  1. I'm not saying don't excercise or don't be active. I'm saying build it up slowly. Don't go from sitting in the office, followed by sitting in the car, followed by sitting on the couch, to a spinning class. It's not good for you. Build up slowly is all I'm saying.

  2. no need to give 5 year olds cookies.

I'm with you Alan, the thing about going on a big exercise kick, is that if you stop it, with the possible exception of weight lifting, you are sure to gain back more than you lost. It's been proven many times over. Same goes for cutting out a bunch of food all of a sudden, your body thinks there's a famine going on, and uses less, stores more. Not the desired result. Best to slowly decrease intake, gradually add more moving about. Doesn't feel as satisfying as the 'Will be healthy starting Monday' approach, but works much better in the long run.

Alternatives include falling in love, having your heart broken, joining the army, having your entire country endure rationing or drought or calamity.

  3. "Poitine, the Fighting Princess of Donegal" posted a VIDEO insulting my WIFE in the RUB forum. You are free to view it, click on the little arrow to play it. You may even be able to figure it out all by yourself, or get whoever helped Poitine post it to help you.

Is she, or is she not, a Part-Time Model? Is she not often the most beautiful woman in the room? Couldn't she with her figure be an Air Hostess in the 60's? These are the lyrics of the song I posted. Complimentary lyrics. I'm happy for you Gary, that you have found happiness with Alla, pretty often, the most beautiful woman in the room.

  4. Yes I suppose if you wait around long enough there will be a 'scientific' study to back up any position you'd care to make.

I think that the 'eat less, move more' is a good policy, but I do find that where you live can complicate matters. I find that the very same food I ate in England, here has about a third more calories, more salt, is all around worse for me. So certain kinds of common sense strategies I had living over there, have to be reconsidered over here.

  5. So there is no monopoly on methods and I think that some exercise programs are counter productive because they give the participant the idea they have done their bit today and are entitled to swing the fridge door open.

Swimming can make you ravenous. Go and burn 900 calories swimming and you wont stop troughing until 1500 have gone past your clacker

I don't know if you read the article, Alan, but Time Magazine completely agrees with you, and has a very long article saying exactly that.

  6. Some airlines used to have a note on their websites stating that if you were booking more than a certain number of people, call this number. I haven't seen that anywhere for a while, but it can be worth dropping in to an actual travel agent about it. They have flight wholesalers, who might be able to cut you a deal.

  7. In turn, my brother says "air commas" to describe the infamous air quotes that you do when quoting someone in speech.

Well using the word quote for this: " is an Americanism. The British term is 'inverted commas', so your brother is half right.

  8. You're right of course. But I'm taking the same liberties as others here in telling the newbies what to expect. All of us have very limited experiences to draw on...so who are we to be giving advice? Yet I see posters speaking like experts. Telling people what to expect the first 6 months of marriage like there's some really clear patterns, etc. Lots of pseudo experts. I'm just playing the same silly game.

Yes, yes, the problem with sweeping and demeaning generalisations about entire countries of women is the sample size. If only we could know about more women from the FSU, then we could make charts like they do with animals, with all the various species and characteristics.

  9. An occasional mispronunciation is one thing. Not really knowing what the name of somewhere is, calling it whatever you like that sounds vaguely like the original name, and then making a map reflecting your ignorance, and indifference to your own ignorance, that mispronunciation becoming the official name of the place despite plenty of people who are still around and know the correct name ... well, that was done by a certain country I could mention.

Not that I'm bitter, you understand.

  10. I am having some thoughts about format. For the visa things, can we somehow designate items in the Wiki which are published in instructions/embassy website and absolutely required (Sort of thinking this would be short, and more check-list-y) and also highlight in a different way the "insider tips" types of things. Maybe this is what's already done with what looks like code blocks, but at least for me it has a wrap text issue. Other things might be to highlight steps to be taken now so that later processes with be smoother. For example, getting all vaccines before the medical eases AOS/I693 issues later, but doesn't affect the visa process.

Also, I wish there was a way to make a sort of tip window that might pop up when you hover over something, because just on my first glance through, I already found it a little confusing (too many words) But often not really worthy of it's own wiki page...

Anyway, I wanted to get some buy in from the group, and hopefully come up with something uniform before we get too far.

I say, if something feels unclear, go nuts - edit as you please. I don't know all that much about formatting in wiki's, but there are help pages available and linked in the editor page. Perhaps they can help?

In relation to the Vaccines, remember that the K-1 process is different from those getting IR-1/CR-1. Those visas do require that you complete your vaccine list before the visa is issued.

  11. it was REALLY slow for me today. but i was able to edit.

But to be clear, were you able to use the edit tab at the top of the page? Because that is the bit that doesn't work for me. I can edit by clicking the 'edit' button beside headers, but if there isn't a header, I can't edit at all.

If you are able to use the edit tab, can you tell me what browser/OS you're using?

  12. Has anyone else had trouble editing a page that doesn't have any headers in it? The edit tab at the top does nothing for me.

I've posted about this in the site discussion area, but as a workaround, if you're putting in new pages, try to include at least one header, and then it will be editable.

To make a header, just put your header text in = symbols. So it would look like this:

    ==Header==

    Text.

  13. Poiteen -- you will be going through the CSC just like us. Bruce never was without a valid GC because it took exactly two months from filing to delivery of the card, well within the 90 days before expiry. It's likely that your case will be just as speedy. :)

I'm just sayin', #######'s messed up, is all. It's a dumb system :hehe:

  14. I've been doing a few updates on the VJ wiki, mostly on UK topics, and I've had a particular problem: I can't use the edit tab at the top of the page.

Am I doing something wrong? If there are headings and sub-headings on the page, I can edit them by clicking on the edit to the right of the heading. Once in edit mode, I can click on the edit tab at the top, and I can then edit the full page. The problem arises when there are no headings or subheadings on the page. If there is only normal text on the page, I can't access the edit function at all because the edit tab at the top of the page does nothing for me. For that matter, neither does the history, move or watch tabs.

Is there something wrong with the wiki, or is it something I'm doing? Any help would be appreciated.

  15. I've added in a UK specific shipping page, but all I did was copy the first post of the 'Yes!! It's another shipping thread' and left it at that. If anyone could show that page some love, I'm sure future movers would be most grateful. :)

  16. Things are decidedly better, Julez. Thank you. I am still "homeless" but I am not living out of my car. Yet. lol

Krikit, I'm so sorry the last few months have been so hard.

Robin: But we DO have a joint bank account, we got it to scam demonstrate to the UK government that we are a couple.

I'm scared because I hate that stuff. And I think that the whole timing of it, is totally weird. I don't want to be without a valid green card for any length of time. Also doing taxes here helps me to realise that the paperwork here is messed up from top to bottom, not just for immigration stuff. The US government seriously needs to start using these things called computers.
