@CC250I also live in LA. I submitted the application including the originals. Just make sure you track receipt. I just got a rejection letter today stating that I have to wait until the offices open. I will call again. LA already re-opened gyms but they can't open a federal agency... sigh.
Did you just submit the application and original documents to local SSA? For first time ssn, someone from ssa needs to verify you face to face so if you only just submitted the documents, I think that may be why it was denied. I hope you got your documents back!
Try and see if you can schedule an emergency appointment which I what I did, but you may need a reason like employment letter or else you may have to wait till they decide to open.
I got my passport back but not the ssn yet...the SSA supervisor said it may take 5 to 10 business days but will let know you when I receive it.

did you manage to get sorted? Have you called to see if you can get an emergency appointment? I've done that in Colorado, are they doing that where you are? California right?
Hi! I am working on it - I called again today and they said they can schedule me an emergency appointment and by the sounds of it, I will have to provide the original documents (including employment letter) for them to review at the front window and they will verify me there. Now I was told by the ssa representative that the last step may differ by supervisor as they may ask to take your original documents and make photocopies of it and return to you OR make you drop your orginal documents in a drop box and they will mail it to you. I hope I can get the ssn processed and return home with my original documents.

Hi, I called my local SSA, I'm waiting for a call back for an emergency appointment. I'm not sure where you are in the States, but this is what they said in Denver, Colorado. I think we just can't walk in like you usually can before the pandemic. How long have you been in the US?
I am in LA - been here since end of April.
I called the local SSA last week and they said they weren't doing any face to face appointment but I can mail the SS5 and passport. I asked how long and it could take 2 weeks to a month depending if they have any issues. Were you able to get a F2F appointment?

Hi - I think we are in similar situation as I also transferred my work from Canada to US and was able to start working as soon I entered without the SSN.
You should be able to work but the issue may be getting paid without ssn. I applied for my ssn on the DS260 but have not received it yet so I was told to wait until the SSA reopens or apply via mail which requires sending original documents such as passport and SS5 form. I am a little reluctant on sending the passport right now so I haven't done it.

I am waiting on my ssn as well and I arrived on April 25th I called the local SSA and they said you can mail in or drop in your passport and application to get your ssn; however, I didn't feel comfortable with that route so I may just wait until the offices are open to public.

You are authorize to work as soon as you enter the US with a IR1 Visa; however, most company may not want to hire if she does not have.a SSN.
I have a CR1 Visa and was able to start work right away, but had to submit an I-9 through my employer since I transferred over to the US office. I entered the US on last month and I am still awaiting on my ssn (I requested it on my immigration visa application but I heard its not always reliable),. It almost been a month so I assume I would have to go to the SSA office when they open. The main issue is that they may not be able to pay you until you get your ssn or add you to the US payroll though ...

Thank you for the replies!
I booked a flight for Saturday - hope the POE will be a breeze!

It looks air Canada will be suspending all flights to the US starting on April 27. I am in Canada with a CR1 visa (not activated yet). Should I attempt to catch a flight this weekend if I can get on one? There appears some flight still available...

Hi all!
I just received my interview date for next month (IR-1/CR-1 visa), however, I changed my passport last month to my married name.
My concern is that at the time the application was submitted, the passport was under my old name and I am afraid that it might be an issue when I arrive for my interview at the US embassy in Montreal. I have both passport so I can bring them both but I wanted to check if anyone has experienced something similar to this? Should I email the embassy about the passport update or just attend the interview?
Thank you
