  1. I live in Michigan also and they needed to see proof of residency, my greencard, at the office I went to. They gave me a temporary license and I had to take the written exam immediately, which was a bit of a surprise, so I had only read through the driving laws once but the test was pretty easy. I then had to arrange for a driving test and then got my permanent license.

  2. Basically Packet 3 contains information on booking your medical, checklist and links to the forms that are online you need to fill in and print.

    Packet 3

Oh cool. I've never seen a packet 3 before and that is what I am waiting for. I also go on holiday on Saturday and am hoping (with not much chance I reckon) that packet 3 will arrive before I leave. I have everything ready...

You could always send the online packet 3 to the Embassy before you go on holiday if the actual one doesn't arrive. That is what I did during the postal strike last year to speed things up for me and I had no problems.

  3. I believe that a K3 takes a little longer than a K1. If the ability to work as soon as he gets here is important then the CR1 route might be better as work authorisation would be included but that route takes the longest.

My husband filed for a K1 for me and I was able to visit during the process on the VWP. I just made sure that i brought evidence of ties to my home country such as a rent agreement and work paysubs etc. I think you are only likely to have a problem with the visiting if the visits are too long but a couple of weeks here and there are unlikely to be a problem.

  4. If she is living with you - I hope - then thats her address. This is very strange - your putting her foreign address on it? Did you file for her SSN yet? Do that and then you can add her to your bank account, utility bills and lease/rental etc. You will need some of these for AOS. Good Luck

No, she's only been here for a couple of days. We are waiting the recommended 2 weeks for her information to hit the system so we can apply for the SSN.

She will be added to my bank account after we get married, and we do not have any lease/rental/bills in our name yet because of our living situation (she's living with me and my family right now till we can get our own place).

We were uncertain about putting down this address because, according to the DMV, we had to 'establish' her address. Well, USPS then told us that's not how it works and she just has to get mail here to 'establish' her address.

The license did have a place that allowed us to put a foreign country, and the clerk said we could use her 'last known address'.

Basically, if anyone did this and they had no problems at AOS, or did this and did have problems at AOS, we would like to know.

My UK address was put on my marriage license and my AOS was approved and card production ordered on 8th May so you shouldn't have any problem.

  5. Hi im also from detroit. send my aos application together with my work authorization last dec 30 and they received it jan 4 i think. I got my biometrics last 3rd week of february and got my working permit march. But im wondering why i never got my interview schedule yet. do i have to worry? Maybe your just lucky hhehehe congrats... :)

It might be worth following up your application with an infopass appointment to find out what is happening. I filed in January and received my interview date pretty quickly and was approved this week.

  6. I am so confused and lost. Mostly, from what I can see, everyone seems to have filed from their homes in the States. Glyn and I filed directly with the London Embassy since we are both residents here. Because of this, our information doesn't get put through NVC, but gets handled by the visa immigrant unit at the Embassy. We just received our NOA2 today saying that the petition has been approved and being sent to the consulate.

Has anyone else been through it this way? I have no idea what our timeline is going to be now...and its driving us both nuts. :P

You might want to check the Direct Consular Filing forum here http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.php?showforum=82 .

  7. We picked up her Visa yesterday.

I will return to U.S. next week. Her and my new Step-son will follow the week after.

    Good Luck to all!

    Congratulations

    Thanks guys.

We didn't get the approval we want. But we didn't get denied either. They want more evidence (like spending $150 to send evidence is not enough).

Oh well, he wasn't coming until August anyways so its not like the separation is being prolonged. We'll just take it in stride.

I hope that this is just a minor hiccup for you and that it all works out soon

  8. I may be repeating a common observation but I haven't seen it before as a new guy who applied for a K-1 visa. It arrived on Feb. 14 in Vermont.

I don't know all the abbreviations and I feel like I'm on the outside looking in. I only have the receipt showing the government got the packet and nothing else seems to be happening. I seen different estimates so that this may not be unusual.

Why are most people here posting their timelines on where they are in the visa process? To be honest it makes me a bit jealous and amazed at how much you folks know or have picked up along the way. Doesn't make it seem longer? It reminds me of staring at a clock in school or work and complaining at how slow the time appears to be moving.

My mindset right now is I've been single my whole life and my financee on the other side of the planet. We keep in contact but I don't entirely feel like I'm engaged. I'm just looking forward to having her here so I'm keeping my mind on other things besides obsessing over government forms and procedures.

When people fill in there timelines then the system makes an estimate of when you might be approved given the time and place of filing. I was approved within that estimate, as were many others. I found it helped to have some idea of when to expect some action on my case.

  9. thanks for the replies - i've started the registration process with XE - said they'd call me on the 17th :) so hopefully will be set up and functioning soon. can someone tell me, what happens next - once i've registered my UK bank account with them and it's all set up, do i simply need to give them the US bank details of the account i want to transfer to, or will i need to go through the same process once again when i'm in america with the US bank account?

    thanks.

I don't know about XE as I haven't used them but with InterchangeFX you phone them up with the amount you want to transfer and they quote you the amount of dollars that it will buy. if you wish to proceed they will email you a form which has your customer ref, a transaction ref and details of their account. You then contact your bank to arrange the transfer to their account making sure that they quote your customer and deal reference. You sign the form agreeing to the exchange and fill in another form with details of the destination account number and name and IBAN (Sort Code) reference. You then return these to your exchange broker and the transfer can proceed as soon as they receive the funds from your bank.

  10. I couldn't open an account with LaSalle until I had a social security number. Since you bank with HSBC can't you leave your existing account open until they get your new US account open and then let them transfer your funds internally. It would be worth checking whether they would charge any extra for that.

I have left my existing UK account open and notified them of my new address. I have been transferring money to my joint US bank account using InterchangeFX. The UK bank will allow transfers of up to £10,000 per week, larger amounts only if you are physically present to sign for the transfer, and InterchangeFX give pretty good exchange rates.

  11. - Try to apply for police certificates - check how long they're valid for, how long they take to be issued, if you need your packet 3 to apply for them

I think most consulates will only accept police certificates up to 6 months old. If that's the case with your consulate (check your regional forum, your consulate's website, or call the consulate directly), hold off until you've been approved for the police certs, or at least try to time them properly.

I would apply for the UK police certificate as soon as you are approved (NOA2). It will take around 40 days to get in the UK. I thought that the police certificate was valid for 1 year in the UK.

  12. He should go to his GP to get the vaccinations- there should be no cost for this.

As far as the vaccinations go, here's the relevant link from the embassy: http://www.usembassy.org.uk/cons_new/visa/...ccinechart.html. Get him to print this out and take with him to his GP.

If you check the age requirements it looks like he needs the following:

    MMR

Tdap (not sure what that is - some tetanus jab or other)

There are two more he needs from that list but they are unavailable in the UK. I'm not sure whether they have to be obtained in the US before AOS (someone else will probably guide you on this) but certainly all the vaccination requirements should be completed by the time he adjusts status.

He would also need a flu jab.
