  1. Hello all, been a while since Ive been on here but have a question to ask, I am a UK citizen living in South Carolina on a 10 year Green Card. I was going to head back to Scotland to visit my family this year but just noticed my UK passport has expired. Stupid me thought it ran out in 2016. What is the process for getting a new passport that has expired and where do i go and see about getting it done?

    Thanks

  2. It's ok, William. I'm with you. We're out of the US one day ourselves. Might be five years, might be fifteen but we are gone. As far as I'm concerned moving to another part of the US is not the answer. The US has changed dramatically in the last 35 years and not for the better. Who gives a damn if you can get a mortgage loan for a rates comparable to the 60's? Really that's so insignificant give that the same house costs 10 times what it did then. People now pay more for health care each month than they did for a house payment in the 60's. It's true wages have risen over these years, but value for dollar and standards of living have declined. If I am barely going to get by in a country, I'd rather barely get by in a place where I can at least go to the doctor without it bankrupting me.

Bloody Amen on that one. The medical bills are unreal for us. My wife still owes $25,000 in medical bills which I honestly don't know how were going to pay off. Even if she wants to see her local GP, she has to pay $35 just to walk in the door. I touch wood and say I'm lucky I haven't been sick or needed treatment since I've been here.

  3. How is America becoming a second nation and spiraling downwards?

Don't you watch the news, read the papers?

Just a small example. You have lost your AAA rating.

Nearly 15% of the U.S. population relied on food stamps.

That's up 12% from a year ago, and 34% higher than two years ago.

I don't have to mention the national debt.

Unemployment, was there jobs created last month? No

You can go on about Europe, UK, whatever other country with it's debt crisis. The cost of living has shot up big time this last 3-4 years.

  4. Misused apostrophes grates on me like no other, but even with that being said, this is unnecessarily pedantic and quite rude. Intelligent people make this mistake all the time, and to imply that the OP is unemployable due to ignorance is, well. ignorant.

It's 'for' not 'foer'. You might be unemployable, Bob!

However, I somewhat agree with the rest of your post. Not that SC as a whole is undesirable...but that there are a lot of different places within the US which might be a better fit.

William, the wal mart story sounds awful! Did you call the police???? Obviously, JB ignores the economic climate these days, and his solution of possibly moving within the US might not be so easy with the employment factor. But if you can plan a move, perhaps you two should contemplate moving to another area. Even if the long term plan is to move back to Scotland...maybe a domestic move in the meantime could help out. Life is too short to live it miserably.

    Good luck.

Moving is an option, but not at this moment Anita. With 2 kids in high school, we don't want to leave until they at least get to college.

Soon as they are, myself and the wife are off to Scotland.

As for the wal-mart part, yes he was arrested. Another idiot who was high on drugs.

  5. First: let's get something very important out out the way that children learn in 5th grade: an apostrophe within the word "its" indicates a contraction of "it is," nothing else, ever. You make this mistake several times which makes you pretty much unemployable in a country where English is the primary language.

"America has it is pro's (again: no apostrophe for plural forms!) but. . . "

It really hurts. English, the final frontier.

Now we have this out of the way understand the the "USA" is like Europe in many ways. Imagine somebody visited Greece or Norway and tells you he or she doesn't like Europe. Life in Scotland differs from life in Spain and life in Turkey the same way life in Alaska differs from life in Nebraska, Florida, or Hawaii, yet all of these states are part of the USA.

Unfortunately foer you, you picked a very undesirable U.S. state to reside in, so you can't possible imagine the bliss I'm having in living near Santa Barbara, where we have 330 days of perfect weather instead of 330 days of rain and gray skies and more culture than I can take in. I have lived in 6 European countries but would rather castrate myself with a piece of glass and eat my severed body part, despite me being a vegetarian for 28 years now, before moving to any part of the U.K. again.

Sorry to say, but it rains more in SC than it does in my part of Scotland where I'm from. I have been in a few states but obviously not all. You can go on about Santa Barbara all you like, doesn't change the fact the America is fast becoming a second nation and spiraling downwards.

As for you wanting to cut your nuts off and wanting to eat them, instead of moving to any part of the UK, sour grapes on your part. You obviously don't know where I'm from.

  6. Stupid topic for some maybe.

After nearly 3 years in the US, me and my wife can't wait to move to Scotland. America has it's pro's but it seems to have more con's.

We are both on a good income here but for whatever reason, money doesn't last ####### here. On top of that were both sick to death of the extreme arrogance people have in South Carolina. The place is nice, don't get me wrong.

I have had about had it with all the bull$###### that happens here. Example, I was waiting for my wife to get out at wal-mart and stood outside and had a smoke. This guy was going nuts as I was smoking. I stepped back a few more feet and said sorry and basically tried to ignore him. As i leaned against the wall, for whatever reason he thought I was pulling something out my pocket so he went to his ruck sack and pulled out a gun and shouted, threated etc.

I honestly have to say this is not the first time I've seen this kind of ####### in America. Off all the bloody years, the last 2 years have taken it's toll. Even my wife is sick and tired of this crime ridden, ignorant people. She even says it was never like this until about 3-4 years ago.

Yes, I can understand that cities are like that but were in a population of 45,000 and crime keeps rising and your money is about as worth wiping your backside with.

I am seriously giving up and heading back home to the Highlands of Scotland.

Not looking for sympathy by the way. I'm just pi$$ed off with life here is in the Southern belt.

  7. hey i was advised that getting a return flight was much cheaper than getting a one way flight, which it was.

i was also told to be very sure that i canceled the return part because it would mess with my AOS.

i just wanted to see if the bit about needing to cancel was true?

and if anyone knew if American Airlines charge for you canceling the return part of a 2 way flight?

I dont think my ticket is refundable, but it shouldnt cost me anything more right?

Best thing to do is call and ask them. I came over on my K1 with a one way ticket through vayama.com. Never was an issue or a problem.

  8. Back in April this year I was in Charlotte Airport NC. I went out for a smoke and seen an ICE Officer, I went over and asked him for a light. I had about a 3 minute conversation with him and nothing was mentioned about my status.

I know an ex ICE Officer who has worked in certain areas all over the USA, he says that certain people get hit on a regular bases in certain areas.

Lets just say you get pulled over by a cop for no reason. Same thing goes for the ICE, wrong place at the wrong time and tough bloody luck if your illegal.

If your near the Borders of the US or in an area that there is a lot of illegals, then your chances of being checked go up.

As for the local police checking for immigration status, that is in only in certain States that they are allowed to.

  9. I'd love to know how many here already have driven on the wrong side of the road in America, and how many are deathly afraid of it.

Driving in the South is like the Grim Reaper being the passenger beside you. Off all the places in the world I have driven, South Carolina is the worst. I need eyes on the side of my head all the time.

It still boggles my mind how easy the driving test is in South Carolina. 10 minutes on the road doing the basics of basics.

Still can't understand how they let 16 year olds on the road.

  10. I did the K1.

However I was told to do the VWP express, which with the benefit of hindsight I had.

It is a pretty simple process but if you have any doubts a quick consultation with an Immigration Lawyer would be best.

Unfortunately on this site tyou will mainly get comments from people who feel it is not right.

I think It's time for the USCIS to update It's visa policies to 'K1 VWP'

  11. You're wrong! I NEVER, EVER heard couples having issues when adjusting status from the VWP. In fact, many times, even USCIS, the American consulates, immigration lawyers advice couples to take "the VWP or B2 route".

It's nice to see people giving the thumbs up and approval to adjust status for coming on the VWP or a B2 visa

Why don't you just tell everyone to go that route while your at it. Jump the queue, save money, you won't get denied. What was I thinking before? I knew I shouldn't have taken the K1 route

    What a load of pi$h.

  12. I just wanted to that I hadn't even FILED for divorce when my current husband arrived in may. A couple weeks after he arrived, I filled out the papers and submitted them and because the divorce was amicable with no children, it was finalized way quicker than I was expecting. It was only when I found out my divorce was final that we just decided to get married quickly because we didn't want to part. He had been back and forth about 4-5jtimes previously, visiting for weeks/months at a time.

Know one is saying your going to get denied, just be ready for obstacles that may come ahead. Applying for a petition is not a guarantee your going to get approved, whether your husband is staying in the US or the UK. Just be ready as there is red flags. Just because Benjamin was approved, doesn't mean your will. Every case is different. Again I will say, anyone who arrives on the VWP then attempts to adjust status raises a red flag itself.

Can I ask if your husband had a job, house, bank accounts still open in the UK before he flew over? I presume he had a job as he was able to afford to see you 4-5 times. If he packed in his job before he came over that itself is a major issue, It shows immigrant intent.

  13. Not sure what you mean, but he obviously can do concurrent filing (send I-130 together with I-485 at the same time).

Yes they can, but they married 2 weeks after he entered on the VWP. He may have to answer that this wasn't immigration intent. Anyone who marries within 2 weeks of entering and wants to stay,is going to look rather suspicious, well it does to me anyway. They would have been better of if they married 2 months down the line.

  14. Trisha, don't worry! Overstaying for less than 180 days is called "a grace period" AND there isn't "a timeline" for AOS anyway.

Your wrong, that is only if he came over on a K1. He came over on the VWP which is totally different. There can be so many complications for people marrying then attempting to adjusting status. As they married within 2 weeks of him arriving, he may get a lot of questions thrown at him.

First of all he can't AOS until the I-130 is approved.
