I would recommend that you do not wait to receive instructions in the post, once the automated system says that an instruction has been generated, you can put together all its requirements and send it to NVC. The only exception to this rule is the IV Bill.

Thanks and I have heard of this but what is a IV Bill?

The IV Bill is the immigration visa fee which is required from petitioner/beneficiary. You can not make this payment without the NVC generated invoice.

Can a guy add to this? I will.

I noticed most of the posts are from girls/ladies/women. You know what I mean. So here is something from a guy. What do I think about when I miss my missus? I will list two:

Firstly, I go through the pictures of us on my phone. Particularly the one I took of her while she was asleep. Looking all so chilled, reminding me of all the reasons why I am crazy about this woman. I have got one of those PDA phones, with the camera and huge screen that even lets one zoom in to pics. So I get to zoom in and take a closer look. Enough details for now…

Secondly, I think of one particular visit of mine to New York. It was a Friday and relatively quiet at work. By the way, this is in London. Right about lunch time I got an email advertising unbelievable flights to NY. So I called my brother-in-law (her brother in NY) and told him I was going to make a surprise visit, so he could pick me up at JFK. So I left the office, picked up a few things at home and caught a 4pm GMT flight and was in NY by 6.30pm EST. Her bro got me at the airport and we were home by 8pm.

Before I go on, you must understand that my missus is not use to surprises like this. She wasn’t expecting me in NY for another, maybe, 3 weeks. My/our flights are usually booked weeks/months ahead. She says I am a very organized person.

Anyway, so I arrived at the apartment and walked into the living room. I remember she was with a few friends and family watching the BET channel on TV. She said hello to her bro and then froze when she saw me. Then she started pacing backwards away from me and was looking around. I learnt later that at this time she was trying to confirm that every one in the room could knew I was there. She thought I was a ghost or something and was scared.

By this time, I realized or confirmed just how fragile she could be. So I walked up and gave her hug. You know the mushy details. With her slender arms around my neck, her heart still beating and the mixed look of surprise and elation on her face, I knew I would never forget this particular visit. I think of this day quite often.

Not long after this trip, we decided it was better if I moved to the US.

I must agree that having pictures does enhance my experience of using VJ. It makes the whole visa application process a bit more personal and feel more like one is sharing experiences with real people. It does make a difference. Or maybe i am just a picture person. However, I understand people who are worried about security.

Two pictures I have come to recognise while using VJ, though they are actualy strangers to me in real life, are:

I know I come up with all sorts of crazy plans and I mention them on here sometimes. My new plan has to do with us moving back to England in the next year or so for me to go back to school and Neil to work there. I wondered if I'm a permanent resident there am I eligible for funding for college? university? This is just a crazy plan/brainstorm and may never happen but I just wondered if anyone knew anything about this. Also, how hard is it to get a visa for me to live in the UK since we're already married?

I agree that it all depends on how you present yourself. When I started at uni, I started and completed a 4 yr degree as a foriegn student because I had not been a permanent resident in the UK for, I think, 2 or 3 years (something like that).

The foreign student fees depends on the university and the degree you want to study. It can vary considerably from university to university. In my case I studied for a Bachelors and then a Masters in Engineering at Kings College, London and it cost me £9,750 per year on tuition. This was back in 1997.

My advice or view is ask yourself the following questions:

1 - Can you wait the 2 or 3 yrs as a permanent resident so you can be eligible for funding?

2 - If you imagine the total foreign fees to be a loan from the bank that you have to pay back in bits on graduation, how long will it take you to pay it back? Its a typical case of ROI (Return On Investment).

What I did was download the form from this site
http://www.met.police.uk/dataprotection/forms.htm

Then took it into my local police station with the £10 fee. They sent it off and i received the certificate back in about 30 days. I think you can also send it to the address provided.

That's exactly what I did as well. Downloaded the form, filled it, took it to a police station near my office (in London west end) along with £10. It arrived earlier than the suggested 30 days.

I have looked/searched for but have not been able to find the complete James' Shortcut version 2.0. Any body have an idea?

I have seen bits and pieces JSC 2.0 info in a few threads, talking about updates, but not the complete instruction. Does this exist or maybe we need some form of version control.

If the complete JSC 2.0 does not exist I will be more than happy to give a shot at updating it if necessary!

Thanks for that RandyandRina. I have always used JSC 1.0, I have looked/searched for but have not been able to find the complete JSC 2.0. Any body have an idea?

Hi all,

I spoke to an NVC operator yesterday and was informed that my DS-230 form and instruction has been sent by mail. Woohoo! However, previous experiences tell me this could take another 3-4 weeks to arrive.

To save time so I can, hopefuly, complete at NVC before Christmas, I will be using James' shortcut. I have generated my barcode sheet and also collated all documents as stated on the DOS website . See below:

Completed DS-230 form
Barcode sheet
Cover letter
Birth Certificate
Marriage Certificate
Marriage Termination Documentation
Photocopy of Valid Passport Biographic Data Page
Police Certificate(s)

My questions are or I was wondering if you guys can confirm:

Am I missing anything else?
Is there a UK based beneficiary & US based petitioner who have completed at NVC that can advice if I am following the right procedure?

Ok, for some reason I can't find clear/direct answers to this question. I have read, read and read! So accept my apologies if this question has been answered already.
Intro: I was born in Nigeria and was living there, for years, after the age of 16. I am a UK citizen, I am currently and have been based in London the last 10 years.

Question: Please could anyone tell me if I need a police record from both the UK (London) and Nigeria or do I need one from just the UK?

I have read the list/requirements at http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/info/info_3195.html But it is not clear to me.

you dont need to travel to nigeria for police cert. just get ur fingerprint done wherever u live now and make a photo page of ur nigeria passport and two photograph passport then mail it to ur relative in nigeria they will get it done for u at alagbon, it might cost them almost #7,000 been that u re not present. but mind u nigeria police cert valid for just three month, that is how i got my done.

Thanks for your suggestion kc4them, I am looking into to this option. I will get my finger print done in London through Scotland yard and then have it sent to Nigeria with copies of my passport and passport photographs.

This will workout even cheaper, almost sounds too good to be true :lol: Thanks again

Indeed, I agree with the last response (by Lansbury) that while it maybe possible on paper, the whole process would take longer in time to process a Nigerian police report remotely (ie from London). I imagine it could take anything up to 2 months or more.

I have learnt so far, that I could have it done in person within 1-2 days if I traveled down. While buying a flight ticket and taking two working days off work might be expensive (quite easily £1K), it may/is actualy more efficient in terms of time. A typical case of some cost benefit analysis. A trip to Nigeria it is then!

I just read through the requirements again and also came to the same conclusion.

I guess now I can take some time off work and make the expensive trip home to Nigeria for it. Thanks again
