I've recently naturalized and applied for a US passport. I've sent in my naturalization certificate as a proof of citizenship. 2 weeks later I received my passport and a few days later I received someone else's birth certificate (instead of my naturalization certificate).
It looks like my certificate may have been swapped or mailed to someone else. I realize that the replacement takes over a year and costs $555.
I've contacted the state department and they said they'll try to call the person whose birth certificate I have to see if they have my naturalization certificate. I haven't heard anything back yet so I am not having high hopes.
What are my options here? Do I really have to go through all this paperwork and expense again? Should I get a lawyer? Does anyone have an opinion?
