One data point regarding passports: My wife applied for a passport on July 31 (the day after her oath ceremony) and received the passport on August 11. She got her naturalization certificate back two days later, on August 13. We paid for expedited service ($60 extra) but not for overnight delivery.

I became a US citizen yesterday!!! Thank you all for keeping me company during the wait. My visa journey is finally over.

DONE WITH USCIS FOREVER!!!

Here is my oath ceremony experience:

Oath letter said to report at 10am at mechanics hall in Worchester MA. Keep in mind if you are going to a larger venue such as this one, the check-in time is staggered. Try to find out from the venue's website for the actual start time of the ceremony if you have guests coming and don't want to make them wait too long. The actual ceremony in my case wasn't scheduled until noon so in-laws didn't get there until 11:30.

I got there at 9:30 and waited outside the building until it was my turn to check in, was checked in by the same IO that interviewed me who proceeded to verify my answers on the back of the oath letter. He stamped the front of the letter and wrote down a number corresponding to where I have to sit in the auditorium. Hang on to that oath letter. I sat around waiting for the actual ceremony to start. My husband who came with me had to sit in the balcony (designated for guests) People continued to arrive in waves. Right before it started, they came around and collected everyone's oath letters to be exchanged with the certificate after the ceremony. Ceremony started with a slide show/photo montage: pretty images of Ellis Island and past oath ceremonies. A welcome message from USCIS, instructions on voter registration, then the judge finally arrived. The naturalization oath was administered, followed by the oath of allegiance. The judge called each country that was represented telling us to stand up as he says them, missed a few but the crowd yelled out the rest.Judge said a few words, told us to congratulate each other as new citizens, we sang the national anthem. Judge left, and they closed with the song Proud to be an American. Then the IOs went around and handed out the naturalization certificates and that was it! By the way it is possible i have the order of events during ceremony mixed up because once the judge arrived, the oath taking part itself went by really quickly. I didn't do the passport application after because I had already made an appointment at the passport agency for today.

We all exited after tripple checking to make sure everything was correct on my certificate (and taking a few pictures of course), walked a few blocks to a nice restaurant called the Boynton (named after the architect that designed mechanics hall apparently), ate ourselves silly and went home happy.

Congrats, engineer21, and good summary. My wife was at the same ceremony yesterday, and it was great. However, I'd like to reiterate for others' benefit that they should try to find out the actual start time of the ceremony, which in this case was a lot later than my wife's check-in time. It was tough keeping our two young kids entertained for two hours waiting for the ceremony to begin!

We went to apply for my wife's passport at our local city hall today and had to turn over the Naturalization Certificate, which as others have said is a little scary. I'm 3 for 3 with the U.S. Department of State when it comes to getting birth certificates back from them (for my own and our kids' passports), so hopefully they'll come through again.

Updating the oath ceremony date for my wife and for engineer21.

I guess all it took for my case to get updated was coming here and whining about it. Today I got the text/email update that my oath is finally scheduled and that the notice was sent!!! Can't wait to find out when/where my visa journey will officially come to an end

It took 48 days from passing the interview to getting the oath scheduled.

Now that the end in almost in sight, I feel a little foolish complaining! Crossing my fingers it won't be the last week of August during my overseas trip

Congratulations, engineer21! My wife also got an e-mail today saying that her oath ceremony has been scheduled. You and she will probably have the same ceremony.

The IO told me that it would be 2 to 3 weeks before I would get my oath date. It has been 16 days today since my interview. Nothing we can do but wait!

Yup, today is exactly 4 weeks since my wife passed her interview. Her online status shows that she has been moved into the oath scheduling queue, but her ceremony still hasn't been scheduled.

My wife just received a case status update--she's been placed in the oath scheduling queue. Hopefully we'll know the date of her oath ceremony soon!

I'm really hoping people going through the Lawrence office get put in a separate pool for oath scheduling and not lumped in with folks going through the Boston office. Otherwise it could be a long wait for a ceremony.

My wife had her interview yesterday in Lawrence, MA, and passed the civics and English tests. She was given a paper recommending her for citizenship, so we're very happy. The IO said she should receive a letter with her oath ceremony date in about 2 weeks.

The interview was quick--about 15 minutes. My wife said the IO spent most of that time going over the info on the N-400. Although (as expected) I wasn't permitted to attend the interview with her, I and our two young children were allowed to pass through security and wait for her in the lobby. All the immigration staff we interacted with were very nice and professional.

Got my Oath Ceremony Letter today!!

Congratulations, bennobot! That is a fast timeline--3.5 months from sending in the N-400 to citizenship!

Had my interview at the Lawrence, MA office this morning! It was super quick. Got there about 25 min early for 8:30 appointment. IO called my name around 8:25, swore me in, and asked me to have a seat. He asked to see my green card and passport(s), told me to sign on my two passport photos (the ones I sent originally -- I brought two extras, he never asked for them)

He then handed me a piece of paper with my information (name, phone number etc) and told me to verify that everything is correct, and if correct, to sign on the bottom of the page.

Then he got right into the civics questions:

1. There are four amendments to the Constitution about who can vote. Describe one of them
2. During the Cold War, what was the main concern of the United States?
3. What is one reason colonists came to America?
4. What is one right or freedom from the First Amendment?
5. Who is in charge of the executive branch?
6. If the President can no longer serve, who becomes President?

Then he asked me to read a sentence out loud: "Which state has the most people?"

Then he told me to write down: "California has the most people."

After this he went through my application very quickly just repeating what is in there, I confirmed everything saying yes every time he said is this or that correct?

At the end I asked if I should have said yes to one of the yes/no questions and he guessed right away and said: what is it, do you have speeding tickets? I don't want to know about your speeding tickets and he smiled as he waived his hand dismissively. What a relief! This was the one thing I was worried about

He had me sign the very end part of the N400 application, and he said congrats, I'm recommending your approval. He handed me a piece of paper that says passed test and approval recommended. Then he walked me out of his office, handed me some booklets/welcome info on becoming citizen and told me to have a nice day

He also said to expect the oath ceremony info in the mail in a "couple of weeks"

By the way, I also got the yellow letter in the mail saying I should bring my drivers license. IO never asked to see it.

I also brought USC husband's birth certificate, passport, our marriage certificate, our joint tax transcripts, old leases, current mortgage, etc. (as listed on the interview document check list).

IO didn't ask to see any of those either.

I was out and on my way to see my husband (who was waiting for me in the car) by 8:37 am!

So excited to be one step away from being done!!!!

Thank you!! Ok, let me explain what happened. My passport and birth certificate has my dad's last name hyphen my mom's last name. As long as I can remember, I've only used my dad's last name on all my U.S documents. (i.e, school records, Driver's license, social security and any other important documents.) When I went to my green card interview, I also just used my dad's last name. The officer didn't question anything. When I went to my citizenship interview, she looked at my passport and driver's license and she said that the person who did my green card interview should have caught it and made sure to add my mom's last name to my green card and I-485. I explained to her that I've never used my mom's last name on anything. She then said, I understand that but your passport and birth certificate have your mom's last name so we have to go with that as your last name. A hyphenated last name. That's when she asked me if I wanted to continue to just use my dad's last name otherwise I would have a hyphenated last name for my certificate and any other documents USCIS related. I said, I want to keep using just my dad's last name. She said, no problem we'll just need to do a name change. On the application, I just used my dad's last name but she corrected it and added my mom's last name and filled out the name change section. Since your spouse has both her last names on all her USCIS documents (green card) then she can keep using that otherwise if she wants to drop one of the names (which I had done but not officially thru the eyes of USCIS) she can do that on the N-400. She shouldn't have any problems. I hope that makes sense. Let me know if you have any questions.

PS...I came in there and she looked at my passport. When she told me that my passport and birth certificate have the hyphenated last names I was a little surprised. She had only seen my passport but she mentioned my birth certificate so it was clear to me that she had reviewed my whole file before I got there. She asked me if I've ever been married and I told her no. She then went to the file and started to flip thru a bunch of pages. It was crazy how fast she was flipping thru them and all of a sudden she just stopped like she knew where it was in the stack of papers.

Haha!! Yes, I did pass the interview. She told me that I would get a letter in the mail of the oath ceremony. I had to do a name change and I wasn't expecting that. She told me that my last name has both my parent's last name and she asked me which last name I wanted to use. I said, the one that I have used all my life. I tried to explain to her that it's a cultural thing, but she said that my passports and birth certificate show both last names and they are legal documents. The interview took about 20 minutes. It would have been shorter but she kept telling me that she is not used to the new from.

Congratulations, bennobot! The quote above has me worried, though. My wife is from Mexico, and she has two last names (her father's first surname followed by her mother's first surname), which I understand is typical in Latin countries. Her two last names are shown on her green card, Mexican passport, Social Security card, and driver's license. Are you saying that USCIS will force her to drop one of the last names at the interview? I've never heard that before.

I was searching visajourney for members in massachusetts that went/are going thru this process in the past year. There aren't many and out of all of them I only found one that went thru Lawrence office. The interview date was 4/24/13 and oath ceremony was 6/12/13. So about 7 weeks in between.

But that's one case, and it was a year ago.

I also don't know whether they'll put us in the same pool for waiting in line for the oath ceremony as people going thru Boston office, which seems to have more applicants and is going slower.

So I'm wondering if eventhough my case is moving fast right now, because a bunch of other people @ boston office have been waiting longer, I'll be put at the back of the line for the oath scheduling.

Not sure how that all works..

The closest oath ceremony when it comes to my timeline that I know is scheduled for sure is @ Mechanics Hall in Worcester on July 30th. That might be where I'll end up going. I haven't been able to find schedules for ceremonies at Lowell Memorial Auditorium or other common places where they usually have it around greater Boston area.

Lowell would be convenient, but I think they only do it 2x a year and they've already had one last month. Can't find when the next one is.

I got some good news yesterday--my wife's case status was updated to say that she has been scheduled for an interview. So I'm guessing we'll get a letter with the interview date in about a week.

Got the interview letter in the mail today!! Interview date is 5/13. It was dated 4/4, day after the status update. It does say it's recommended to bring 2 more passport photos. Will update when I'm not on my phone

That's awesome--congratulations! My wife will be relieved that her interview will almost definitely be after 5/13 (plenty of time to study). She's still in line for the interview--her status hasn't changed to "interview scheduled" yet.

For the Lawrence office, do you have any idea how long it normally is between the interview and the oath ceremony?

Regarding the confusing new N-400

Should those who answered "NO" to Q 38 "Are you currently a member of the armed forces?" answer Q 39 and 40 (both of which begin with "if you are currently a member of the US Armed Forces"), with "NO" or leave them blank?

- answering these 2 questions assumes you are in the armed forces whther you say YES or NO

- not answering them violates the guideline to answer all questions

Same for the many "if yes" questions. Should the A, B follow-up questions be left blank?

When my wife and I filled out her N-400, we answered "No" to Q38 and left Q39 and Q40 blank, since the wording implies that you should answer Q39 and Q40 only if you are currently a member of the U.S. Armed Forces (which my wife is not). Having said that, I suspect answering "No" to Q39 and Q40 is also acceptable if you are not a member of the U.S. Armed Forces.

JimmyHou has it right--You're going to want to save the N-400 document to your computer and then open it with Adobe Acrobat Reader. You should then be able to see the barcode, and see it update as you type in text.

Old-timer here who joined in 2007, although I never posted much. My wife and I (and now two kids) are still going strong, and she just applied for citizenship. (She was eligible a couple of years ago under the 3-year rule for spouses of U.S. citizens, but we had a lot going on with the kids and decided to take a break from immigration, so now she just applied under the 5-year rule.)

I also wonder what happened to my VSC I-130 class from 2008. I always remembered you for your many helpful posts and unsurpassed immigration knowledge.
