The long journey is finally over! Yeah!!!!

First off, I would like to thank everyone on VJ for all there help over the past 5 years. My husband and I were very fortunate to have your guidance throughout our whole immigration process.
We had to be at the courthouse at 11.30am. We got there at 11am. Going through security was worse than going through the airport. A family of 6 in front of us, who couldn't understand English, kept setting off the alarm and the security guard kept trying to tell them to take off their jewelry. We finally got through security and up to the 8th floor by 11.20am. There was a long line in front of us. At 11.35am the court room door opened and everyone went in. They were runnning out of seats and asked that only the people to be naturalized could be allowed in out of the remaining crowd. Everyone else would be let in shortly. Luckily my husband and I got a seat together.
One by one the USCIS officer called us up in non-alphebetical order to hand in our green card, our Oath cermeony letter and sign our certificate. Then we were handed a white packet and told were to sit. One of the court officers explained how the ceremony would go. We had to practice standing with our right hand raised and say the last part of the Oath of Allegieance. Then they had those sitting in the back row of the jury seats practice the standing up and saying your name and nationality.
At 1pm, the judge came out. She introduced the USCIS officer who went to the podium. She then addressed the judge and said how there was 61 applicants from 26 countries, who are approved of good moral character and are eligible to be naturalized. One person never showed up and she requested that they be moved to a ceremony at a later date. The Judge grants the request. There are 20 people requesting name changes which have the appropriate paperwork. The Judge grants the request. The USCIS officer then would like to introduce us to the Judge and starts saying our names one by one, and we each stand and say our name and country of nationality after our name is called. Then the Judge says application for Naturalisation granted, you are all US CItizens now and starts clapping. Everyone in the courtroom clapped and I let out a small cheer, lol.
All of us being Naturalized had to stand and say the Oath of Allegiance. Then the whole courtroom had to stand and face the flag and say the Pledge of Allegiance.
The Judge introduced 4 guests in the courtroom who had gifts for us in honour of the ceremony. She then gave a speech about how important we are to the country and how we probably know more about United States history than most born Americans, lol! After 10 minutes we went up row by row to get our certificate and shake hands with the Judge and the 4 guests. One of the guests said to me its great to see someone with a big smile. I was thinking who isn't smiling? The 4 guests gave us a small American flag, the voter registration form, a letter from our Senator and a letter from our Representative.
If you wanted a picture with the Judge afterwards, you just had to stay behind. Surprisingly only 5 of us stayed behind to get a picture with the Judge. I triple checked my certificate to make sure everything was correct. We were leaving the courthouse at 1.50pm.
I was extremely surprised to see 4 people there to take the Oath and had interpreters with them. I guess I thought you had to be able to fully speak, read and write English to gain citizenship.
My husband and I had a fabulous day and am very glad that we are finished with the immigration process.

Congratulations!!! I know it was a long day but at least it was worth it in the end.
:) Review of citizenship interview at the Fairfax, Virginia office
1-4-2012
My husband and I had an 8:40am appointment and arrived at the office around 8:30am. There was a line outside waiting to get in and get through security. Once we were inside they told us to take the elevator up to the second floor. We handed the receptionist our interview letter and she told us to have a seat and our name would be called when they were ready. After waiting for about 30 minutes a woman made an announcement that the interviews were running behind. Apparently the metro was down or delayed so people were arriving late for their appointments. She assured as that we would be seen within TWO HOURS. The office opens at 8:30am and our appointment was scheduled for 8:40am so I'm not sure how many people they were trying to squeeze in before us!
After waiting for an hour my husband's name was finally called. I got up to go in with in and the IO immediately asked me if I was the attorney. I said no, I'm his wife. He said he didn't need me and I could wait in the lobby. We weren't sure if I would be allowed back but were hoping I could go. We brought all of our paperwork from the start of our K1 journey and I'm the most familiar with where and how everything is filed in our accordion folder. I handed the folder over to my husband and wished him luck.
About 20 minutes later the interview was over. He passed the test!! My husband said the IO was tough on him. Apparently we had checked several "no's" on the application when we should have marked "yes" and the IO wanted to know why. My husband said he asked him EVERY single question on the N400 to get his response. After that, he asked for pictures of us together (we didn't bring any) and proof that we live together (we didn't bring any). We were never told to bring any of this, only my birth certificate, our marriage license and his green card. My husband was able to root through all of our previous paperwork and found an old mortgage statement we had previously submitted and he accepted that. Then, the IO asked my husband for his license, which he handed over. Then the IO said it expired in September!!! We never received a notice to renew and I guess my husband never checked it. I was on the edge of my seat as my husband was telling me this story but was at ease because I knew he had passed.
Then, after that, the civics test came. He was asked:
1. Who is the president?
2. How many representatives are in the house?
3. Who is the speaker of the house?
4. Name one war fought in the 1900's.
5. He couldn't remember the last question.
He had to read, "Who is the father of our country?" and write, "The father of our country is George Washington."
He was then given a piece of paper that said he was approved and to come back at 1pm for the ceremony. We were SHOCKED that the ceremony was happening on the SAME day!! By this time it was about 10:30am so we left the office and went and ate breakfast. After eating we still had time left over so we went to Tyson's Corner mall to walk around.
We returned to the office and went through security and were seated by 1pm. Then, the IO called my husbands name. About 10 minutes went by and I was getting really nervous. I thought maybe they were doing the swearing in and weren't going to let me in. My husband came back and said the IO made an error on his paperwork and we were pushed to a later ceremony. We were told to come back at 3pm.
We were upset that we were made to wait but even more shocked to find out that there were multiple ceremonies on that day. We just waited at the office until 3pm. Just after 3pm they started calling people up to sign their naturalization form and pick up a packet. The packet included a letter from the president, an American flag, voter registration form and an overview of your rights and responsibilities as a citizen. We were directed upstairs and into the ceremony room.
The ceremony was supposed to begin at 4pm but didn't start until 4:30pm. We were told the printer broke and they were trying to get it fixed so everyone could swear in and not have to come back another day. Once the ceremony started, they played a message from the president, did the oath, played a music video "proud to be an American," we said the pledge of allegiance and they handed out the naturalization certificates. At the end everyone stayed to take pictures.
On our way out, they had a voter registration table set up. My husband filled out his form and was told he would get his voter card in the mail in about 4 weeks. We finally left the office at 5:30pm. We had been there ALL DAY. Next stop......celebration dinner!!! My husband is now a USC!!!!

Congratulations to all those who are now US Citizens! Good luck to those still waiting for interviews / oath dates. I was placed in line for scheduling for oath date on 11/29.

OK, so we just home from Memphis and .... I PASSED!!! Woohoo!!!
I had the nicest USCIS Officer I have ever had! My interview was scheduled for 10.10am and I was called in at 10.45am. I was in and out in 10 minutes.
My six questions were:
Who came to America and was sold as slaves?
Who is the vice President?
What is the highest court in the US?
Why did the colonists fight the British?
Who makes federal laws?
How old do you have to be to vote for president?
I had to read: Who can vote?
I had to write: Citizens can vote.
I couldn't get over the size of my file on her desk. It was like 4 or 5 inches high! She said because I had sent sufficient evidence on my marriage (since i was applying based on the 3 year marriage to a USC) that she didn't need to see anything. Of course I had a binder full of all sorts of evidence just in case!
She told me I should receive my Oath Ceremony letter within the next couple of months. She also said that my interview had gone so fast and easy, she thought she was forgetting something.
Now the waiting game for the oath letter.

:) YAY! And so it has been done... finished... end of the line... whatever you call it.
I was sworn in along with 59 other people from 29 different countries. We were supposed to be there by 11:30am but we made sure to give some allowance and got there around 11:00. The room was full, so I thought, boy, there must be at least 200 of us to get swron in. They didn't start checking us in until 10 mis to 12:00nn, we formed 2 lines and submitted our appointment letter and greencard, then was ushered to a room where our certificates were laid on a table. I picked my certificate, then fell in line again to see a court clerk who asked us if everything was correct, spelling, dates, etc., then signed the certificate, then back to the waiting room. After 15 mins or so, they announced that we (the candidates) can proceed and went up to 7th floor, Courtroom 7D while the families waited downstairs for further notice. We were seated in special order (I don't know how they based it), handed a packet containing some important information i.e. letter from the President, citizen's almanac, passport application form, etc., and then we did a little practice on how we will do the ceremony. Around 1pm, they finally let the families in the courtroom, then started the ceremony. After a few words from the judge, we then proceeded with the process. When they called each candidate, that person stood up and said the name of the original country. Then few words from another person (from voting district I guess), then we did the Oath of Allegiance, then handing out of certificate where we had the chance to have a picture taken with the judge. And that's it! It seemed a long process but I was too nervous to even notice the time. IT IS DONE! WOOOOHOOOO!!! On Monday, we will be updating my status at the SSA and then register to vote, then apply for passport. I have this weekend to love on my certificate before letting it go again
I noticed that the photo on it is the one taken during Biometrics. Thank goodness I looked pretty descent, LOL. Well, goodluck to my fellow VJers who are doing the N-400 process. May you all reach the finish line sooner than later!

So its been over 30 days since I received my interview letter and interview cancellation letter. Since I still haven't heard anything about my interview being rescheduled, i called the 1-800 number. I spoke to one guy who then passed me on to a higher customer service person or something. He made a request to my Benefits center for my new interview schedule and he also put a note in with the dates I'll be out of the country in October. He said i should hear something by October 1st. Hopefully I'll hear something soon.

6,000 applicants, plus 6,000 guests in the morning; another 6,000 applicants and 6,000 guests in the afternoon. About 24,000 people in a too small venue know as the L.A. Convention Center. Too small seats for the victims, no seats at all for the guests, who are jammed in with 5,999 sweaty other "guests" for hours, unable to take a breath of clean air.
Visibility near zero. P.A. system screwed up so that not even the citizens-to-be can understand a single word. I rather be castrated with a piece of glass before going through that again. Instead of the death penalty, convicts on death row should be forced to attend 10 Oath ceremonies in a row. They would never commit a crime again. We don't really need waterboarding if we adapt the Los Angeles cattle drive for immigrants!

So CB82, when was your interview scheduled for? Did I miss that?
It was scheduled for September 19th. Which would have been perfect as I have a trip planned for the first two weeks of October (Been booked for over a year). So fingers crossed the rescheduled one will fall on either side of it.
