the same company as I've been with for the last ... uhm... almost 7 years. And today I got a call back saying they want me to come in on Saturday to meet my potential managers and as he put it "move forward" not sure if that means a second interview or actual employment talk, we'll see! Wish me luck, heh

  14. Granted I'm not the most social person and I severely dislike talking on the phone, always have. I am a big fan of texting though! When I moved to America the first time I made friends rather quickly with my co-workers. But hanging out on our sparetime was always completely upto them. I think it took about a year before we regularly started having girls night outs where I was included. They always "forced" me to tag along on everything though, it was pretty much never a discussion they just informed me of what we were doing.

So my experience is that Americans are easy to make friends with ;) But I would expect that it generally takes a bigger effort on your part than what I actually did, I was just really lucky and worked in a good place.

  15. That small talk stuff. When we lived in Minnesota a few years ago, it started bugging me that everyone always asked how you were and for some reason the instinct is always to just answer "fine, you?". Our neighbors of course always said the same thing and as I was walking to down the hall one day and one of the neighbors that I never talked to, just say "how are you" was walking towards me. Of course he said "How are you?" I stopped, looked him straight in the eyes and was totally honest "Actually not that great, I'm tired and worn out". He is facial expression was priceless. He just gave me an empty stare and then said "you know what? I'm not doing that well either".

After that he and I proceeded to just say hi and nice to see you when we met. No more of the asking without wanting to know :)
