  1. Did you really just link me to the guide that's stickied at the top of this section? ROFL!!!

    People always assume the worst!

So, I can't send an affidavit w/ an invitation letter? I know I don't 'send for them' like I did for my wife. But, I figure it might help if there is someone in the states saying they'll be responsible for that person.

  2. Ok, it's been a while since I've been on the forum. My wife got her citizenship a few months ago!

Now, my wife wants her mother to come visit on a tourist visa. We've contemplated if this is the best route and decided it probably is.

    A little background...

Mom-in-law has applied for a tourist visa before, twice, and been denied twice, to visit her brother (a citizen).

Now we are going to give it a shot. A permanent resident option probably won't work for her.

She was denied the first time because she was married briefly when she was 17 to her first husband. She didn't think there was any record of this and said she wasn't married before.

The second time she was denied (this was about 1.5 years ago) she wanted to come over for a quinceañera. She made sure to bring all the appropriate documents and then some. They denied her because they said she didn't have enough money to cover the vacation expenses. This was odd because she's middle class in Peru and has several thousand dollars in savings. She has a stable job with the government that she's had for more than 30 years and will continue to have. She has her husband that was staying back. Also, property and a pension.

Now she will try again. The only difference in situation is that she has a few thousand, maybe 10 thousand, more in the bank from the sale of another property. Maybe we will try for both my mother and father-in-law. Anyway... my question is, should we send an affidavit of support with an invitation letter? Is this possible? What else could we do to increase the chances of them approving the visa?

  3. Kudo's to the officer but why was he alone? I mean, why didn't the other passengers help hiim subdue the guy?
Because hitting someone in front of so many spectators opens you up to allll sorts of tort/civil liability issues let alone the criminal ones. If you were to hit him and kill him (there could be all manner of reasons why he went nutty, including a brain bleed) you would be - frankly - screwed.

The reason only one man (who happened to be a cop) did anything about it was because pretty much everybody is just like britbird. Most people are afraid of hitting someone because of the consequences of doing so. The ones who aren't become cops, soldiers, security guards, bodyguards, hitmen, mafioso, etc...

Look at 9/11, only a few people out of several hundred stood up against the terrorists, and that was after they heard about the other planes.

  4. I've had several different types of tamales and even helped make them while I was in Mexico with Javier. The best kind I have ever eaten were wrapped in banana leaves instead of corn husks. The banana leaves give them much more moisture and flavor. I'm not sure where you can find banana leaves though. We can't buy them around here. I've even checked in the Mexican stores around here and they don't have them. I've made them here but Javier helped me mix the masa. I know he insisted we have some sort of "mexican lard" instead of the kind I had in the cabinet. It takes a lot of time to make them and you have to be careful they don't burn. I let the water steam out of my steamer and the ones on the bottom burnt. They still turned out pretty good. Sorry, I don't think I was much help. Just wanted to throw my little bit of information in there. Good luck with making them!

I concur about the bannana leaves, much better than corn husks. Mexico isn't the only country where these are popular. I helped my wife and my mother in law make tamales here in Peru last week. We used chicken and put a greek olive in each one. Que rico!

  5. Hi. My wife is scheduled for interview in a week...in HCM CITY VIETNAM...Every documents is finished..but is the I864 needed to be shown? Am confused because I send to the NVC already and was approved! I send her another set(not copies, but the same filled out). And all my tax forms. My Income shown is only 8000 this year ( i have a business) but my co-sponsor is 20.000. I that enough? The person who helps prepare the papers over there wants me to have at least 18.000. He said its gonna be a problem. What I don't understand is that if my amount is insufficient, why would the NVC approved? And why is the I864 reviewed at the interview? Am worried sick because I don't understand whats going on.

What do you mean "The person who helps prepare the papers over there"? Are you talking about a lawyer in Vietnam? If so I don't think he's aware you have a co-sponsor. I don't see why you would need an extra 18k on top of 20k from your co-sponsor. The poverty guidelines for 2 are $17,112.50 so maybe thats where he got the 18k from.

  6. No. However, you should have made a complete copy of the entire package before you mailed it out to the NVC. That should be sent to your husband to take to the interview at the Consulate.

    Best of luck.

oops I didn t know about this

I called the embassy before the interview to make sure they had all my papers. It was next to impossible for me to get a copy of my i864 because I was already in peru. I asked if I needed a copy and they said no. Then I asked to make sure they have my i864, she said she had it and I definitely would not need to bring a copy. We went to the interview and we were fine without any copies.

  7. Love the bill! Wait, no big fence! I want a big double layer fence. Maybe some signs saying "Trespassers will be shot" :dead::yes:

    ...that's very American of you.

yea.. America, God Guns and Guts first.. Democracy last.. shoot first ask questions later, great use of the human brain.. NOT!

Yeah, sarcasm is a little hard to convey over the internet. I was serious about the fence though. Maybe you should use your imagination before you insult someone. On a side note, who else knew pedroh was going to be here and get all offended by something someone said here?

  8. Homesick American sounds very ignorant to me with these statements. I live in Salt lake city and I used to live in Denver, as a result of my living situation I naturally became a snowboarder/skier. Now I work at a ski resort that gets over 500 inches of snow annually. I drive to work every day at 6 in the morning even if its a blizzard. You need alot of clearance to get through the snow sometimes. It sucks a$$ having to dig out a car in the snow. Maybe you should do some research first before you just assume everybody else lives on flat snowless plains.

Rubbish. You need to read what I write instead of putting words in my mouth. I've already explained that you don't need an SUV to have a vehicle with 4 wheel drive, but obviously you're just ignoring that.

In response to the Hybrid SUV statement you made, how about you buy me one of those Lexus RX400h's. I'd sure like one of those but on my meager ski resort salary I just can't justify spending so much on a car just to save a few dollars on gas.

 That is NOT the only hybrid on the market, dearie.

Clearly you're looking for an excuse to own an SUV. I think it's kind of sad, personally. If all you were doing was flushing your own money down the toilet, I would not care. SUVs waste a precious and finite resource: oil. Once you use up all the oil, it's gone. 50 years from now I invite you and other SUV owners explain to my own grandchildren why your need for a status symbol has ruined their futures. You won't be able to look them in the eyes. Y'know....assuming you give a damn.

Did you read the part where I said CLEARANCE. I never said anything about 4wheel drive so I guess you're the one putting words in my mouth. Ok buy me one of the other 5 Hybrid SUVs made. I prefer japanese though so get me a Toyota Highlander Hybrid.

  9. SUVs are a nuisance and a menace and they suck gasoline. With gas prices guaranteed to continue rising, it does not make financial sense to drive an SUV. JMHO.

A nuisance and a menace?

LOL I live on a farm smack dab in the middle of the Blue Ridge mountains, everyone here uses one because they simply need the power an SUV offers. You have no idea of the grade of some of the roads here! :help:

As I said to Charles, I wouldn't be putting a lot of mileage on it anyway but I can sure use the power when I have to go places around here.

Few if any people actually NEED an SUV. I can understand the need for 4 wheel drive, but there are cars that come with that feature and many SUVs are so unstable with a high center of gravity that unless you are driving over boulders, you do not need that much space between the ground and the chassis. .

If it were up to me the damned things would be pretty much illegal. If you MUST buy an SUV, do all of us (including yourself) a favor and at least get a hybrid one. They get much better mileage.

  10. I read up to the part that says 5000 dollars and something clicked in my mind. I have a friend from the east coast that told me about how alot of people do this there. He told me its the so-called Russian Mafia who offers 5 grand to the people who do this for them, but if you try to get out of the deal afterward or screw up the process they kill you. I believe him, do you?

  11. "Remember that checks are usually only valid for 3 months from date of issuance. So if you wait for her to get here, it may be late & the check will not cash."

"This is actually an urban legend. Unless the check specifically indicates a "void" date they are technically valid indefinetley."

Federal Tax Return checks are good for 1 year. State Tax Return checks are typically the same or have no expiration date.
