I initially thought this was a good thing. It weeds out potential criminals and terrorists, people intending to deceive the Consulate during the visa application. But reading further into it it seems many are worried about the potential for abuse of the system and the breach of their right to privacy.
As far as I am aware from what I have read they will only be able to see what is publicly shared and may not be able to access deleted accounts. I'm not entirely sure what they will do with old phone numbers and email addresses - perhaps google them? I think that unless there is a real cause for concern at the time of the application they won't check a majority of applicants social history. The time it would take for them to check every single persons accounts, emails, phone numbers (of which many people have several old ones of each, dating back years) it would cause further delays. Further to that, how many people can remember their phone numbers or email addresses from 10+ years ago? Do you also have to share organisational email addresses, some of which contain sensitive and confidential information? I work for the NHS and feel there could be a conflict there, as well as with many other private companies.

Due to the nature of my work I didn't use my own name on Facebook for a number of years, and my colleagues did the same. In time I ended up deleting social media altogether because of the constant drama.
I have seen it mentioned on other forums that a lack of information could work against you, too, but i'm not sure about the legitimacy of that claim. -
I'm glad to hear this won't affect current DS160's. I've waited long enough just to be able to book an interview so I could do without any further delays!
Also, sorry admin. I started a thread when I couldn't find any recent ones - I must have missed this one!

I think the non-immigrant people might be available by phone. You might give that a try. It's when IR-/CR1 (your profile) people call that they often get wrong info because they are talking to the wrong Visa Unit.
Thank you for your reply. I found the number to call just now, so will speak to them tomorrow.

Forget Belfast. They do not process immigrant visas. Your spouse visa is an immigrant visa.
Forget calling. The Immigrant Visa Unit does not take phone calls and does not book appointments over the phone.
My apologies, it wasn't clear in my post that this is for a B-2 visa. I'm aware my previous circumstances make it more difficult to get one but I am attempting it anyway.

Having checked again today I can't book to go to Belfast anyway, as it says i must attend the consulate section location on the DS-160.

Hi all, I am trying to book an interview with the London Consulate but when I go to schedule it, it says there are no appointments and to try again later. I can book an appointment in Belfast for the end of June, but it would be getting there that's the problem.
Is this normal? Would I be better off calling, or do I just keep checking back every day? I understand they are busy at the moment but on the website it says there is a 9 day wait so I don't understand why there are no appointments available after that.

Thank you very much for your quick response! It’s reassuring to know it won’t affect it.

Hey everyone,
My fiancé (USC) and I are looking into filing a CR-1 visa after marrying in my home country. Our issue is (and the reason we are marrying in the UK) is that I recently overstayed my ESTA by 3 days after missing my flight.
Is this going to affect our application? I searched the forums and found an identical situation but the OP was going through the K-1 process and the replies were positive in that it wouldn’t have an impact on it. Would it be better for us to file a K-1 instead and do it that way?

I think they mean more the checking of phone details and private conversations through both that and email. As far as my opinion on social media is concerned, whatever you share on there is public, whether you are set to "private" or not.
