    Turkey headscarf ruling attacked

    Turkey's ruling AK Party has attacked the Constitutional Court over a ruling on headscarves.

    The court blocked moves which would have allowed headscarves to be worn at universities. Judges said the move violated Turkey's secular principles.

    But AK Party deputy chairman Dengir Mir Mehmet Firat said the court had itself breached the constitution.

    He said it was authorised only to examine laws passed by parliament, not rule on their contents.

    He was speaking after Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan chaired a six-hour emergency meeting of top party members.

    "The decision is a direct interference with parliament's authority," said Mr Firat. "It is a violation of the rule on the separation of powers."

    Secular cornerstone Hundreds of people, many of them women in headscarves, protested in several cities across Turkey on Friday to express their anger at the court's move.

    The court said the government's move to overturn the ban violated the constitution's secular principles.

    The ruling could foreshadow the outcome of a case in which the AK Party could be banned, correspondents say.

    Turkey's chief prosecutor says the ruling AKP is "the focal point of anti-secular activities" and is seeking to have it disbanded.

    Some 71 members of the party, including the prime minister and the president, could also be banned from belonging to a political party for five years.

    The prosecution case cites the constitutional amendment allowing girls to wear headscarves to university as evidence that the AK Party - which has Islamist roots - has an anti-secular agenda.

    The government argues that banning headscarves at colleges stops many Muslim girls being educated and says it is a matter of personal freedom.

    The Turkish press agreed that the ruling upholding the headscarf ban had been Mr Erdogan's "greatest political defeat" since the AKP came to power in 2002.

    Some within the AKP believe members will have to set up a new party only a year after it won a convincing poll victory, says the BBC's David O'Byrne in Istanbul.

    For some ppl this is the only place they can come and talk because they do not have any other support group.I did not post personal sstuff about my relationship because it went from great to shaky to over so fast(after almost 2 years) I did not know what hit me. I was wrecked and out of it for a few months. Getting advice from anyone is about flittering it is like a salad bar you put on your plate what want and leave what you don't. If advice is sincere and well-meaning then it is always welcomed.

    Who can do Bush's job better?Hmmmm let me see a one arm blind deaf monkey. He is a liar, a warmonger,and a hypocrite, people refer to him as the leader of the "free world".That is a joke,he could not lead himself out of a brown paper bag.Granted some of the economic issues we are having did not start with him but I don't see him trying to make a dollar out of 15 cent.And as for him going to Harvard I have TV shows where animals are trained to certain task, you give something a treat and whack it on the nose enough times sooner or later they will learn.Bush as managed to drive an even bigger wedge between the US and Arab countries. This man just sends me over the edge everytime he speaks.And when he tries to form a thought we hear his brain rolling around his head like a marble and when he actually gets his empty thoughts to his mouth to form words and gets a sentence it soulds like the teacher from peanuts(whaa-whaa-whaa). Thank goodness he cannot use a horrifying tragedy to BAMBOOZLE the American public again.Lets just all hope he leaves office and does not cause many more catastrophes.

    Dating is a sticky subject and neither a son or a daughter is allowed to date in Islam. So if he feels in the future it will be ok for your son to have a GF it is not.I think that it is harder for Westerners(me included) to understand the concept of no courtship because to us how else do you get to know your potential mate if not to court them. Islamically when the time comes when a child is ready for marriage he and/or she should go to their parents and tell them that they are ready for marriage and the parents should help them find a suitable mate.They have the right to reject the person if they do not feel that person is the one they want,then when they have decided on the person then getting to know one another phase needs to be in a controlled enivorment to ensure that everyone stays chaise. I did not get this nor understand this until I became Muslim but it is to ensure that no unnecessary sin befalls either party.I understand what you are saying about your husband not because as religious as his recent words may have implied but he wants better for his children and he is trying to give them a better foundation.

    wahrania sometimes we can only be concerned with the issues into our own little bubble and if ganja has experienced a trauma and is causing her some disstress she has that right and you cant except her to address issues some place else.Her pain is not like your pain or my pain.Please instead of critizing her and judging her sitation give her a little support.Why are you starting drama?

    I feel as adults we have our own minds and the right to read,see and hear what ever we wish but as for our children it is our duty to keep them away from things in the world that they are not mature enough to process and understand.I also think that children should be allowed to grow and learn but I don't think that can happen in a closed society.As children get older they should be allowed to see the world and experience different things,I want my children to be raised here so that the freedom to chose what they will or will not allow to be apart of their conscientiousness as they grow and learn,it is not my right to tell I can guide them and give them morals and values but at some point they will become their own person and will have to decide if what reading materials and different art forms appeal to them based on who they are and how they live their lives.

    There are books that some state here have tried to ban like Huck Fin,To kill a Mockingbird,Valley of the Dolls,Forever by Judy Blume.And there have been certain works of art that people have tired to ban like the Danny Simmon's verison of The Last Supper,and there are other examples in American cultural of various art forms that people have tired to censor or ban.But I think this is senseless because we need different voices and view points to help humanity to continue to grow.And art and books allow people to express themselves and express what they see in the world around them.Music,visual art,books and poetry show the beauty and the pain of the world and sometimes gives a voice to the voiceless so I do ever want to live in a place where that does not exsist or I am told what I can read see or hear because that is the same as telling me what to feel,think and believe.We have never talked about it but is food for thought and something that we might need to talk about.
