  1. Thank you, Nia and Neon, both for your responses.

I went back to the instructions http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/i-485instr.pdf and on page three it talks about criminal history. I assumed all that meant they wanted another report to prove she hasn't become an international terrorist or a woman of negotiable affections between now and last March. However, I see a lot of "if's" in there so maybe I'm just so terrified of INS, I read the worst into everything.

    Thanks again!

    Come to the dark side.

    We have cookies.

  2. Hello again, everyone. I've searched this lovely website and all the guides but did not stumble upon the answer to this question.

Fiance' is arriving in 10 days and I am putting the final red tape requirements together for the I-485 adjustment of status. It appears a police report is required however she gave the origional to the US Embassy folks with the fiance' visa application many months ago.

Does anyone happen to know if that report is inside the mysterious 'packet' she was given by the embassy? If so, will it be good enough even though it was done in March? What all is in the mysterious packet? Are there any documents that shall be needed for the I-485?

Getting a police report in Finland is a rather involved process and time grows short.

  3. Now you tell us you are rich & don't care about fees. One might not have to wonder too much why your first overseas marriage didn't work....

Ah, a lie and then a personal attack.

Relatively well off does not mean "rich" or "don't care about fees". Oh, and I'll insult INS any time they deserve it. As for not doing research, why yes... I'm just totally making everything up.

Anyway, thanks to the folks who've offered good advice. For those who wish to meekly submit to bureaucratic authoritarianism... well, good luck. It's certainly the path of least resistance.

Sorry for the hubbub, Cat lady.

I'm off to absorb more abuse from Joy.

  4. Members support members in this group. The OP offers no support. Instead, the OP offers screams and tears for the shoulders of others without contributing so much as a timeline to the group. Even the tears and screams are irrational. The first advice was the best. Zanex or something stronger.

You might try reading for comprehension. Go on, give it a go.

See, unlike many folks, I'm relatively well off and so can afford the pointless ####### and fees of petty bureaucrats. The fiance visa is done and now it's on to more repetitive, pointless bullshit... for several years.

Once it's over and the fiends are no longer a threat to us, I'll continue on and fight them any which way I can figure out how. So who here is offering real support? You and your hypocritical "Members support members" where in you've suggested alternately drugging me or kicking me out of my country... or me, someone who has had enough of INS bullcrap and will go on to raise bloody hell about it so that in the future, maybe people won't be faced with years of pointless, reptitive and ever more expensive shyte?

  5. Thanks, Feather. You've answered some questions already... I'm gonna have to provide duplicates. My other questions are probably local quirks only Joy can answer such as can we just do the fingerprints and send them in?

Fiance & I are going to California and then on a month long honeymoon visiting family and such. I don't want to miss an appointment to get her fingerprints done (again, they were done in Finland already).

Oh, what the heck is a 'lock box'? There appears to be two addresses to send the status adjustment form... I remember the Lincoln, Nebraska address but now there is a 'lock box' to send it to in an entirely different city.

The work permit is free now but that application gives a different address from the AoS application... I'm afraid they'll bounce it back if I don't include a fee.

It doesn't have to be like this.

  6. Holy #######. Get a grip, OP.

What 'pit of hell' is this you are referring to, incidentally? And if your fiancee is really from Finland, I seriously doubt that the two of you are going to have to endure a particularly gruelling immigration process. It's not as though Helsinki is right up there on the list of super-high-fraud consulates, unless I'm very much mistaken.

Have you even filed anything yet? Or is it just the fact of having to go through the immigration process at all that has you foaming at the mouth? I'm sure you've heard the phrase 'pick your battles'... might be a good idea to stop whingeing and wait until you're up against an actual, real, you know... problem.

The pit of hell is the INS building, Anchorage, Alaska. The demon I'll have to face is named, ironically, "Joy", who during my last unfortunate visit, told me my fiance is "just after my money just like the last one".

Fiance' visa has been approved, she arrives in a couple of weeks. I'm now trying to wade through the utter bullshit involved in the adjustment of status wherein we have to provide, apparently, duplicates of everything we already provided for the demands of the fiance' visa.

  7. I think Alaskaone is just frustrated and blowing off some steam. I would just let it go.

Yes, that's spot on because in a few hours I have to go into the pit of hell and ask them questions. Prior to entering the pit of hell, I'll have to pass through a pointless "security" where the metal detector will go off on my zipper and two old, unarmed security guards will wave the magic wand over my crotch until they figure out it's a zipper and not a nuclear weapon.

Then I'll have to go in and attempt to speak with a lazy, arrogant and sanctimonious piece of ####### who will tell me, again, that most foreigners just marry americans to get money.

I'm going to have to smile and be polite while talking to this creep through bullet proof glass and the positve air pressure inside will blow her foul breath out all over me.

So, yes... I'm letting off steam because if I don't then maybe I'll get snarky and the ###### will throw my file in the shredder. I'd even take some of those zanex or whatever the hell you stalinites are trying to drug me with just to ease this ordeal. If I drank, I'd have a couple of beers or whatever is good for numbing me down enough to stay calm.

The ####### they're putting us through is so utterly, utterly pointless.

Is that the America you folk want? A police state? A government so damned intrusive and pointless that they have to hide behind bullet proof glass and old men with metal detectors?

  8. If I had a problem, I would do something about it - you won't even write to your congress(wo)man. Nothing gets done whining away on an internet message board, but that's all you see fit to do. Wonder who the real coward is then?

You're laboring under a false assumption. Stevens, Murkowski & Young have all heard from me the last time I went through this wretched process. INS lied to us (my ex-wife & I) which ended up costing us over $8 grand and 6 months... and they ignored my representatives attempts at intervention on my behalf.

I've worked with Stevens, Murkowski & Young trying to reign in the EPA's ban on modern diesel engines... the EPA ignored them.

The lesson there is the bureaucracies are not under the control of congress. INS or whatever those fiends are calling themselves these days, are a bureaucracy... as vicious and dastardly as any other.

I'm glad you're all happy happy joy joy at your mistreatment. Good for you. Perhaps you don't care how bad things are going to get for the next group coming through a couple years down the line. Today adjustment of status is just a thousand dollars. Ten years from now it'll be $10,000 but so what?

I'm looking for a way to fight. If you've got no ideas other than submission then I'd appreciate it if you would keep your love of bureaucratic authoritarianism to yourself.

Just look at that! This poor couple, they began in March, 2002 and won't be done for another couple of years!

Does that seem anything close to reasonable? Does it seem anything near to just? What is the point in all those wasted years, all those endless fees, reams of duplicate paperwork, anxiety, fear and uncertainty?

We're not criminals. We're not dangerous. We didn't bomb anyone, we didn't hijack any aircraft, we aren't plotting anything.

We're just trying to get married.

  10. Folks, we've all paid taxes... 31% off the top for most of us plus about another 20% in hidden taxes on goods and services. Why are we being milked again?

We want to marry someone. That's it. 9/11 was done by people approved by the feds to come to our country. Who has been punished? Nobody working for the Feds, that's for certain.

We're trying to get married and live happy ever after, that's all. USCIS is using it as an excuse to extract revenue from us.

All that can be reasonably asked of us is the following; a tax return (have ya got a job to support your new wife/husband with?) and a criminal background check on the fiance'. That's it. No more.

This wringer INS wants to smash us all through is just plain cruel and pointless.

Well, that's now how it is, and it's not going to change (and INS is no longer a department that exists), so either put up or shut up.

"That's how it is and it's not going to change."

Says you. What a cowardly attitude. Put up or shut up? Do you want photos of the building, sweetie? Photos of the people inside the building, darling? It's the same building and the same people. I went through this whole damnable process ten years ago and in the decade past it's only gotten worse and ten times the cost in money and bloody pointless paperwork.

You want to bend over and lube up, fine. I've got to do the same thing but the difference between us appears to be that you like it and I don't. It's precisely your sort of attitude that has allowed the feds to spiral so far out of control.

They work for us. We do not work for them. How dare you forget that.

  11. Folks, we've all paid taxes... 31% off the top for most of us plus about another 20% in hidden taxes on goods and services. Why are we being milked again?

  12. We are required to beg and bribe and perform leaps through burning loops of red tape... why? Why do we allow this? Why do we tolerate it? Why are we meekly complying with it?

As the INS thug behind the bullet proof glass in the Anchorage office so snidely informed me, 30 years ago this ####### did not exist. You got married and when you returned to the states, you informed the feds of that fact. The end. Maybe that's true, maybe it's not but either way, I'm fit to go postal trying to comply with endless, redundant demands.

And now I see they've jacked the price up over 100%. So nice I get to pay out the ears for federal goons to abuse my fiance' and I for years to come. I just cannot express my outrage, my absolute hatred of all things INS. How dare they.

Isn't there anything to be done about this? My god! I've got to go into that wretched cesspit and smile big and talk polite and thank them oh so much for their abuse and contempt because if I don't, "Oh, dear, your file seems to have been lost. You'll have submit everything again and meanwhile, we're going to imprison your fiance' and send her back to Finland".

GHAAAAA!!! Am I the only one near to blowing a gasket over their pointless bureaucratic bullshit? There has got to be some way to stop them. Appealing to senators and congressmen is pointless, they don't run any of the bureaucracies and most of them are lame ducks right now, anyway. There has got to be something...

    It has got to stop.
