  2. I understand how you feel linndy. I live in the heartland, the farm area, country rural side with very few immigrants within 50miles. With my Asian accent, people couldn't understand me at all. I live in Kuwait for 7 years before I came here and they speak English there. It was hard for me to understand them too with their Southern accent and slang. It took me about a year to be comfortable. I was really hesitant to work, to answer a phone or even to order something in the restaurant. The first few months I work in the hospital, I used to say, ' you may not understand me well because of my accent, just ask me again or tell if you couldn't understand me at all.' I finally stop when they told me that I speak fine and nothing was wrong with my English. Like others said, most people around our home probably never been abroad or exposed to immigrants. When we live in the big cities, east or west coasts, people don't have problem understand the foreign accents. Hang on there, you will be fine......:-)

  3. Just want to add few things if your spouse from Southeast Asia country like me :

    - When a daughter moves here, the parents and or other siblings expect her to help her parents back home. It took me several years to change my view on that. My husband was OK helping out my late parents but sending money to the siblings was a problem.

    - There are tasty food for us which are nasty for the Americans and vice versa. After 5 years, My husband still couldn't stand the smell of the kitchen after I fry my salty fish or dried baby sardines. I still couldn't stand the smell of sour kraut my husband loves. We finally find the happy medium.

    - If you see an Asian faces in the store, approach them and ask where they come from. If they are from the same country as your wife is, ask them if they get together, sometimes the Filipinos like to do pot luck together once in a while. Your wife will be happy to know them.

    - Find out the Asian grocery store or restaurants nearby. Yes, there are some online stores but shopping in the grocery store is better.

    - it is nice to stay at home but getting a job is still the better. Look at the potential job she could do later. It is really important for me. It is the way to socialize, improve her English, and feel independent.

    - it may sound silly, but you may browse the toilet bidet on the Internet ....:-)

  4. thanks guys, my fiancee arrived LA yesterday. how can a registered nurse from Nigeria practice in usa. entered with K1 visa.

Look for your state's nursing board, call them/check its website for the requirements. Each state has different requirements for NCLEX-RN. Some of the states require the foreign educated nurses to pass CGFNS first. The process may take several months before she will be eligible for the test (education and license verifications from Nigeria, TOEFL/IELTS/English tests, etc). She may apply as the international nurse (only passport required) but since she is living in USA now, they will ask for her SSN. When she is going to apply for a job, most of the facilities will ask for the mandatory training/course :CPR. It would be better if she is preparing herself for the exam or taking the english test while waiting for her immigration status and NCLEX RN requirements.

  5. When listening to the advice of 'carry everything from USCIS' - keep in mind that you and I as citizens, only carry a driver's license! I have never carried my citizenship certificate or a passport when traveling within USA - so think about that, when you get too paranoid. Good Luck

The police was contented by my husband saying only : I am an US citizen, without even asking his ID. On the other hand, I had to deal with many questions and paper inspections before they let me go. There are many border patrols in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and California : anywhere within those states, many portable checkpoints on the highways !! I was inspected in the middle of the nation too :Indiana. Bring the non US citizen's passport, I-94, certified copy of your marriage certificate, and all of your AOS paper (NOAs and biometric app-stamp). They helped me alot facing all the inspections.

  6. Like other advices, get the connecting flight with 4-5hours transit within USA. You may face a long line in the immigration first checkpoint or deal with your baggage or spend more time in the secondary inspection area.

You can marry anywhere in US.Marriage is a good bussiness in Nevada. They will just ask for the valid picture ID and money in cash for getting the license. The courthouse for getting the marriage license will open all weekend (friday 8am to sunday 12AM), Monday-Thursday 8am-12pm.There are many couples getting the marriage license there from different states and countries. Once you getyour license, there are many wedding chapel people waiting for you outside to help you with the marriage as soon as possible. :-) After getting married, get your certified copies in the courthouse the following day. Even if you don't have time to get ones, many letters will be mailed to you to help you on getting the certified copies.

About the SSN,some states may give SSN to the K1 visa holder without the EAD or green card. Unfortunately, in some other states, you may have some difficulties and even denial for the SSN before your EAD/green card. The SSN should be taken from the nearest local office of your residency.

  7. When your I-94 is expired and you do not have any proof that you are processing your AOS (NOA1,NOA2,biometric letter) you are considered as an illegal immigrant. Believe me....Our car was pulled over by the police border patrol in Texas and Arizona (not on the border sites even) and the K1 visa and expired I-94 are not good enough for them. We were stranded on the highway of Indiana by the highway patrol FOR 3HOURS because my visa and I-94 was expired. We showed them our supporting documents (AOS papers:NOA1,NOA2,Biometric, and certified copy of our marriage certificate) and it was ok. The border patrols are familiar with these AOS paper and let us go after seeing all the paper. However, most of the higway patrol or the police will not consider the K1 visa and expired I-94 as the valid ID. They even confuse with the AOS paper and let us wait while they are calling the immigration to confirm my AOS status. My suggestion will be file your AOS or get your EAD soon.

  8. We sent ours in Oct 2008. In the first week of March, no touched from November.

Tried to call them, responded by the machine and it said we were still in the timeframe.

Called thm again after few days, talking with an agent, got an 'unfriendly' response : we are doing the May's applicants now so just call after 6 months from the filing date.

A week later, file was transferred to CSC, followed by EAD and advance parole approval on March 17.

    AOS : still pending :dead:

  9. Hi all..Just want to share myexperience with you. Despite the other info from others on 'you can file your AOS later (K1visa holders) as long as you marry within 90 days from your arrival time' , we filed our AOS before my I-94 expired. For the last month alone, I had been through the checking points by border patrols(Arizona and Texas) and the Indiana highway patrol. They were not happy with my expired I-94 and still raised their eye brows with our marriage certificate. I handed over all my AOS paperwork (NOA1 and Biometric appointment), we were strandedon the roadsides for almost 3hours while they were waiting for my 'legal status' from the supervisor and the immmigration office. Have your AOS/EAD filed, bring your USCIS NOAs anywhere with you, and get to know your alien number. Summer is coming and the police will be everywhere. You may be safe by staying at home....but who want to stay at home whole summer?

  10. Had the biometrics yesterday in St.Louis. Appointment letter is a mandatory. It has the bar code for checking your file. I saw the officer scanned the bar codes (AOS and EAD). She asked my passport and I handed over my marriage cert since I applied with my married name. She said it is not necessary because my husband's name is written on my K1 visa as the petitioner. Well, since it took 2 hours to reach that office, we brought the marriage certificate to be prepared. Excellent service. Good luck to everybody.
