Just do the W8Ben until she has an SSN. Then file the W9 to change the account.
She already has an SSN but they still won’t do anything without the W8Ben. I’m not sure if other banks handle it like that, or if it’s a USAA thing.

Has anybody had issues with filling out a W8 BEN form during AOS? USAA is telling us that my wife needs to fill out a W8 BEN since she does not have a GC yet. I tried explaining to them that she meets the substantial presence test and qualifies as a resident for tax purposes, but they refuse to listen. We are considering going elsewhere to set up a joint account.
Au Pair Married Filing Jointly
in Tax & Finances During US Immigration
Posted
Hello all,
My wife and I got married in the Fall of 2019, and are still waiting on her GC interview. Prior to us getting married, she worked as an Au Pair under a J-1 Visa and received a weekly stipend. I am doing our taxes with TurboTax and am unsure of how to enter her income. She never received a W-2 or 1099 for her weekly stipend. Would she be considered self-employed, or is there another way to report her income? We will be filing a joint tax return, so she will be considered a resident alien for tax purposes.
Thanks!
