  1. I haven't seen anyone suggest that the marriage should take place no matter what. Relationships fail. The majority of them, anyway. People should never, ever get married unless they both want to and are committed to making it work. It's much better to figure out that it's not going to work in those first 90 days rather than AFTER the marriage, of course. I think most people are just saying, don't go through with this visa process unless you're 100% sure this is what you both want. It's not intended to come over to the US and see what happens, it's for people who have already made the decision. That being said, sometimes that decision isn't the right one, and by all means, they should NOT get married if that happens to be the case.

I agree. Life is sometimes sad. Be committed before you sign the documents, but if it doesn't work out, don't pursue the marriage (even if, unfortunately, that requires the beneficiary to return to his or her home).

  2. Would it not be unethical for a USC to NOT cancel the wedding (and subsequent AOS) if he or she determined that the marriage was not going to work out? Sure, people should always try to work out their differences before resorting to drastic measures, but what if it just isn't going to work out? It seems like the argument for some (not all!) is less "think before you petition" and more of "follow through if you petition no matter what."

  3. I had this discussion with a work colleague of mine last week. Honestly, it depends on the maturity of the child. If you'd like more information, I can PM you and give you more details. I just want to avoid posting spoilers here for those who have not already seen it.

  4. Just out of curiosity - in the interview envelop, there was a checklist page included. Does everyone get that? In addition, my interview notice contained a list of things to bring to the interview.... I was planning on taking everything I have but it is good to know ahead of time...

    cheers!

    We did not get this.

  5. Hi guys,

I wanted to share my interview experience. We arrived at Oakland Park, FL an hour before my appointment on 09/15/11. The building of the USCIS was full of people and that’s why I parked and left my wife in one of the restaurants 5 minutes walking distance away from the USCIS building. I guess they had an oath ceremony because one of my friends had her oath the same day. There were two lines of people – one for interviews and one for the oath. So I went through the security and I checked in 20 minutes before my scheduled time and I went in a big hall full of people waiting for interviews and info passes probably and that made me think that I was gonna be waiting my turn forever but I was wrong cause 5 minutes after I had sat down a young Asian officer came and called my name. He was nice and professional. As soon as I walked in the office he swore me in and we started with the test first.

    1. What is the rule of religion?

    2. When was the constitution written?

3 Which ocean is on the east coast?

    4. State that borders Canada.

    I don’t recall the last 2 questions…

He made me read the sentence: Which state has the most people?

And I had to write the answer: California has the most people.

He started going through the application then asking question by question. He asked me to sign all the extra pages used for extra spaces to answer certain questions like jobs and addresses for the last 5 years. It was good that we had requested my wife’s birth certificate online because for some reason when moving from our previous place we had lost it so he wanted to see the original and I gave him a copy that I had ready in my folder. He didn’t want to get the selective service card but the online confirmation print out only. I also gave him a clean arrest record report from the sheriff’s office. I told him that he could have the entire folder if he wanted :D .

He gave me a piece of paper to make sure that my information is correct and let me sign my photos and I asked him then which one it will go on my certificate and he said it was gonna be the one from Biometrics but he told me that if I wanted the one I signed it was gonna be glued not imprinted and I chose the Biometrics one. He said he liked it much better.

He made me sign my application and he said he was recommending me for approval and he put a big red stamp on it. He said he should tell me that I have to wait for my oath 180 days but It was actually gonna be less than 2 weeks. I asked him why I should wait that much when my friend had her oath today and her interview was a week ago. He replied that every case is different. He also asked where my wife was and I said that she was waiting for me in the restaurant. He said that she must be really hungry :). I just did not want her to come in that big crowd in front of USCIS and I knew it was not required but I could always bring her in if needed. You can’t have a cell phone in the building. When we went for AOS we had a friend to grab our cell phones cause otherwise the security told us to throw them away!

GOOD LUCK AND CONGRATS TO EVERYBODY!

    Yayy!!! Congrats!!!

  6. Still taking me time to get use to not recording trips or searching for evidence, been brainwashed by the USCIS. But is our lives for over six years when dealing with the USCIS.

This is so so so true!!!

It is taking time for us to get used to being just normal citizens, not worrying about saving every shred of evidence.

  7. Thanks for the replies everyone.

I posted this question just to ensure that the SSA would not need to retain my wife's CoN. Beyond that, I agree with Bob about applying for both the Card and Passport Book if finances allow. This affords the new citizen three distinct pieces of citizenship proof (plus, the passport cards just look cool IMO).

We'll be applying for my wife's new passport this week ... our fingers are crossed that the CoN makes it back to us.

  8. Hello everyone! Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere, but a quick cursory search didn't yield any hits ...

When you update your social security records, does the SSA need to keep the original naturalization certificate? We're trying to determine if we want to handle SS before we apply for a passport.

    Thanks much!

  9. I have my oath taking on 09/22/11 (Congratulations to me!!) at 2PM here in San Antonio, TX. I have a class at 5pm that day and an exam that I cannot miss.

It says on the notice I have to show up there at 11:45AM then visitors can come in at 2pm for the ceremony. My main question is how long is the proper ceremony?? Is that like an hour or two? I know it depends on how many names they will call but would that even take 2 - 3 hours? Please let me know if you have an idea because I cannot miss my exam that day. Thanks a lot.

Ours was 45 minutes long. Guests came in initially with the candidates. Just before the ceremony began, all of the candidates were summoned to the back of the waiting area and approached a table of USCIS workers who did final verifications and had each candidate ensure proper spellings on the naturalization certificates. YMMV.

  10. Congrats! How was the interview?

It was shocking how fast it was. When my wife walked out with our attorney, I honestly thought something had gone wrong. We arrived early and they called a few people who arrived after us before us (no big deal). Each of their interviews seemed to last about 20~30 minutes. When my wife was finally called, it must have been something like 10 minutes. The AO was very nice and friendly. No problems at all.

    Glad to be done!!!!
