  1. Hi - I'm a green card holder and live in the USA but still work in Canada (a surprisingly short daily commute!) I have a SSN and file taxes in both countries though I don't earn money in the USA. My question is - when I am elderly, would I get social security benefits even though I've never worked in the USA or contributed to the US or state tax? (other than city/property taxes).

    Just curious.

    ;)

  2. I have the same question, as I recently got a CR-1 visa as well and the green card is in my maiden name. I assumed that because my Canadian passport has my maiden name, all our forms we submitted had to be in my maiden name. I was hoping that when I do the AOS in a year and a bit I would get them to use my married name.

I have my soc. sec. card with my maiden and married name hyphenated as well as my drivers licence, so maybe that will make the process easier???

I didn't feel like paying the extra approx $600 to apply for a new g.c. for the name change.

  3. I can possibly answer a few questions - I did DCF in Canada this summer.

My application was done in it's entirety in Canada. Nothing was sent anywhere in the USA.

I was the beneficiary (foreigner) and I did not have to be in person at the consulate when my husband did the initial application.

I of course had to attend the consulate 8 months later for the interivew.

I don't think you should enter on a visa waiver because they might view that as a bit deceitful (you came to get married, and eventually to immigrate, but presented to the border officials as though you were just a typical 'tourist') That's just my personal opinion though, not sure if it's accurate.

We got married by a justice of the peace (for under $200) in Canada, then immediately started the DCF paperwork. 8 months later with the visa in hand, had a "real" wedding in the U.S. That worked well for us.

    Good luck with everything.

    Howdy,

I'm looking to marry my American fiance and move to the US sometime next year (I live in Nottingham, UK). I've read the guides but my brain is swimming with information at the moment so I was hoping I could get a few points clarified :) We've already chosen the date we'd like to get married (June 2008), so it's a case of trying to work around this date.

    Anyway, a few questions:

    * The plan is for me to fly to the US in June, get married and then return to the UK. I don't think there will be time to file a K-1 before June, so the choice is between a K-3 and DCF. If we decide on DCF, does it need to be sent to London or the State which she lives in?

    * Would my wife need to file the DCF in person?

    * Would there be any problems with entering the US on a visa-waiver to get married and return?

Plan B is to get married in the UK and then file a K-3/DCF, so that it would (hopefully) be ready by June and then we could have a "proper" wedding in the States. Naturally my wallet would prefer to only pay for one wedding, but I don't really like the idea of getting married and then having to sit in the UK for 9 months twiddling my thumbs!

Any advice would be most welcome :)

    Cheers!

  5. Now that I got my green card after 9 months of endless waiting (a CR1 visa via DCF) dos anyone know how i import my Canadian car?

Do I have to pay taxes or anything?

Any info would be great. The officers at the port of entry all tell me something different (some say it's free, others say it's 2.5% tax, one

said it couldn't come in because it has KM's on the speedometer, but it also has MPH in small writing).

I got the recall letters from Honda Canada and Honda America which says it's good to go (no recalls, meets American standards) but i don't know

what to do now. The USCBP website is vague and contradictory  (what's new, this whole process was vague and contradictory, except of course for Visajourney advice).

    Thanks, S.

  6. Just wondering if anyone knows when I can expect my green card in the mail?

I got my CR1 validated on July 30th, the officer at the POE said it could take 2 months

to get the green card. Is this accurate? Also, I heard that if your mailbox doesn't have your

name on it the mailman won't put it in the mailbox and it'll be returned (i.e. if you have a '

neighborhood with a group mailbox, only house #, not names on it)

Thanks for any opinions out there. : )

  7. I have my CR1 interview in Montreal in a few weeks. I checked off the box on one of the forms way back when stating "Yes - I authorized the US government to check me out to get a Social Security card" (sorry I'm so vague, can't remember the packet # etc, does that make sense?).

Anyone know when I will get the Social security card - with the green card? Or is that a separate process from another government agency?

    S ;)

  8. Robin- I sent packet 3 away in mid January 2007 and got my interview coming up on July 27th. I got the appointment letter just a few days ago! I would suggest you CALL Montreal every week once 5 months has passed to check on your interview date. However, don't expect an interview until about 6 or 7 months after you mailed back packet 3.

Sorry, but it's going to be a while. Hope that helps.

  9. I think you should submit the documents they have asked for, the ones you listed below.

In Canada the consulate schedules the appointment for you, by sending you a letter with a time and date to attend the embassy/consulate. I don't know how it works in Egypt. It took me 6 months after I had submitted all the required documents to receive an appointment date, so you will probably have to wait at least a few months.

    I hope this helps you.

    hello guys

we did the dcf in cairo -egypt and they from a month i think and they said that they denied the it but they send it to athens (homeland security) and we contacted them manytimea afterthat

    2. Photocopy of applicants’ birth certificate (the original to be submitted on the appointment date)

    3. Original police certificate from every country where the applicant has lived for more than 6 months since the age of 16 (not all are obtainable or required; call us at 02797-2201 for further information)

    5. Sponsor’s last year of federal income taxes (form 1040 only) for 2006.

the question is that plz we need to know if they approve the case and we r now n the 2nd step or what if so what we should ?

    thank u very much

  10. Thanks -

Misty 1979 - I am not sure when the case was 'completed' but the application was done here at the Vancouver Consulate in mid December 2006 (where we were told it'd take 3 months to get an interview), I received packet 3 in mid January 2007, I mailed the 'checklist' back in mid January 2007.

I probably don't have the terminology right, sorry. I havn't gotten anything in the mail about the appointment yet so it's a good thing I called directly to check!

  11. I asked other members a few weeks ago when I should expect to have my interview in Montreal, I originally applied at the Vancouver consulate in December 2006. I called again this morning to see if there was any progress and lo and behold I have an interview date for July 27th!! !Yeah!! I actually can't believe after all this waiting it's finally time.

Good thing I called, I probably won't get the letter in the mail for a week or so and I have to book flights and hotels!

Thanks for input from other members telling me to call frequently to get updates.

  12. Thank you Len and Bren. I called Montreal today and they confirmed that they have my application, everything is good and said they would be sending an appointment letter between now and the end of July. So i guess from your and other peoples timelines I'll be getting the interview possibly in September

I will go ahead and get a medical in Vancouver, and take the paperwork I have with my case # on it.

Thanks for the info, it's greatly appreciated.

  13. Hi , I married an American in December 2006 and applied at the Vancouver consulate in mid December, the application for my CR1 visa was sent to Montreal at that time. I sent the checklist away in mid January and called the Montreal consulate two month ago, in April, to check on my case. They looked up my case # and said I would be getting a phone call to come for an interivew in 5 or 6 months (that would be September, October 2007).

My question is: when and where do I get the medical done? Will I be given any instructions in regards to what type of checkup and or immunizations I'll need? I haven't read or heard anything about getting a medical and am a little confused and concerned. I'm from Vancouver if that matters.

Thanks in advance for any guidance anyone may have, S. :)
