Being pretty irresponsible dude, I've missed the expiration date of my green card (permanent resident). And while in a process of renewing it, I also went to DMV to renew my DL. There, they told me- I need to bring a document confirming my status in the US.
Living in CA, this doesn't sound right (I mean- police here is prohibited using own resources to cooperate with ICE, I know a bunch of illegals who got their licenses, etc). Most likely, I've missed something, though. I can see how it would be needed for real ID, but CA also has "federal non compliant" option. And I would assume, this one does not require a federal identification confirming my status.
I found something on one of other forums saying

Bring two passport style photographs and they'll make a little card for you on Form I-94, then place the I-551 stamp on that
And I'm planning to go that route. But for the time being, in California, do I really need some doc confirming my status, or was it just DMV employee's error?
