  1. Interesting! Sounds too efficient to be used by the California DMV though.

Not efficient at all. I turned up 5 minutes early for my 10 am test to find 7 cars in front of me, most of them with test times later than mine, I assumed that I would be taken before them, wrong, first come first tested was the way it worked

  2. At least I got it now. Does anyone know how I can get my licence in NY state without taking the driving test, I heard something about a course that you can take. Not sure.

The DMV give the following link

    www.manys.org

Most community colleges also offer the course your after (waiver programme), hope this helps a little

    good luck

  3. 1. will crash have to give up his UK driving license?

    Yes he is supposed to

    2. how will that effect his ability to drive in the UK when we go over on holiday and/or plan to retire there eventually?

If you give up your license, you can ask the NYDMV to store it for you in case you return home for good, returning on holiday you can use your US license, has it's advantages

    3. his british license allows him to drive trucks.. that won't carry over to the NY license at all will it? and if he gives up his UK license he will then lose that entitlement 7.5 ton trucks won't it?

No nothing carries over I'm afraid. I'm going to have to return home in October to take a physical to renew my UK bus license, would imagine truck drivers have to do the same

    4. since he will be coming in on a CR1 is he considered an immediate permanent resident or not because he's conditional? so would he have to wait the 2 years?

Sorry don't know, wait 2 years for what?

    5. does he have to tell the NY DMV he has a UK license? or can he just go in as a new driver? after all they will be treating him as such by making him get a learner's permit and start from the very beginning like a teenager?

As I said he is supposed to, as for myself I never told them and they never asked

  4. Does anyone know how it works for when Crash comes here for good? I know he'll probably have to take the road test but what about that 6 hour class? Is that just for new drivers meaning someone who's never had a license before or new New York drivers?

Coming from the Uk Crash will have to

    Pass written test

    Take 5 hour class

    Pass road test

    good luck

  5. I did read somewhere that you should surrender your UK license once you are a resident of the US!!!

I know in NY your supposed to hand over your UK licence to NY DMV when you get your US one

I am going home for a vacation so intend to change the name on my driver's licence - It says an address outside the UK cannot be added so will they just change my name or will they refuse to issue it as I now live in the US. I have a US licence too but when i go home it's nice to be able to drive without an international driver's permit

If your renting a car at the airport I would just use the US licence, don't think you need IDP to do that, another plus is if you happen to get caught by one of the speed cameras your UK licence will not get penalty points added

  6. My I-94 was issued for 3 months only, but their system wouldn't accept anything less than 6 months,

so they had to call their supervisor to override the settings and change it to 1 year.

A foreign passport, SSN card and marriage certificate definitely give you enough points. I also had

a UK driving licence and a couple of credit cards to show them, but the problem is not the number of

points - it's convincing them that your status doesn't really expire with the I-94.

I'm glad you got your licence but you appear to have been fortunate in getting a reasonable DMV office. I was told that a UK passport would not be acceptable form of proof as it was a foreign document and was not validated by the INS for a year. I explained as a K1 it could only be issued for 3 months, they said they knew that but did not make the rules only upheld them. My Date of Birth, which was also required, could also not be proven again because the passport is a foreign document and not acceptable. i tried a different DMV office but run up against the same outcome. I gave up at that time and waited for my green card.

By the way my Licence has temporary status in red ink expires 2011, don't know where they got that date from
