Hi guys,
Haven't been here for a while.
I am concerned about our documents. Looks like most of the people got approved and we did not even have a touch since the day my husband had his biometrics which was on 1/26/10.
I called yesterday and they said " you are still in a normal processing time".
Makes me nervous

There seems to be no accountability with the USCIS. They have a typo, you pay. They lose your documents, you pay. They send important documents first class mail with no conformation and if it gets lost in the mail you pay.
My compliments to you for trying to help the poor AOS applicants. It is possible an online search may find the applicants, but it would be a daunting task in New York.
i tried looking for this person on whitepages.com but no one with this name came up

Hey guys,
Just wanted to write something that is very frustrating and could happen to anyone unfortunately.
Few days ago we received a mail adressed to some name and has OUR EXACT adress from the USCIS. I knew there is some kind of mistake right away since we live in a private house and there is no one under that name. If we lived in the building it would be a different story, thinking someone else's mail from a different apt was in our mailbox, but that's not the case.
So I decided to open the letter and it was a letter adressed to that person stating that they have a GC interview next month. I called the USCIS letting them know that I received someone's mail with OUR adress on it and that maybe they can resend the letter to the person to the CORRECT adress. The customer service told me that they can NOT do it cause I don't have the info like their date of birth so they would have to miss their interview and then they'll get some letter stating that they have missed their interview and that they can be rescheduled. I got pissed and explained to the lady that it's a very important even for someone and it's not fair to which she replied " there is nothing we can do about it but I do understand your concern"
So something like this can happen to any of us and it's just frustrating.

NOTHING, sbsolutely NOTHING can compare with a Matreshka calling card. I have a friend in Moscow, and this card is a blessing. A $5 calling card to a landline could give you close to 1000 minutes. Even if you will buy a $10 card, it'll be the same thing cause apparantely they can not give more than 1000 min on a card. Even after 3-4 hrs of conversation, after i checky my balance, i still have about 1000 minutes left on my card although the card will say that my balance is for examples already $7. The best for Moscow for sure, so I am sure it'll be just as good for St. Peterburg.
Also, my husband uses this card sometimes too to call Ukraine and Israel and never had problem with connections, except of course calling those countries give him much less minutes.
There is also another calling call, it's called in russian " Nu pozvoni" there is a picture of wolf and a rabbit from a very popular and famous russian cartoon, " ny pogodi" that card gives a lot of minutes too. I don't think this calling card has a website though and who knows, maybe that card is sold only in NY, no idea.

I have/had the same problem. We both speak Russian at home and with our friends and family.
The only way he'll start learning is by going to english classes here in USA. My husband went to free schools/jewish centers and etc that offers free classes. Most of the people in the class were from russian/ukraine as well and he actually made some friends that way too. I think reading newspapers, watching news and regular american Tv shows is a big plus but my hubby is not into TV, he rather stay on computer.
Until your husband will go to work, his english will be very minimal. Only communicating outside the house with others will make him learn english faster. I tried talking to my husband in english before and he told me that it i will continue doing that he'll start talking to me in hebrew which i don't understand.
Also, going to school will make him understand better because the teacher knows how to explain their questions. My husband ALWAYS asks a lot of questions " why this, and why do we say like that" and etc. I can NOT explain to him his question since I don't know the answer to it as to ' why this and why like that" i can basically only translate words from russian to english and vice versa. We used to get into a lot of fights because he thought i just didn't want to take my time to explain it to him, but now since he's here for 1.5 years, he's realizing that there are some things that he wouldn't be able to explain too but only to translate it. So going to school and working will be the biggest accomplimshment in learning english.

That's exactly how it's called. It's Russian Channel 1. It's one of the most popular channels in Russia as well. I have it through my cablevision, and it's only $14.95 per month. THE BEST!!!!
All the time they have concerts, movies, shows.......always very entertaining!!!!
They actually have the same program as in Russia. Except whatever they show the show/movie/concert there for example at 3pm in Russia, they will show the same thing in USA but at 3pm by NY time. No other Russian channel can compare to it. My parents have about 5 different channels but they usually watch only Russian Channel 1 since there is always something going on. There is also a Russian channel called "Russia" in Russia but I don't think we have it here yet in America.

I am from NY and i have to say that probably 25% of NY is russians, and the rest is the other mixed culture.
NY has Russian neighborhoods and more than one in each city and county and region. Russian stores are on every block.

By far, one of the most interesting topics here in RU forum....Mox is right, it's been dead in here lately.
Reading the whole thread made me laugh and realize that i am not the only one who's going through everything you ladies said. My husband is originally from Lviv, Ukraine but moved to Israel about 7 years ago before we met. So a lot of his mentality is Ukrainian/Israeli.
He's been here for 1.5 years and I think only now little by little starts adjusting to USA and maybe feeling like this is becoming his country and not Israel.
He felt the same way as Natalie's husband about the job. He didn't want to start from the low ladder, he wanted his first job to be a high paid job and something with a nice title. He couldn't understand why should he work for a low salary and etc when he got his university degree in IT/WebDesigner/computer programmer. I think Sergey ( Natalie's husband) would become best friends with my hubby LOL....they seem to have almost the same personality. Yeah, my hushband is very blunt too. On some level, our relationship is probably a bit easier than others since I am Russian myself, so we don't have any language barrier but that really doesn't mean that we don't have our bumps or it was easier for him to adjust to USA. I would probably say that learning English is probably harder for him than for any of your husbands because you guys talk english at home and we speak Russian. When we go somewhere he will ask me to ask something and will not speak english in front of me even though he knows how to say it but he always underestimates himself. Even when he does ask someone something and they will reply back, right away he will look at me like " oh my god, i don't know what he/she said". More often than not, he just underestimates himself. When he's watching some American comedy shows, he's laughing and then he goes to me " oh my god, i understood everything" So it's like he understands, he speaks it but he doesn't believe in himself. Even when it comes to work/job, he's just looking to work with Russians or with Israelis, he's afraid to work for Americans just in case he won't be able to communicate with them. I tried to explain more than once, that he's in America and sooner or later he will NEED to work with Americans and communicate with them, as of now it's just pointless to talk about it. So just like everyone else, I am just asking for patiece.....LOTS OF PATIENCE
And english is harder for him because he speaks 4 languages fluently and English is his 5th, so every language he knows is being mixed in with English.

Natasha tells me it is considered improper to give a watch as a gift, particularly to someone you care about, as this indicates a separation is impending. Of course, you don't whistle inside a home or this invites financial ruin. I've also been told that fashion (particularly for women) trumps all, so no how uncomfortable those tall spiky heeled shoes are you walk as though on clouds and then soak your feet in the privacy of your home. Not really a superstition, I suppose, but there you have it.
Ah yeah, we talked about the watch/clock superstition. Her reason was that a watch symbolizes that you are running out of time. Maybe it sucks the life out of you or something. I like Natasha's explanation better, not near as creepy. Also forbidden as a gift are knives, but I can't remember what misfortune is connected to that. Losing fingers I suppose.
When I asked her why she completely dismisses the wallet superstition, but not the ladder, she said that some superstitions are real and that she has first hand information that the ladder one is real. I suspect it's more to do with the rubles she'd have to cough up to satisfy her brother. My guess is that the more expensive the superstition is, the less like it is to be "real."
You can give knives for a persent, but the receiver should pay for it. It can be even a penny, nickel, dime....as long as it seems like they paid for it.
I am a firm believer in breaking a mirror/glass and bad luck for 7 years and a black cat crossing infront of you. Russian's have too many superstitions they believe in

Are you guys talking about cell phone or landline? I could be on the phone with my friend in Moscow for hours and thankfully never had any problems unless ofcourse the calling card had no more money on it. I do have to say that calling to Moscow with a $5 calling card gives me about 1,000 minutes. And then........after few hours, i still have about 1,000 minutes left cause I guess the maximum amount they give on cards is 1,000 min but even after the card went down to $2-3 still have the same amount of minutes. Go figure!

As a New Yorker, I am telling you from experience. FRIDAYS always packed on highways by JFK. The flight should arrive around 3 right? My friend came to visit 2 weeks ago from Moscow and I did park my car but it took me a while to find a space by Terminal 3. She got out within half an hour of her arrival, but.....she came on Monday so that might play a role too since the airport wasn't busy.

I was in Walmart and needed a mayo. Mircale whip was on sale and that's what I bought. Gosh, when we tried it at home we almost threw up. It was very sweet and just simply disgusting. Hellmans mayo all the way!!!!
Also, russian mayo is the bomb!!!

Don't know if these are good ideas but it is what the wife wants to do......
MIL is getting a set of really good kitchen knives or a set of teflon coated pots and pans..
FIL is getting a battery operated drill or a AM/FM/CD player for his car...
Not sure if it's only Russian tradition BUT when giving out knives as a gift, the person receiving it must pay for it. It's been going around for years and years. I don't mean to pay the full price, but the receiver should pay a penny, dime, nickel, quarter...anything, as long as it looks like "they" bought it and paid something for it. I would assume it's only Russian traiditon. Otherwise, it's known as a bad luck.

Well, I know some things I just don't want them to be true and push them away.
He often wants things done his way (well I sometimes do too =p) and if I cry sometimes he tells me that I just want to make him feel guilty instead of realizing that I am sad...
He is not that open to compromise as I am. Either his way or no way.
So I will try not to contact him no more until he contacts me and even then I try to wait a day or two until I reply...
If he will tell me that he still wants me at the end...oh well...then I will think about the whole situation again and will try not to go back to him like it is so easy to get me back. And if I decide to go the States what I prolly would do, I do not know if we should marry right away. Maybe I should just get a hotel room (oh well, he would have to pay it LOL). I don't have that much money, but if he wanted me there I think he would pay it...
So I will wait and see what happens...
And it is not that I did not think about what you guys wrote on here. I just do think that he does not have another woman but him acting so weird...who would know? Just him...
Well, I took your advice and also wrote him that if he still loved me a little bit right now that he should let me celebrate christmas with him (I would stay in a hotel and he could stay in the barracks, so we could be together but still apart). Guess what his answer mail was? His reply to that was the following:

I told you what the plan was so no I don't want you to come here in dec
ok it going to be real busy and I need my time alone ok
and in another mail he wrote me that: I told you I want time on my own right now didn't I
It upset me to hear such hard words...
Well I will just leave him for now and see what the future will bring...

Reading those few words that your fiance wrote to you made me angry, I can only imagine how it made you feel. I don't mean to be rough with you but I think it's time for you to forget the whole thing. If he's confused about his feelings and you offered to come over and spend holidays together, well maybe it would be a good thing to spend some time together and for him to acknowledge his feelings...either he has them for you or he doesn't. The way he replied back to you does sound like he has someone else. Like god forbid you will come over and bother him. There is nothing to think about. He's not the right man for you and I am sure you didn't deserved it. Just open your eyes and face the reality. It's better now while you are still "home" than if you would move half a world away and found it out even the harder way once you guys lived together. I know it's easier to say things than to do it, but please take off your pink glasses and see the "real" thing that he's doing to you. Someone who is confused about his feelings would probably do want to spend some time together to test his/her feelings and to see how it feels to be together again. He's straight to the point and even gave you a "specific date" when he'll let you know. How in the world does a normal person know which date would be the date he's sure of his feelings? Most likely he's waiting for some kind of answer from someone else and by Jan 2 he'll know for sure what to do with you.
Sorry honey, just take care of yourself. Go out with friends and try to realx a bit.

He waited till you got your visa to tell you that he's not sure of his feelings. He made you go through the whole process of the waiting game and the whole interview. I don't know what to say, but maybe you better off without him. Maybe it's better that he told you now before you left everything behind you to a different side of the world.
That being said, maybe things happen for a reason. Maybe you will find someone better or maybe he'll realize what he lost and come to his senses.

My friend arrived safely yesterday, thankgod!
She said half of the passenger went with Aeroflot yesterday instead of Delta.
I don't know, i was told by delta representative that no compensations are due to any of the passengers....only if they want to change a flight to a different day ( and i've been told i could only do it the day the incident happened, if i'll call later they will charge the fees and the whole 9 yards )
