social security administration just cancelled face to face appointment due to coronavirus outbreak so I was wondering that how can I update my information with social security administration regarding change in my immigration status from green card holder to US citizen I think I need to visit office personally and present my naturalization certificate but at present its not possible because social security administration has cancelled all face to face operations with clients is it compulsory to first change our immigration status with social security administration and then apply for US passport or it will be still fine even if I inform social security administration later on regarding change in my immigration status right after getting my US Passport
I haven't updated my immigration status with SSA after becoming a USC and it's been 10 years. I called last month and they told me as long as I don't withdraw benefits I should be fine.

Hi, does anyone have similar experiences? Thank you. 🙂

Hello everyone, I'm a USC living in China. I failed paying estimated quarterly taxes last year, also I couldn't enter my complete foreign address when my I filed my taxes online, only 30 characters allowed in address field. My CPA is going to request a waiver of penelty, but if the IRS denies the waiver and sends me a bill, will it go to my incomplete chinese address? Has anyone ever received IRS notices while living abroad? Thank you folks.

i forgot to mention that even if you don't ask for a new/replacement ss card, they'll send one to you anyway. so make sure that you have a trusted mailing address.
I'll get it done when I move back to the States, thank you again. 😘

you've already got your answer. you're fine. Someone here before on VJ just updated his/her ssa record after more than 10 years.
However, if you do a Google search, SSA states that non USCs who are living overseas won't be able to receive payments outside the US. So it's better if you update your record showing that you're a USC. I think (!) you can update anywhere in the continental US, hawaii and Alaska, but not sure about in us territories like guam.. you can always go to Hawaii, i guess.
Thank you so much, you set my mind at ease.

Hi everyone, I didn't update my immigration status with SSA after the naturalization, and it's been 10 years. I was worried, so I called SSA last month, the agent I spoke with told me as long as I don't collect benifits I should be fine. I'm living in China, and there is no way I can go to SSA office anytime soon. Is this going to be a big future's problem for me? I'm really worried. Thank you everyone.
