  1. My wife was approved for her green card, the interview in Detroit was very friendly, didn't even ask to see our pictures or much of the info we brought. Got the stamp for the passport when we told her about upcoming travel as well. We did have to wait nearly 1.5 hours.

One minor glitch - when my wife got her social security card after the wedding, she decided to use her maiden name for her middle name and to abandon her original mdidle name which she didn't really care for. I thought it would make more sense to keep the old middle name, but my mom and other people said it was pretty standard to use hte maiden name as the middle.

Anyway, at the green card interview, the interviewer told us she could only use the name on the birth certificate as the middle name; although she could hyphenate and use both last names (or without a hyphen, just a space - " maidenname [space] married name" as the official last name.)

So we decided to just go with the original middle name and the married last name; we can change it again at citizenship or petition for a name change before then through courts. Unfortunately all her job applications, drivers license, and everything else have her maiden name for her middle name already.

Hopefully this isn't a big inconvenience, but I thought I'd post this as a heads up to anyone else who isn't sure what to do about middle name vs. maiden name when getting the SSN after the wedding.

  2. My wife is planning to travel to Saudi on her Indian passport with a Saudi Visa, which are all in her maiden name; meanwhile her Advanced parole, drivers license (state id actually) are all in the married name. It seems like from other posts that carrying all these things plus a marriage certificate should be adequate, does anyone have experience with this?

Which name should the plane tickets be in? Probably they should match the passport right?

Interestingly, the travel will be *after* the AOS interview but presumably before the green card arrives. I assume that should be no problem, that the advaned parole will be as valid as it was before the interview?

  3. I posted this in a slightly wrong section by mistake...

    http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=102516

Submitted the AOS/AP/EAD application 12/21, just got NOA1's for all 3 dated 12/26.

Looking at the timelines and posted info, I see around 22 days average (in Detroit) from NOA1 to the actual biometrics appointment. So that would likely put our biometrics appt in late january? I haven't seen much info on the amount of time between the NOA1 and being notified of the biometrics appointment.

The reason I ask is we hoped to go on vacation during February, and it would be annoying if we booked a (domestic) flight and then found that our biometrics was scheduled for when we planned to be out of state. But if we will be notified for the appt soon, we can wait and book flights later.

Another question, I went on uscis' website and tried case status online and put in the receipt numbers, but it said the receipt number could not be found. Am I checking too early since the NOA1 is just 12/26? I'd like to figure out whether the application is at the local office in Detroit now, and get some better idea where things stand.

  5. Sorry to start another thread about vaccinations, but the others seemed to be going in different directions and I think my wife's worksheet seems particularly confusing.

She has had all her vaccinations in the past, but never had any documentation.

It seems like the civil surgeon in Madras checked multiple boxes which seem contradictory (although obviously the K1 visa and everything worked out ok.)

    The actual worksheet with the boxes for each vaccination is completely blank;

Underneath there is no checkbox in 'vaccination history incomplete' but there is a check in its subheading 'applicant maybe eligible for blanket waiver because vaccinations not medically appropriate, as indicated above.' "K1" is written next to this, perhaps meaning that since it's a K1 visa, the vaccinations are not needed. Of course, that is not a medical reason.

Then, on the next line, there *is* a checkmark by "vaccine history complte for each vaccine, all requirements met (documented above.) Except there is no docmentation above.

Then on another page, there is no check by 'vaccination history complete'; there is a check below it by 'incomplete vaccine history, no waiver requested'; then there is no check by 'vaccine history incomplete, requesting waiver (indicate type below)", but there *is* a check below by 'blanket waiver' with K1 written below it.

So it seems like in this place it says a waiver is requested because it's K1 (even though 'no waiver requested') is checked.

Then on the worksheet it looks like it's marked as complete based on my wife's word, but without documentation; but also marked as a waiver for medical reasons (or just for the bureaucratic reason of being a K1 visa).

My main question is, will a civil surgeon just transfer info based on the 'vaccination history complete' without detailed documentation? seems unlikely.

Seems like the best thing might be to just draw some titers and things like that? Probably mmr, hib, dtp would be dismissed as age inappropriate; a given varicella history would take care of that; then we should draw a hep B titer - that would just leave pneumococcal and flu shots to get now, which would be appropriate enough. Maybe I should call a civil surgeon first and discuss a strategy like this.

  6. My husband had the same problem since he lived in Saudi too. Don't worry. He didn't have to have it. The information Gupt has provided to you is correct. Saudi does not provide certificates to anyone who is not a native of their country. Which embassy are you going through? If it's the same one that I'm going through (Delhi)I can send you a copy of the email they sent me regarding police certificates. I think it will put your mind at ease.

We are going through the Chennai embassy, but I would still like to see that email if it is no trouble, thanks!

  7. mchakko,

I noticed that we have the same NOA2 date. I also noticed that your approved petition is already forwarded to NVC the day after. Is this for real? I called NVC yerterday and they said that they don't have my case yet.

Yes, but I believe this is just because they forgot to generate my NOA2 until 2 weeks after it was already approved and forwarded. I think it took my phone calls and inquiries to get them to notice and actually generate the NOA2.

It looks like from your timeline that your NOA2 came at the actual time of approval. My NOA2 may have been 5/18, but the actual approval was 5/4 and I presume it was forwarded to NVC at that time.

  8. I apologize.......my girl lives in the capital city so for her it is easier. I was insensitive to your plight. I would have her make sacrifices there to get done what she needs for her future. I am guessing she is a doctor or nurse of some sort. again I apologize I forget not everyone is living in a capital city like my fiancee. You have made sacrifices, if it is family functions remind her she has to make sacrifices also. The situation we are all in is not perfect, we try to make it work to the best of our ability. If her engagements are something she can not break away from then you have to accept that, love her, and wait longer. I think they will take the police reports from the current country unless you listed both countries on a form. If that is the case she can probably obtain them by email or phone. I would look into that.

    It's all good...

The timing of things is interesting, basically we are aiming for her to come here in October, so we have a few months to play with. If things go quickly at the embassy, and she gets an mid July date that won't work, can she request a later date? You'd think a later date would be an odd request, but an easily fulfilled request. Hopefully she gets packet 3 soon and we can figure things out.

  9. There are countries that do not issue police certificates. The US Govn't knows this and will not make you go on a wild, futile, goose chase.

If you check out the gallery section of this site, there's a set of scans of Packet 3 from London. It includes information on the police certificate process for that country, but includes a list of countries that you can't get a cert from.

If you can't get a certificate from there, congrats! That's one less thing to do!

You can surf around here to see if there is more specific info or scans from your country's embassy. But the information should be the same, regardless of Embassy.

Thanks, that helps a lot! That list matches the one on ***removed*** (at least to the extent that Saudi and Nepal are on both of them.)

I wonder if the Indian packet 3 will include that list? We'll find out in a couple weeks I suppose when she receives it.

  10. If you go read the guides there is a general timeline, notice the little guy at the top of everything with the sign that says Please read the GUIDES?????

The timeline that says 1 month between sending the information and issuing the intervew, when most timelines I have seen on the site have a couple months before the interview? The guide has very little information about the process once it leaves the US and gets to the embassy, and the timeline has little specific information, just basically says the "embassy will send information and forms to fill out."

Going to police to request a report only takes a day, may take longer to get the report.

Not if the police reports are from two separate foreign countries and may or may not be considered "unobtainable."

The medical interview will take up another day, and she can go at her leisure. I do not see a problem, and you should not either.

Not when the medical interview is halfway across the country...

Also if she has things more pressing to get to you as quickly as possible, what's up with that?

An examination vital to her employment when she arrives here, that also will take place halfway across the country, that also must be booked months in advance...if the exam doesn't get done, her career gets delayed an entire year; and since my career needs to be planned to accommodate hers location-wise...we've got things to coordinate. We've got more things brewing than just waiting for the visa for her to immediately come to the US.

Seriously, things always seemed friendly on this forum, where did that salty response come from???

  11. Hmm, so we are supposed to get a paper mail from NVC when it has been forwarded to the embassy?

I'm busy worrying about my fiancee's medical interview, police certificates, and the timing of the interview now, does anyone know the general way that works? Should another 2-3 months before the interview be expected? If it were only 2, it would be a problem, since she has some other things booked in mid july.

  12. I saw that it is recommened to get the medical exam at least 7 days before the interview; that will be fairly difficult for my fiancee to make two separate trips from Kerala, or to stay for an entire week in Chennai...

In any case, does anyone know how far in advance the appointment for a medical exam needs to be made? I understand the interview date letter/packet is usually given approximately one month before the actual interview; is that enough time to set up the medical appointment and transportation and everything?

What are people's experiences with the Chennai consulate and medical interviews?

  13. My fiancee has lived in Nepal and Saudi Arabia in the past.

According to the Visa recoprocity page http://www.travel.st...ocity/index.htm

Saudi Arabia will not issue a police certificate to a foreign national who no longer lives in Saudi Arabia. It also says that police certificatesr from Nepal are "generally" available.

I also found this list on

    (website removed by request)

Which gives a list of countries with unobtainable police certificates, countries from which you should not bother trying to acquire them; Nepal and Saudi Arabia are both on the list.

Does anyone have any advice on this? I would like to find something more official than a guide on(website removed by request); where can I find a more 'official' answer?

btw does anyone know why the replies in a thread are collapsed, and I can only read them one at a time now? I hadn't checked the boards for a few days and am suddenly having this problem.

  15. Wait a minute, it says on the guide is should send the NOA2 to my fiancee to take to the interview??

That's a problem if they never send it. But why should they need the NOA2, they already have the paperwork and everything.

I think I have everything I need, my employer and bank statements...I'll fill out the affadavits of support, add some updated evidence of ongoing relationship and new letter of intent to marry, plus all the old stuff from the original application and mail it to her, that should be all she needs, right? I guess I can harrass uscis about the noa2 if necessary...

  16. They said they hadn't forwarded it to the consulate yet...but man, now that it's out of California...I feel relieved.

I was very worried about mistakes I made in correcting the original G-325 form (the original photocopies looked good with correcting paper, but then I re-sent the original copies with things crossed out and correct in case they needed original signatures - and then after I sent it, realized a color copy of the corrected original would have been indistinguishable from a pristine original. So I have had this fear all this time that I screwed things up.)

I'm going to India in October and hope she can come back then; so now we have 5 months for things to get to the consulate and for the interview and everything...I was worried everything would be bogged down in CSC for another month or two.

  17. YEAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

I got through by phone to the NVC and they have already received my case and entered it!!!!

I wonder why the USCIS guy said I was marked for approval but that it hadn't been forwarded to NVC yet? He didn't really sound like he knew what he was talking about.

Well, it seems like the NOA2 machinery at CSC is completely broken - but things are getting forwarded to NVC properly. So I guess, the wise thing to do is to keep calling USCIS and using the RFE trick, and try calling NVC if USCIS says you're approved!!

  18. Did you try calling the NVC? Mine had been approved on the 3rd and no paper copy has yet to be sent out. They are messing up with those. My guy on the phone said if I hadn't gotten the paper copy in the mail in another 2 weeks then call back. I called NVC last night and it had just been recieved and I got my case #.

I tried emailing the NVC, maybe I'll try calling next. Hmm, so you don't have a proper NOA2 either? Your situation sounds exactly like mine.

Maybe I'll try calling, it looks like they are open all evening! That's nice.
