Bei vielen Arbeitgebern muss man ein paar Monate employed sein bevor man eligible wird fuer benefits wie KV. deductible heisst- copay. Trotz Versicherung bist Du verpflichtet einen Teil der Behandlung und auch Medikamente zu bezahlen. Die Hoehe haengt von der Art der KV ab. Wenn Du keine Versicherung hast, musst Du den kompletten Preis selber zahlen. Viele Aerzte lassen mit sich verhandeln oder bieten Dir payment plans an, manche sogar ohne /niedrige Zinsen, dann kannste es bequem abzahlen mit ner kleineren monatlichen Summe. Das deductible ist normalwerweise immer in einer Summe due, d.h. die schicken dir die Rechnung und wollen das Du das auch zahlst.

Ein flexible spending account ist empfehlenswert wenn Du eine Krankenversicherung mit high deductibles/co-pays hast. Da zahlst Du jeden Monat Geld aus deinem Paycheck ein und sparst es auf einem Konto fuer den Fall das Du zum Doc musst und damit kannst Du dann co-pays, pharmacy products etc bezahlen.

Was fuer Medikamente brauchst Du denn? Wenn Du eine legit-condition hast, und Du hast hier nen primary physician oder nurse practitioner (ich finde Nurse Practitioner sind cheaper) dann kannste oftmals auch ein Rezept per Telefon bekommen, die rufen dann die Pharmacy and und ordern das uebers Telefon/Internet und du brauchst nicht wieder zum Arzt fuer ein physical.

congrats Caro- go for the VBAC! Evi has done it safely. And my "crunchy hospital" does VBAC's almost every week. Just go in open minded, you may end up with a section if things get tough, or if there is any doubt for complications. Do NOT attempt a VBAC at home whatever you do. There was one in our community recently who chose to have a homebirth wih midwife after c-section with twins. When the midwife didn't get a fetal heart rate during labor, she called 911, mom refused to let the paramedics take her to the hospital. Shortly after the ambulance left her house she lost consciousness, and by the time they came back, and emergency sectioned her in the ER Mom and baby were both dead bc she ruptured. The c-section in the ER was so traumatizing for some staff that they had to get counseling.

VBAC does have risks so it's best to go for it in a setting where you will have access to emergency treatment for you AND your baby in seconds if you need it. You can still bring a birth plan, the (flameless)candles, music, bouncy ball, doula and kumbaya-singing husband to the hospital.

Funny I was never sure if I wanted kids, now I have 2 and I am not sure if we are done yet. haha. We will see. If there is a 3rd we will proably wait another 2 years I think. If Ben was our second child I'd have a tubal already haha! Kai is so freaking easy going, he makes parenting look like a piece of cake. Even his birth was nice and pretty painless. The only rough patch was his acid reflux during the first 4 weeks, but he is definitely a changed man now.

oooh sorry. Wir haben beim Volksfest Goldfische gewonnen und die sind leider eine WOche spaeter "verstorben" Ben's Version wie die in den Himmel gekommen sind ist hilarious... Er haette so gerne einen Hund (er hat sich sogar schon Namen ausgedacht) aber Chuck ist dagegen. Seit den Goldfischen traut er mir nicht mehr was Haustiere betrifft.. boo! Naja wenn er sich nicht ueberzeugen laesst stelle ich ihn vor die Wahl: 3. Baby oder puppy.

Update from my friend...you know, the one that just was cleared for all issues of threat of pre-term labor?

She delivered her daughter last night! She had just hit 31 wp.

The baby is in the NICU and is doing fine, she's 3lbs. If you a a person of faith and don't mind, please keep my friend and her family in your prayers.

oh goodness. I had so many mommies lately that walked in with a "little" back pain and they are 27 weeks, we put them on the monitor and whoom they are 10cm and in full blown labor. The NICU has never been so busy. I don't know what it is? 3lbs is a good size for a 31 weeker, hoping she'll be fine!!!

homw birth: I'm totally against it. but i may be a tad biased I work in L&D. while its not the norm, I do see many complications on a daily basis not just regarding baby but also mom. Would NEVER recommend it if it's you first baby and always have a "plan B" i.e. emergency transportation to a hospital, proper suction/oxygen and an experienced midwife. Do not attempt a homebirth to save money.

Lisa: go for it! what happened to your friend can happen to anyone regardless of maternal age. just stay positive, eat healthy, exercise etc and have faith, it will all work out. Of course with any pregnancy anything can happen but then you will just have to take it one day at a time like your friend. Her little one made it to 31 weeks. I have a nicu full of 32 weekers and they are all doing great. We just discharged 29w twins and they are doing wonderful too. Neonatal medicine is so much more advanced today than even just 8 years ago.

It's definitely twice as challenging with 2 kids but its so worth it!

@ Steffi: Natural Grocer's has frozen organic meat. My King Soopers (Krogers chain) has some too. And once a month I go to Colorado, Wholefoods has all organic or natural (their natural means no hormones, no antibiotics and decent food for the animals). It's expensive, so we mostly stick with ground beef cause the organic ground beef per pound at our store is $4.75, that's ok for me. I wish it was more widely available, especially pork and chicken too so we have a variety. I would like to do fish more often, but only un-farmed, wild caught is ok, and that is so expensive, it is crazy. A pound of wild salmon is $15.99 at the store here. YIKES!!!!

Sorry about the pumping issues. I wish the laws were enforced more. And Kelly, I hope it goes back up for you. I do take the fennugreek daily without side effects, I always think I don't feel full so I get worried, but luckily Eloise's output (she pukes about 2-3 ounces after each nursing session) and diapers show she eats enough. Hang in there!

We were so busy recently. We put a swing set, cleaned up the garage, Jona got a twin bed and new room decor, I sewed 9 cutsie diapers that I wanted so badly and Eloise moved from the cosleeper into the crib which is right next to our bed. She sleeps much better there. I think the cosleeper's mattress is crappy.

maybe I should call the cops next time I work? lol oh man it blows even on nights when I have more time. its hard to interrupt my shift, go in a freezing cold room, take scrubs off, pump on the high setting bc I'm stressed and dont have much time. And then I could just cry bc every time I pump I should be holding my little boy and nursing him. oh well, it's all worth it.

Wow the prices for salmon are crazy. Idk I'd have a hard time finding that kind of salmon at our stores. Even the farm salmon costs around $11/lb.

kel: sorry your supply is going down. Pumping is really tough, I have a very hard time keeping up. During my 15hrs at work I sometimes only get maybe once or if I'm lucky twice 5 minutes. I talked to my supervisor but there is nothing they can do bc I'm all by myself most of the time. I have also had coworkers roll there eyes right in my face when I asked them to come in and cover for me to go pump or even to the bathroom! One night I was so frustrated I took the damn pump into the nicu and pumped there behind the code cart. F-them. Then I had a few nights when we had some really sick babies, it was so much stress keeping them alive, so when I finally did get to pump I dumped it bc I didn't want to feed him "liquid adrenaline". My supply was so low last week that I had to do formula for 2 days, then I had a few days off and nursed him every 20 minutes like day and night and all of a sudden the milkman came back! I'm exhausted though, it's a struggle. My mother bf and bottle fed me and I am ok, but I know what you're saying. Just when you compare bm and formula its gross. Formula smells like catfood, it looks different and his bowels function completely different when he was on formula. I try to avoid it. But I hate just looking at the stupid pump. lol.

about the baby food. I guess the European union is stricter when it comes to baby food. Most of it is already organic, you'd really have to look hard to find non-organic babyfood there. Eveyrthing is in glass jars- no BPA plastics. So I initially assumed the standards here would be the same or even better, but once Ben started to eat there were only like 3 different flavors of earths best. ANd out of these 3 he only liked the chicken dinner. So I had to make my own. When Ben was an infant I started to read labels on everything. Did you ever hear about the book skinny b!tch? That was a huge eye opener about food quality in the US.

Anna: where do you find organic meat in your state? I can' even find it in NY? stop&shop has some organic chicken for $9/lb but no place else sells certified organic meat. SO I buy mine at the farmers market where they "swear" it's hormone and animal by product free.

hey und noch schnell ne Frage- wird mir der alte Pass weg-genommen von der Botschaft wenn ich nen neuen beantrage oder darf ich den behalten? Was wenn ich kurzfristig mal das Land verlassen muesste, und ich keinen Pass habe. Und wie lange darf ich damit ueberhaupt ausreisen? Der ist nur noch bis September gueltig.

Kelly: Kai is showing some interest in eating too I think! He is only 3 months old... He watches us eat and he stuffs his hands in his mouth I have a feeling he is not going to object to food. Ben did the same thing but it wasn't too hard to hold him off til the 6 month mark. The pedi told us 4 months was ok but I waited. I think he started with a few spoonfuls at 5 months. Ben has no food allergies so I really want to wait again and do only organic.

I mostly did earths best jars and when I made my own food I did simple stuff, like blended cooked carrots, peas, beans pears, apples, squash or fresh bananas and avocados. I mixed fruit and veggies with the happy bellies organic oatmeal for some nutrients like protein and iron. I never cooked him meat, I stuck to the jars for chicken or beef bc organic meat is too expensive to buy and make your own. idk with the kids I'm paranoid about organic because they are still growing and I don't want them to eat or drink anything with artificial stuff, dyes, hormones or HFCS. I am more relaxed with Ben now but when they are babies why feed them #######.

I also pay attention to never heat up plastic/BPA. I used to freeze babyfood I made in the blender in ice cube trays or silicone muffin trays and then just put in in bags and label them. Then I would heat them individually in a pot or in a bowl. Or just thaw out the fruit and blend it in with some oatmeal.

ABout the mother- yeah it's sad sometimes. She does love them but there is not much interaction. Ben is getting frustrated with her. At least we have my MIL. Although we soemtimes clash about parenting (like she likes to feed them #######) she is awesome with the kids. It's always like Santa is here when she comes over, she immediately takes over and the kids absolutely love her. When I went to school Ben spent a lot of time with her and it was really good for him. They have a very special bond and he learned a lot from "Gigi" . So at least he has one set of grandparents. It must be hard bec your hubby's parents cant be around.

@Flagyl: definitely wait til your 2nd trimester. I don't think it's safe at all in the first trimester. Plus with Flagyl a lot of moms get intense side effects like nausea/vomiting which can be worse in the first trimester. Most mom's I see at the hospital that were treated with Flagyl- only in the second and third trimesters. But you have to weigh the pro's and con's if the benefit outweighs the risk then I would trust the doctor (i.e. your infection may significantly harm the fetus).

So far nothing new here. Kai is 3 months old now- time flies!!! Ben had his 3 year check at the pedi this week. They tested his vision (he had to cover his eyes and then "read" some letters/shapes and I was shocked how cooperative the little stinker was! He got it all right. ANd then he even peed in the cup for the nurse like a pro, like he does it every day. LOL He is getting so big! He also had his first dentist appointment which went well! They flossed his teeth and brushed them and bombarded him with toys, it was a huge success. He loves the dentist. Now we just have to get past the second surgery on his neck in June.

My mom is visiting from Germany... not such a big help. I think I'm complaining about her here every year, haha. Every year the hubby and I make plans to go out when she comes but it never works out. SHe wants nothing to do with the kids. This year she said she wants to help us so we get some sleep but again, she could care less if Kai is screaming in his swing because I am in the bathroom wiping Ben's butt. *rolleyes* I have to pay the babysitter to come and watch the kids so I can take a nap after my nightshifts because she won't do it. It's really frustrating since we only see her twice/year but she absolutely does not interact with them. *vent end*.

@SteffiA: Das ist ja echt krass was du da so durchmachst, haette nie gedachts dass es so schlimm ist. Da zahlt man ein heiden Geld fuer so ne Entbindung und dann solche Zustaende. Wie sollen denn dann die kleinen Dinger wachsen? Bin sooooooooooo froh, dass bei uns alles in Ordnung ging und Noah gesund und munter ist und war zur Geburt. Hoffe das beim naechsten baby wieder alles so gut und easy wird. Da kann man ja echt Angst bekommen. Was macht ihr denn dann wenn euch die Eltern von der Scheibe aus beobachten und das Baby schreit und schreit weil es Hunger hat etc. und ihr koennt nicths machen was ihr noch ein anderes beamtmen muesst etc. Echt krass, ich bin sprachlos.

Anna: nee ist ne Level 3 NICU. Und nee kann nixreporten. Jedesmal wenn wir den Supervisor anrufen werden wir vertroestet. Und es gibt nen Lottoticket und nen Eintrag auf die WOW Wand das ist echt ein Witz.

Wir haben immernoch Geraete von Westchester Med und Presbyterian und immernoch 9 Babies und es fehlt trotzdem an allen Ecken und Enden. ZB haben wir nur 2 Monitor Kabel fuer Blutdruck Messungen. Wir muessen jedesmal schrauben wenn wir nen Blutdruck brauchen. An dem Tag wo ich an meinem day off fuer 6h arbeiten kommen sollte wurden 15h daraus weil nur eine Kollegin da war mit 9 Babies, 2 vented, 2 CPAP, und ein sehr unstabiles Pneumothorax. Mein supervisor hat mich angefleht dazubleiben und mir double pay angeboten. Konnte ja auch meine Kollegin nicht alleine lassen. Normalerweise sind 2 beatmete Babies fuer eine RN das Maximum. Und gestern rief mich dann meine andere Chefin an und meinte double pay geht ja mal gar nich und ich haette nach Hause gehen sollen. whatever.

In letzter Zeit hatten wir auch so oft ne Muddi die mit "Rueckenschmerzen" in der 27. Woche zum Check kam und sie war 10cm dilated und hat dann ihr Baby entbunden bevor ein Knderarzt da war. Und wir duerfen ja eigentlich keine Babies<32. SSW annehmen aber was sollste machen, wenn keine Zeit mehr ist die Mutter zu verlegen. Es ist soo frustierend wenn dann kein Equipment da ist um ein 800gr Baby zu intubieren weil es nicht im Budget ist. Und unsee Geraete sind nicht mal annaehernd derselbe Standard wie die Maschinen die ich vor 9 Jahren in Berlin hatte. Ja also wirklch wie ein Etwicklungsland aber wehe man meckert, die Ami's denken ja immer die sind die tollsten was Medizin angeht, also das es auch anders und besser geht das schnallen die nicht.

Nina gut das Du danach fragst, ich muss Ende Juni meinen Pass beantragen (der laeuft im September aus), ist also hoechste Eisenbahn! ALso kann man Namensaenderung und Pass gleichzeitig beantragen? Und wie ist das mit Passfotos im deutschen Format? Und was brauch ich sonst noch alles? Ich hab ueberhaupt keinen Bock auf den Trip nach NYC. Aber muss ja sein.

Noch ne Frage: Muddi ist gerade zu Besuch und hat Zahnschmerzen.... *rolleyes* hatte einer von Euch schon mal aehnliche Probleme mit Familienbesuch und Arztbesuch? Sie meint sie haette mal vor 5 Jahren ne Auslandsversicherung abgeschlossen aber hat keine Papiere oder so mitgebracht. Ist ja schon nervig genug hier mit ami versicherung nen Termin zu ergattern, geschweige denn das es bezahlbar ist, aber sie geht langsam die Waende hoch vor Zahnschmerzen.

SOnst hier nix neues. Diese WOche war meine letzte WOche im Kreissaal/Fulltime aber weil die Neo so ueberfuellt ist (wir habn 6 Plaetze und 10 Babies war ich diese Woche schon dort und anstatt part time arbeite ich im Moment immernoch full time plus Ueberstunden! Wir sind einfach so unterbesetzt und es ist totales Chaos. Sowas kenn ich aus DE ueberhaupt nicht. Meine letzte Nacht hab ich 16h gestanden, 2 extreme Fruehchen per kaiserschnitt und "meiner" kam ohne Herzschlag und Atmung raus, APgars 0-1-4. jeez. Und wir hatten weder eine Beatmungsgeraet noch genug syringe Pumpen also hab ich das Baby erst intubiert und dann fast 2h lang mit der Hand beatmet bis uns ein anderes KH ein Beatmungsgeraet geborgt hat. Unglaublich. Meine anderen Patienten haben dann 4h zu spaet ihre Sondennahrung bekommen und 3 Babies mussten sich eine Pumpe teilen weil wir nicht genug equipment haben!! Ich hab langsam Angst um meine Lizenz. Heute haette ich eigentlich frei aber muss nochmal 6h arbeiten weil sonst nur 2 Kollegen mit den 10 Babies alleine die ganze Nacht wuerde einfach nicht gehen.

Nina: ooh man, also Chuckie und ich hatten von ANfang an gesagt das wir an unserer Ehe arbeiten wenn mal haertere Zeiten anstehen. Wir hatten auch schon so Phasen wo ich am liebsten meine Sachen packen wollte aber bisher haben wir es immer ausgebuegelt mit riesen Zoff und dann ner Aussprache. Ich glaube das ist normal das man sich ab und an in den Haaren hat. Zum Glueck brauchten wir noch keine paartherapie obwohl wir uns auch ab und an den Kopf abreissen wuerden, hehe. Aber wir haben beide von Anfang an gesagt das wir dazu bereit sind wenn es gar nicht mehr geht. Ich glaube nach ein paar Jahren schleicht sich wirklich der ALltag rein und bei uns ist es seit Monaten purer survival Kampf mit den 2 babies und Vollzeit Schichten. Wir versuchen ab und an date night zu machen und immer per sms in Konakt zu bleiben weil wir uns sehr oft einfach nu die Klinke in die Hand geben und uns manchmal tagelang nicht sehen. Die 2 Kinder sind auch ne ganze schoene Motivation das wir an unserer Ehe arbeiten.

Also rede mal ganz ruhig mit Matt und sag ihm wie Du Dich fuehlst, genau wie Du es hier geschrieben hast. Ich weiss nicht ich waere lieber zu counseling bereit als das ich mit ansehe wie mein Partner unzufrieden ist oder sogar die Ehe zu riskieren. Ich hoffe ihr kriegt das wieder hin!

Nina: hugs. Wenn Chuck PC spiele spielen wuerde wuerde ich verrueckt werden haha. Er hat dazu keine Zeit, also was soll ich sagen? Schafft Euch ein paar Kinder an und er wird dann Windeln wechseln und mit der Spielzeugeisenbahn spielen aber mehr Zeit fuer Dich hat er auch nicht. Mein hubby hat nur Augen fuer Thomas the Train. Aber ich muss schon sagen das er schon wenigstens motiviert ist was die Zukunft angeht und super schwerst arbeitet.

Was ist denn mit Euren Plaenen geworden wieder nach DE zu ziehen? congrats on 4.0! yeah! Ich glaub das ist ne deutsche Macke, immer rummeckern aber trotzdem sind wir top of the class. haha.

Anja: ja Du machst das schon richtig mit dem fuettern. Ditto - wir haben earths best organic Glas gefuettert, und Happy Bellies organic oatmeal 3x/Tag, da ist genug Protein/Eisen und sogar DHA drin und es ist organic also nicht voller Scheiss wie manches Gerber Zeugs.

Ich hab cereal mit Obst oder Gemuese gemischt und das hat er auch gut gegessen. ALlerdings ist die Auswahl hier nur beschraenkt was Babynahrung angeht, und ich hab ab und an selber gekocht.

Was das schlafen angeht- Ben hat in demselben Alter damit angefangen staendig aufzuwachen nachts und nur aus comfort Gruenden ge-nursed. Es ging soweit das er alle 30 Minute nwach war ueber Monate hinweg!! Er hat auch erst angefangen besser zu schlafen mit ca 2 Jahren. Alptraum. Ich bin ja sehr gegen das schreien lassen aber ich finde auch definitiv das man ein Kind auf keinen Fall Schlaf mit Stillen assoziieren lassen sollte. Versuch ein Kuscheltier/Nuckel etc lass ihn nicht beim stillen einschlafen. Ben konnte niemals mit Daddy oder sonstwem einschlafen nur stillen. Ich bin fast wahnsinnig geworden.

Vielleicht kann Dein Mann ihn ein paar Tage nachts uebernehmen, auch wenn er vielleicht ein bisschen schreit, wenigstens ist Daddy mit ihm dabei, aber ich glaube es ist fuer alle Beteiligten besser wenn er lernt sich selber zu beruhigen oder zumindest nicht immer nur ausschlisslich durch das stillen. In dem ALter kann er durchaus schon 8h pro Nacht schlafen aber jedes Baby ist auch sehr einzigartig und geht eben nicht immer nach Schema F.

Ich koennte auch immer verrueckt werden wenn ich das cry it out hier hoere! Mein Pediatrician zeigt jeder Ami-Mutti beim 1 month check up ein Video wo gesagt wird das Baby mit 4 Wochen durchaus nachts schreien darf wenn er nicht schlaeft. Mit 4 Wochen?? Und genau dasselbe wurde uns auch beim 2 month check up gezeigt. Ich finde das schrecklich.

Aber ich finde auch auf jeden Fall das ein Baby fruehzeitig an eine Routine gewoehnt werden sollte und das er nicht auf nursing angewiesen sein sollte um einzuschlafen. Aus dem Fehler hab ich gelernt. Ich lege Kai ins Bett wenn er sleepy und wach ist u8nd er schlaeft dann von alleine ein. Sehr selten beim nursen. Bis jetzt klappts gut und er schlaeft so 5-6h stretches mit 2 Monaten. Und ohne weinen.

So sehr ich ja manchmal Chuck den Kopf abbeissen moechte, ich weiss nich was ich jemals ohne ihn machen wuerde. Kann nur hoffen das uns mal nicht sowas passiert schon alleine wegen den Kids. Ich seh das gerade bei Freunden von uns wie krass das ist mit Sorgerechts streitigkeiten. Und ich hab eine Kollegin die hat ihre Kinder seit 2 Jahren nicht gesehen weil ihr das Sorgerecht aberkannt wurde wegen einer totalen Banalitaet. Ich finde die Gesetze hier ein bisschen angsteinfloessend in der Hinsicht.

Steffi: kann den depri verstehen. Ich glaub ich hab das auch manchmal. Chuck scherzt immer das ich postpartum depression habe 3x pro Woche wenn ich zur Arbeit muss. Ich komm zu gar nix und hab sooo viele Schuldgefuehle Kai so lange zurueckzulassen. Nur noch 2 Wochen bis ich nur noch 2 Schichten/Woche habe. bleib positiv und konzentriere Dich auf die guten Seiten! Wie zB Krankenverischerung, Mutterschutz, Doener und keine Erdbeben mehr!!

Steffi : hugs!!! Es ist wohl ueberall nicht leicht aber ihr packt das schon! Potsdam Potsdam Potsdam! yeah!! Mein happy place, keep looking in Potsdam, das ist besser als Berlin. Ich druecke Euch die Daumen das alles gut geht mit Jobs und Studium, es dauert sicherlich erstmal ein paar Monate bis ihr Euch richtig eingelebt habt! Mit Jobs ist es ja nicht so doll in DE aber Ihr werdet bestimmt was finden! Wie gefaellt es Miguel denn in DE? ich hoffe das wir dieses Jahr noch nach DE schaffen dann muessen wir uns treffen!!!

Haha ich musste echt lachen als ich gelesen habe wie leicht es doch ist in DE ein Visa zu bekommen! Wie lange ist das denn gueltig? Und wie laeuft das mit Krankenversicherung etc fuer Miguel?

Stefanie: ihr heiratet in Deutschland? Toll! Viel SPass! Ich hab auch ueberlegt in DE nochmal ne Zeremonie zu machen fuer die Verwandten (wie Omi etc) die damals nicht dabei sein konnten aber ich glaub das wird nix. Wir sind beide zu fett fuer unsere damaligen Hochzeitsoutifts, haha.
