We literally submitted a copy of our lease with both names, joint medical/dental insurance through my company, and that we had a joint savings account (separate checking) and that was it really... Think you are way over stressing yourself honestly.

Try to get joint cell phone, joint car insurance, anything joint is substantial not just photos and cards.

We even just did a court house ceremony and never even supplied photos or anything.

Just don't fall back on being q-u-e-e-r as making anything complicated because in the sense of immigration it makes no difference.

    Thank you for your reply!

    I'm a little concerned because:

    * We don't have a lease (I own my home)
    * He is unemployed so all the bills are in my name

    * We don't have joint health insurance (I'm self employed and you can't get a couple on the same account for personally bought insurance anymore I think due to changes with the ACA)

    * We don't have joint car insurance -- my partner can't get a license here in Oregon until he has a green card

We DO have a joint bank account for eating out and home expenses and stuff and my phone plan has two numbers on it (both his and mine). Unsure if I can get his name on the account without a credit line under his social but I will try to do so in the next week.

What do you mean about not falling back on being q-u-e-e-r as making anything complicated?

    Thanks!

  2. Hi all! Our K-1 visa was approved in December, and my spouse arrived here end of December. We promptly got married and filed for adjustment of status the beginning of February. We just received notice that our interview is scheduled 3 weeks from now -- we were expecting it sometime in August based on the timeline.

I'm stressing out because I don't have a lot of evidence of shared financials because my spouse has only been here for three months, isn't working yet, and I'm currently financially supporting both of us. All the bills are in my name because I'm the one working and the one with a credit line. This stuff takes time to build! Will the interviewer be reasonable about this?

I do have: Christmas cards addressed to both of us, a wedding invite addressed to both of us from a mutual friend, photos from our wedding (our families didn't come because we're q-u-e-e-r and it's complicated), gifts from my family for our wedding including copies of some checks, photos from our life together. We just got a puppy so there's the adoption papers and stuff for that.

What else can I bring to show them we're for real? I'm super nervous about this.

    Thank you everyone!

Did SS tell you they were issuing a card? We applied in person for a SS# after we got married and before we filed the status adjustment and was told they wouldn't issue a card without a status adjustment.

Yes! We applied after marriage because in Oregon you don't need a SS # to get a marriage license, and we figured it would be easier to apply after b/c it would have the new name on the marriage license. They said everything was okay and to expect the SS card in 2-4 weeks.

I will send off the packet this week and make a note that we are still waiting for the SS card and include a copy of the receipt the SS office gave us. Thank you all for the replies!

  4. Hello,

My partner is here on the K-1 visa, and we married a little over a month ago. We applied for a Social Security card 16 days ago, but have not yet received it. I'm almost done with all the paperwork for the adjustment of status, and the i-485 and i-765 are asking for the social security number if available. I'm wondering if we should wait until the SS card arrives in the mail before sending this off or should I send it in now and leave it blank (and maybe add a note that we are still waiting for the number)? Can I send the number in to them when we get it in a few weeks? Like can I update them somehow?

    Thanks!

  5. Hello!
I currently purchase my own private health insurance because I am self employed. My partner just came over from Australia on the K-1 visa, and we just got married. He has about a month left to purchase health insurance before the 60 day special life event clause expires.

My question is: If he purchases the insurance on the marketplace, will he endanger his "can't take any government subsidy" rule of the K-1 visa? I am in the process of adjusting his status now (should be sending off the documents next week), and in the affidavit of support it says he can't take any sort of government support. Does the marketplace realize this and only offer him full price plans? I don't want him to endanger his immigration status, but I'm unsure how to navigate this otherwise.

    Thank you for your time!

  6. Hello,

My partner wants to take my last name when we get married, but ALSO change his first name and drop his middle name completely. He's from Australia and I live in Oregon. He's still in Australia, we have our NOA2 and our interview should be sometime end of next month.

    1) Should he change his first name now and get and updated passport in Australia? Would he encounter issues with his name not matching the application, or would the name change document be enough at the interview? Should he also just take my last name now as well, to not duplicate a step (and not have to get an additional passport change!)

    2) If not, can he change his name after he's here? Can non-residents change their first names? Would he have to do that in Australia via post or via embassy and then get an updated passport on the Australian side and use that to change his info with the USCIS while here?

Will this screw up the process completely and put us in a weird legal limbo? We don't want to screw up this process at all.

    Thank you!

  7. Hello!

Apologies if this is already covered, but I'm seeing a lot of different advice with this, so I'm fairly confused what information is needed along with this form.

A little info: I'm the sponsor, and my fiancee will be interviewing in Sydney. I'm self-employed -- I'm the sole employee of my LLC. I make enough each year to sponsor, but I don't have just a simple W-2 and I'm not going to write a letter saying I'm employed by myself. 🙄

    My questions are:

    1) Since I'm self-employed, should I also include my entire large tax returns for both my business and personal (seems overkill), or maybe just the w-2 along with the Schedule C and the form that shows my rental income property? Some folks say it's enough to just download the transcript of the taxes via the IRS website, which I've done. Is this transcript really actually enough?

    2) How do I show evidence that I own my home? Should I print out last month's mortgage statement along with maybe a copy of my house title? And to show current value, I printed out the Zillow estimate directly from the website, is that valid?

    3) My checking account is sparse, I don't keep a lot of cash -- should I still get a letter from my bank saying I've had the account for x years and what my average amount is, even if that's always been fairly low? Would it make more sense to show the total deposits YTD? Should I just leave this out?

    4) Is a printed monthly statement from my investment Ameritrade account enough or do I need to get them to send me some official-on-letterhead statement thing?

    5) Is there anything else I should do differently because I'm self-employed that I may be leaving out?

Thanks for your help in advance!
