  2. Hey

I need to ask someone if they know anyone in Jordan. My husband is stranded in Jordan. He has his jordanian passport and is there for work. He can start a new job tomorrow. The problem was that since it took him 2 months to get the money to return to Jordan, the jordanian government made him pay for a new passport and now he is on the streets with nothing. He has only had falafal and water to eat from a stand and that is it for the day as he is scared to part with his last money:(

Does anyone know anyone he can stay with until he gets his first paycheck? (in a month per his soon to be boss). He has tried asking on the street and no one will help him and he has asked a few imams and they all give him attitude and asking him why he came to Jordan without money. He had money but he had to spend it to get a new passport.

    Please pm me. thanks

  3. I wish that all the children of Palestine can come to my house!!!!!

But seriously, I looked at this several years ago on the internet because I was curious about adopting from Iraq as well. Immigration makes it hard (read the book The Kite Runner, that goes into a little detail-not the movie but the book)...you have to prove that there are no living parents. In a war zone, that may be hard at times. In many Muslim countries, it is preferable that they stay with extended families. Even I asked my husband what do a lot of the kids do in that situation. He did not understand the logic of adoption when I explained it to him I think, but I asked him what do the kids do when they have lost their families. And he said they send them to live with a cousin or distant relative or something. So I guess it is a great thing that people look after each other there. But it would still be neat to adopt some though:)

  4. My husband is still asleep or I would be asking him:)

Does anyone know how much it would be for a Palestinian to obtain a Jordanian passport and/or who I can call to find out?

Also can I obtain a Jordanian passport as easy as that? What about me finding work in Jordan? Are they as picky as the western countries where they would deport me if they knew I was looking for work while on a visitor's visa? (but not working mind you but if someone reported me looking).

Or do I need to wait til a company offers me a job while I'm still in America and then they pay for my visa? The work visa section of the jordanian consulate is vague about that or not at all.

    Thanks

I'm not exactly sure how easy it is for Palestinians to get a Jordanian passport. Does your husband have any family in Jordan? It is getting increasingly more difficult to get a Jordanian passport/visa for security purposes. If you husband is currently living in Gaza or the West Bank and has never lived in Jordan he might have to go through some security process. It is even difficult for Jordanians to go to Israel.

You won't be able to get one yourself though unless your husband is a citizen of Jordan and you have been married for some years (not sure of the amount) In order for you to work there, you would need more than a tourist visa. You would need a Jordanian ID card which you will need some legitamate paperwork to obtain it.

I don't think Jordan deports people, but each day you overstay your visa a fee gets tacked on. When you attempt to leave, you must pay that fine or go to jail. For you to work in any legitamate company, you will have to get a visa through them.

Thanks for the info. Actually it is easy to get passport if you are pali. You just have to fill out paperwork. I just did not know where or what the exact procedure was. My husband has an old expired passport from long time ago when he was much younger, but he could not remember either. But he found someone to ask. He must go to Jordan and fill out the application, then he must go abck to Palestine and wait 2-3 weeks and the passport will be ready to pick up. Then he can go back and stay. My husband's brother in law is going to Jordan for a job when ever the border opens so he's already been through the paperwork procedure, just waiting on his passport now. Problem is that the bridge is closed now with what is going on over there. So now he can't get out:(((

Great...so sounds like me working in Jordan will be just as difficult as me wanting to work in the US is i was a foreigner. But I wonder how easy it would be tough if I don't speak arabic though? I doubt it:(

  5. You are talking about human lives here. Where is the victory in killing so many innocents? The lack of value of human life is just disgusting.

The victory is that you accomplish your objective....i.e. make the enemy stop launching rockets into Israel. Did you just fall off a turnip truck or something??

exactly - and i think its hilarious to say that israel does not value human life - are we suggesting that the opposing "government" ie HAMAS does?!

they are hard at work, ain't they?

    before.jpg

I am just sick over the whole thing. I need to stay away from forums like this where people sit on their cushy desk chairs and babble on saying arent HAMAS lives equal to the life of an israeli. Um, no they are not. Their life isnt worth the baby toenail of an upstanding israelis life. One rocket hit two doors down from my brother in laws new house last night then as he moved into beer sheva today with my MIL and FIL and sat down to dinner to celebrate the fact that he is alive another rocket hit one block away from their place. Not to mention they use their own palestinian people as human shields. Dispicable.

EDITED TO MAKE SENSE.... im a little upset....

I'm sorry about your family. :( I hope they remain safe.

  6. Hicham talked to his family today. It's not good. They have yet to get in touch with my SIL today, so they are very worried. Members of my FILs family were killed yesterday. His nephew was rushing home to check on his family and a bomb was dropped right in the street. It killed him, his brother and his 2 year old son. They are also telling us that 8 mosques have been bombed.

I keep hearing that this is a war against Hamas but it's really a massacre of the Gaza people. I'm more certain than ever that the sole purpose of Israel's "mission" is to kill as many Gazans no matter if they are Hamas or not.

    I don't even have words....

I'm sorry to hear that:( I hope they will be safe there

  8. I have not met one person who did not feel a sense of sad emotion when 9/11 happened. Granted, no one would dare say otherwise on American soil. But even the people overseas that I talked to (Europe and Palestine but also arabs online) were saddened by what happened. Any decent person does not like to see innocents die.

shal I think it's great that you had a Muslim and Hindu at Thanksgiving. That was interesting. It is good to see people speaking and communicating naturally instead of people forcing it. I think more people should be like that and be open minded.

As for Muslims (moderate) not expressing outrage, I wonder as well. What I find in real life is that Muslims defense mechanism towwards situations like that is only to scream "This is not Islam!" It is also popular amongst Muslims I know in real life to blurt out "We are not responsible for what others do." which is more or less an "It's not my problem" attitude. Sad indeed.

While you aer not responsible for what others do, you should feel upset by this if you are a Muslim because if you feel your religion is being hijacked, you are not doing your religion a good service by not standing up for your religion.

  9. Speaking of profiling I get pulled all the time when I travel for extra searches. One time in Paris I thought I was on my way to prison, I got surrounded by 7 undercover cops, speaking French, which I don’t speak, and telling me I had to go with them, I was in line getting ready to board the plane to home. I had early problems, but for some reason they always give me a hard time. Must look like a mule or something. Lol

 I know exactly what you mean!

 Try going to Amsterdam 10 times a year LOL

Everytime I go they ask me, "Do you live here? What makes you come here so often?"

wow and I thought 3x to Palestine was rough, lol 10 times..you've got me, lol

I'm waiting for the Israelis to ask me the same thing though, lol

  10. I believe we are very blessed because I never have to defend my choice of religion to anyone. Nor do we discuss these types of topics at dinner or family functions. Typically our dinners and functions are surrounded with fun times and catching up. We are a mixed family of. Jews, Muslims and Christians and we all agree on two things, we love God and each other. We hold a mean Easter Egg hunt, EID celebration and Hannukah parties.

You bring up a good point. With 3 religions in the family, you get every other day as a holiday whoohoo:)

  11. Maybe I've missed something, but why should the thread be locked? Does every thread where there is a certain amount of disagreement need to be halted and locked down?

The original topic was regarding Islam and terrorism and people linking the two. As far as I know people do not typically link terrorism with any other mainstream religion.

Then it went off on some tangential discussions as well, as often happens on message boards.

I think everyone just needs to chill.

I just hate the arguing and being told that I have an owner BUT it does give me good ideas for tonight! I just have to dig out my igor outfit and lookup my Barry White cd's.

Hm....thats not as scarey as an owner who makes the other wear dog collar and leash:)

  12. My family has been total opposite, they told me to go live in Jordan with sofyan and not to come home until he could come with me, and that is what I did.. We now live with my dad and he has stopped eating pork out of respect for sofyan. At family gathering we use Turkey products for everything bc sofyan doesnt eat pork and my cousins husband doesnt eat beef. My aunts and uncles just flew to Patna India on saturday for the wedding of my cousin. I will say, If my family was that judgemental about my spouse, I think that would change the way I felt about my family.

wow you are so lucky. Everyone is luckier than I when it comes to family I think considering my family has disowned me, although they cannot officially say it out loud because it will upset other family members.

My family knows darn well that they can help me by getting me to canada for example where there is easir immigration laws. (supposedly) But do they bother? Nope. They would rather gloat and talk about how my marriage failed because "I could not do US immigration right but if my sister had married a foreigner, she would have had him here in a month"

Yes that is the way my family is.

I doubt I will see them after all before I leave, if and when I leave.

  13. My family was similar to yours, wahrania, during Thanksgiving but I have to say it was much less muslim bashing than usual now that Usama is here.

What I don't get is that even as of this morning the news (bbc, cnn, fox) had said that they did not yet identify the attackers so why on THANKSGIVING was everyone spewing that they were muslims? I mean sure maybe they were but I just had to note how unbelievable it was that the news was calling them Islamic terorrists while simultaneously stating that they did not know who they were. Kinda strange if you ask me.

because everytime something goes boom, it is always the Muslims everyone blames because they think that only Muslims can go boom.

Look at the Oklahoma City bombing for example. Everyone thought that it was an arab, or at least I did back then. But it was a white man, born and raised American!

But with 9/11 everyone has forgotten that

  14. My husband is working and living in Spain. He was terribly disturbed the other day and told me how everyone in Spain thinks all moroccans are terrorist or theivs... I told him Insha'allah when he is here all they'll think is he is a terroist.

You see in Spain moroccans are theives and terroists, in Southern California all mexicans are illegals, in Oregon everyone is a pot head. So it doesn't just stop at Islam it can be lumped in every group every state, every religion. So when people ask me a question like that I typically remind them of my 11 yrs military experience and what have you done for your country (standing in front of them in hijab)? Then if i pick up on say if they're Itallian I remind them of not to long ago any Itallian in NY was considered mofia. It's not fun being lumped into a catagory you know you are and Allah knows who you are. No need to worry further

My aunt who is a law professor is extremely predjudiced against muslims and I think it more comes from a tour in Saudi Arabia ( she was a lt col in the Army during the gulf war) and has alot of students married to muslims ( americans) and she just is very pragmatic. She thinks that islam is harmful to women and that muslim women are opressed. Thats her opinion ( but shes only been to SAUDI ARABIA) and thats been her only exposure to a muslim country. I think if I had only been to SAUDI or interacted with unhappily married college students, maybe I would be the same. My mom on the other hand has travelled to Morocco, Egypt and Jordan. Shes just mad at my husband , not Islam. My aunt saw first hand women stoned and that mess and I dont think that will ever be removed from her mind..

Ayms girl, She is another pork pusher ( ONE TIME SERVED NOTHING TO EAT THAT DIDNT HAVE HAM IN IT)even the beans...

My Irish relatives still consider Italians the devil so it doesnt matter what group you are in.. there are haters( ALOT HAD TO DO WITH MY FAVORITE UNCLE MARRIED AN ITALIAN AND SHE WAS VERY EMOTIONAL AND HER FAMILY HATED MINE)

They were alot more fun than my family and I always wished I was italian too.. LOL. IRISH CATHOLIC NUNS AND SPINSTERS...thats my gang..

I remember the time i saw a young girl who refused the choice her father had for her in a husband she was told she was not allowed to go to college but this wonderful match was made for her she still refused. She was pulled out of the house and her hijab and most of her clothes were removed to show the family's shame.... I was there. I kept yelling for someone to show me in the Qu'ran where this is ... Where???? The father came to me yelling a sgt had to hold me back I yelled at him show me sir if you know where to find it? He looked at me stunned... I asked again and said here.. I have a Qu'ran if you need it show me! He starred at me and started calming down I looked at him and told him Sir you are the one representing Islam to all of these American soldiers and look what you've just done to your duaghter, your country and your religion. Then i was "escorted away" I don't know what happend to that girl but I know I got torn up by my command up one end and down the other.

My thoughts are don't confuse stupidity by a person to represent the entire populace.

ok bringing back things i rather forget gotta go get some tea now.

wow rajaa that is one cool story:)

  15. Ironic that the mumbai thing happened 24-48 hours before my family informed me that if I moved to a Muslim country, they'd never visit me or my future kids. (as if they visit me anyways on US soil, they never have, nor do they call out of the blue for anything as I am nonexistent to them). But my family is dead set agaisnt me moving there to be with my husband if I must.

Then the Mumbai thing happened. GREEAAATTTT

I am so not going to see my family for a while. I don't want them to stand in the way and talk me outt of staying with my husband due to their prejudice. They've stood in my way before in many things, not ever helping me.

    Not this time.

  16. yeah true. I'll try to remember that!

I want to go to the macines where they suck all the oil out of the olives. but my husband said no so far:( He said women aren't allowed to go there and only the men do that:(

Ruins the documentary I wanted to create while I was over there. The Life of an Olive-From Tree to Skillet:)

you can buy israeli olive oil over here in kosher sections of stores or kosher stores, they import a few brands. its not cheap but its not as expensive as some of the pricey italian ones. anyway its better than having one explode in your bag! olives i could understand bringing here if you have family members that make them homemade

I usually buy the cheap crisco veggie oil to cook here:)) But since I must convert my american ways to being more pali...I bought me some olive oil. Plus for things like ful, I use olive oil for that.

I just think it would be nat to have it come from Palestine, brought and picked by me is all.

oh ok i just thought you wanted that quality of olive oil in which case you could get the israeli here as it comes from the same place, same type of olives etc.

i fry with olive oil i get in jugs from the wholesale store and try to convince myself its healthier. i keep the good israeli or italian stuff for salads where you can taste it.

yeah thats the only time I use olive oil is when you can taste it. Actually isnt olive oil the healthiest one?

  17. yeah true. I'll try to remember that!

  19. I would love to or at least some olive oil. Olive oil I know I can take with me through airport cuz I did it for my sister in law. But the olives I don't know about

I took olives recently. They even searched our bags and saw them but let us take them through.

Olive oil you can take, but remember not to put it in your carry-on!

Oh not the carry on?:( I packed the oil in my suitcase to check in under the plane last time. but that was wheh I was going through Ben Gurion, and they did not throw mu luggage around like it was nothing like they do at allenby bridge. I'll make sure to pack the olive oil between heavy clothing to soften the blow when it gets tossed off the truck.

  20. hehe in my husband's case, the men dominate the women. (in more ways than one). The women are totally submissive to the men. When tehre is not men from the village there, it is different. They can talk to each other like normal people do in the USA. But the minute someone from the village comes in, they aer not allowed to do that. Even if the men aer talking to each other in what I consider to be their family room, the women are not allowed to serve them coffee or tea. The women have to make it and they have to get one of ther boy kids to take it into them since it is ok for the men to see the little boys, but not the girls. Or one of the brothers (the unmarried ones for some reason) come and get the tea or coffee when one of the little boys tells tehm it is ready.

But it is very neat though. My husband's entire family is picking olives as it is olive harvest time in Palestine. Everyone there is excited because I am coming and they want me to pick olives with them:)) I've never picked the olives before. So i will do that and my husband told the women I am their boss. And the women fought him and said no your wife helps us, not bosses us around:) hehe he was joking of course.

  21. You are lucky that your husband gives up his manhood without a fight to sit with the women:) My husband did that once when I was there last time but it is considered shame in his family to do that. If the men from the village come, he has to go if he is at the family house. If he's not there, then fine he does not have to go. But if we aer at his family's house and a man stops in from the village, my husband has to split with all the other men and go to the men's section of the house:( And i'm in a corner by myself cuz no one talks to me in the women and tehy all start talking so fast to each other and thats it. I find it more amusing to watch the kids. :) With kids, there is no langauge barrier:))) And teh kids aer fun:)

My husband does not expect miracles from me in the kitchen. It is more important to him that we spend our time together since we'll beth be working. The more time I spend in the kitchen is less time with him and he does not like that because he likees to be spoiled every second:) (but in he will help me cook though and he's not bad!!)

  22. Yeah when my husband gets back, i will go through the thread recipe by recipe. I just dont have time for that now as I'm never home to cook. Only I happened to be home on Friday and was hungry for fresh arabic bread. So I made it but it did not turn out well but now I am out of flour:) So it'll have to wait til habibi is back.

Yes I leave for Palestine on Friday.

I don't spend too too much time with the women because I'm too occupied with my husband. I just want to be with him since I don't get to see him. If we had a normal marriage without immigration, it'd be different and more relaxed. But now it's not because we are apart. I don't know about the women though. I don't feel comfortable with them. I like the men better:) They can talk more freely and I can talk to them easier. Even though they don't speak english either. But it's more relaxed with them. And my husband is there too

  23. Personally I wouldn't bother making pita bread/Arabic bread when you can go buy freshly made ones daily and it saves a TON of time. Then since you will be working, and not slaving over the stove all day, you can focus on making other dishes for him and not wasting your time on the bread!

yeah true but I just love how fresh and hot it is out of the oven:)

And you are right that I need to learn how to make other things too. Like makloovy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 We love maklooby!! I have stiff competition on that one tough. He wont even eat maklooby in restaurant because he only likes his motehr's maklooby!!:)
