This is a really good question...also you posted this in the DCF forum. Are you able to apply directly at the Embassy there in Australia, or will you be filing via the Chicago lockbox (via mail)?
Yes, we will be applying via the consular office in Sydney- I hope that means I’m in the right forum!!! Apologies if by chance I’ve misunderstood the jargon.

Hi all,
I'm a dual American/Australian citizen living in Australia sponsoring my spouse so we can move to the US in the next few years! Exciting times My spouse immigrated from Chile to Australia in the 80s with his parents at 8 years of age. His Chilean birth certificate seems not to exist but he has Australian citizenship. He has his original Chilean passport from when he immigrated as well as an Australian passport and other modes of ID- just not a birth certificate. Is it absolutely necessary to have a copy of his Chilean birth certificate? And are there types of documents that can be presented as an alternative?
thanks heaps in advance,
L

He said he wouldn’t have his own prior to 18 as he would have defaulted under his parents’ statuses as they updated theirs. He did say he has the adult version that has to be applied for to re-register once you turn 18 - this is the document he would have used to prove citizenship and acquire an Australian passport. Is that valid? Or will he need those documents from when he was under 18 as well? Thanks heaps!
