  1. We had successful interview today at San Francisco. Our appointment was scheduled at 8.30 am. We left building at 9 am. Officer, lady, was friendly. She asked us some questions from documents that we had submitted before with application (she had all documents that were submitted by us, including I129F application). She did not ask for any additional documents (proving that we live together: bills, bank statements…). She only looked at our photo-album and took one photo from our wedding. She told that my wife would receive her Green Card during 60 days. I expected that she would take my wife’s EAD card. But she did not want to take it. Also I was surprised that she did not remove I-94 from her passport (I remember that it was taken from me, when I applied for Green card many years ago.)

BIG THANKS TO THIS FORUM AND ITS MEMBERS!

  2. We got SSN in California after marriage. We presented our marriage certificate and K1 visa (not expired, less than 76 days). Officer told us that we have a right to get SSN (because of K1 visa) but only with maiden name (because the name should be changed in the system by INS). So we applied and received SSN in about a week. We will apply for SSN with marriage name after receiving employment authorization.

If you stay in USA less than 76 days on K1, you have a right to get SSN. Officer may not know about this. Print any official document from the Internet that supports this and bring it to SS officer. Ask for his manager, if he refuses your application.

    Good luck!

  3. I-131 instructions (rev. 10/26/05) say that photos should show a three-quarter frontal view. I guess this is a mistake. I believe it should be full-frontal photos according to new requirements.

I-131 requires to indicate “date of intended departure” and “expected length of trip”. Does it really mean that we should indicate exact date? Does anybody have such experience?

    Thanks for answers.

  4. Dear All,

The instruction for I-485 submission says:

“Attach a copy of the fiancee petition approval, a copy of your marriage certificate and your Form I-94.

    1. Does it mean that it is Ok to submit a PHOTOCOPY of marriage certificate ( and not certified copy issued in Clerks Recorder Office)?

    2. Does it mean that the original I-94 should be submitted in case of K-1 visa holders (not a copy)?

    Thanks everybody for answers.

  5. Yesterday we visited SSA to get SSN.

We presented filed SS-5 form, Passport with K-1 visa and I-94, and our marriage certificate.

We asked, if we could use married name now. The answer was: “We can not use your marriage name yet, because your old name is still in the system. Go to an immigration office, request the name change (will take 3 days), and after apply for a SS card. We do not want to do double job”.

However I asked again to accept our application with maiden name. We will change name after receiving our EAD. Officer accepted our application.

  6. My fiancée arrived 5 weeks ago and we have just married. We have not applied for SSN yet. Question: If we come to SSA office with her passport, I-94 and marriage certificate, will they issue SS card with married name (not maiden)?

Somebody posted information here that after marriage K-1 is not valid more and it is not possible to get SSN in this case. I think that is wrong information, but I worry about that.

Probably, that couple applied for SSN after k-1 expired (I mean after 90 days)

  7. Hello everybody!

We have just married and we want to change my wife’s maiden name before submitting documents for adjustment of status (AOS) for my wife.

The problem: in California it is not possible to change maiden name during the marriage ceremony (license marriage and certificate does not have a graph for that).

We need to do now 3 things:

    1) change maiden name

    2) apply for SSN

    3) Submit documents for AOS

What is better to do at first?

How and where can we change a maiden name?

    Thanks for your answers
