    No you won't.

Your SS is unrestricted because (I assume) you had the restriction removed shortly after you became a LPR.

Even if you haven't updated your citizenship with the SSA, it doesn't matter from an employment standpoint, because LPRs and citizens have absolute freedom to work for any employer and live anywhere they want.

As a precaution, bring with you either your U.S. passport (book or card) if you have them, or your Certificate of Naturalization otherwise if the E-Verify process runs into some issues.

Thank you for your answer. Yes, that’s exactly what I did - I obtained my unrestricted Social Security Card right after I became a LPR. I don’t have an US Passport book or card yet, all I have if my Naturalization Certificate.

In my opinion there is no real urgency, but if you are switching/applying for jobs, and the company uses e-verify or applying for anything that need verification of citizenship, the verification is usually done via SSA records. If your records are not up to date the verification will failed and then they will urge you to go update your records with the SSA. As the other poster above stated also I rather just get it out the way and be done so I don't ever have to deal with those things again.

That's exactly the situation I'm in. I didn't update my Social Security status after getting my US citizenship in April of this year.

I'm in the middle of getting a new job and will be filing out hiring paperwork (including I9) on Monday. I have a valid State ID + Unrestricted Social Security card. My new employer uses EVerify. Will I run into any problems?

  3. Hello,

I became a US citizen in April 2021.

I'm in the process of getting a new job now and I will be filling out the hiring paperwork on Monday. Of course I will have to fill out an I-9 as well. I do have a valid State ID card + Unrestricted Social Security Card as proof of eligibility of employment. Which is fine.

    BUT.

My new employer does use EVerify. Will I run into a problem since I never updated my Social Security status after I got my citizenship? Since on I-9 I will be marking that I'm a US Citizen won't it cause a mismatch a.k.a. Tentative Nonconfirmation (TNC)?

The reason I didn't update my Social Security citizenship status is because I did not want to mail out my Citizenship Certificate. I have not applied for a US passport yet.

Please help me, I'm freaking out, I don't want to miss out on this job.

    Thanks!
