Nonresidents may import a vehicle duty-free for personal use up to (1) one year if the vehicle is imported in conjunction with the owner's arrival.

    from CBP

What are the implications of this to our move?

If we import after we move, then do we pay duties? I've not heard of anyone paying import duties on a used vehicle for personal use?

I do not think you will be able to register or sell  the car until you properly import it.

Is there a lease on the car currently?

    Good luck

There is no lease on the car.

Yes, I know I need TPMS installed to import, and I got some docs from the manufacturer, but we just don't want to do the import stuff together with H1B stamping..

I want to deal with it separately later.

  3. We are Canadian Citizens and my H1B visa is valid from Oct 1, 2022. We came to NY for a holiday trip for two weeks, driving into US from Canada in our car, using our Canadian passport so we got an implicit B1 entry.

Considering we will again come to the US as H1 workers in Oct, we don't want to be driving the car back and forth. So we want to leave the car in NY and fly back to Toronto. Are there any issues in this arrangement?

Can the US CBP see that we drove in, with a car but flying out without it? Is there any type of reconciliation of vehicle entry/exit at the borders? I am guessing no problems because people drive one way rental cars all the time, so I don't expect any necessity to get the car back, right?
