If you're a legal resident of the UK you can file the I-130 directly with the London embassy and save a lot of time, the whole process could take as little as two months.  Are you currently a legal resident of the UK, or do you live in the US currently?  If you're in the US, you file with USCIS in the US and the process will take 12-14 months.  Good luck!

We're currently UK residents. As payxibka mentioned, will the London embassy be closing at some point? If so, would I then have to be a US resident to file?

  2. Hi all,

Forgive me if this is the wrong place to post, but we're looking to get an IR-1, so I thought I'd try here!

My Scottish husband and I were chatting today about our plan to move over to the States in about two years (May 2021). We've started our research and were wondering - what is the length of time that we can go between receiving the visa (IR-1 I believe is what we need?) and him becoming a resident?

We wouldn't want to move before the aforementioned time, and we're worried that there will be a gap since you can't really plan it with how long the process takes!
