  1. do you want to be a polygamist?

i'm petitioning for wife #3 right now and yes it would be better for us if all of them could be recognized as legal wives.

    Hi VP! Nice try!

 I'm sorry you're little friend left and you find yourself missing her but I'm not her. If you want to tune up those detective skills of yours maybe you'll look at the day this thread was created and that might explain why I created this ID on that day. Do you really think I'd want to mess with my soon to be wife's immigration by putting my business out here under my real ID?

    K? take care now

  2. Why does this thread keep going to polygamy and pedophilia? We are talking about the rights of 2 consenting adults to make their relationship legal.

WRT why polygamy keeps coming up, I will pose this question for discussion:

Given that a marriage is currently defined as a legal union of one woman and one man, if we are going to open up this legal definition to include same-sex couples, than what would be the legal argument to maintain the restriction of only 2 consenting adults? This question is from a purely legal standpoint, not social or political.

IMO pedophilia doesn't belong in this discussion. Pedophiles can be heterosexual, homosexual, male, or female.

Polygamy is hardly widespread - nor would it likely become so if homosexuals were given the right to marry. As I see it, the 'equality' of marriage relegates polygamists into the ranks of the sexually dominant and the emotionally unstable.

Hmmm, but equality uder the law doesn't require something to be widespread, does it? If that was the case, we could argue that a group of people could be legally discriminated against if they were simply a minority of the population.

This has nothing to do with pedophilia! A pedophile has sex with children and children are not able to consent. This is totally different. I don't see how you can compare polygamy to pedophilia unless the polygamist was marrying underage girls. In most cases all parties are consenting adults and the government shouldn't have a say in it. There has also been a lot of talk about polygamists being a drain on the economy and this isn't the case at all. When the government refuses to recognize those marriages then it is left open to abuse. Men start sending their wives to collect welfare and foodstamps and they are able to because they're not legally married. this also leaves the door open to abuse towards the women because those women are less likely to seek help in the event of domestic violence. They also end up on welfare if something happens to the husband because they're not elligible for his benifits.

The polygamist struggle is closely tied in to the gay marriage thing because if one gets legalized/recognized the other's most likely going to follow suit. Most polygamists don't really care if the government recognized their marriages or not but it would be helpful if it was at least decriminalized. At least gay people don't have to worry about going to prison for who they love.

Honestly, if the bill in AZ didn't read like the bills throughout the rest of the country and limit the number of spouses to two it would have most likely passed. AZ is a pretty conservative state.

  3. I suspect that if the laws prohibiting polygamy were tested again (not likely),

Why is it not likely? There are many advocacy groups pushing for this cause today. It is likely that it will be challenged and found to be unconstitutional in the near future. AZ voted down this marriage ban, I suspect because there are a large number of polygamists here.

  4. Superheros don't need to hide behind masks. ;) I see how you had no problem diving into religious topics, too afraid to speak your mind under your own ID?

Separation of church and state is religious? I'd call that political but I guess that's why this place is so damn scary now is because some people can't tell the difference.

now you gona post that pic or what?

  5. Wow I must say, I have read quite a few of your posts and your posting style sure is familiar. So who were you in your previous life?

this is my alter-ego baby doll! i cant reveal my true identity and remain in good super hero standing ;) would superman still kick a s s if everyone knew he was that goofy clark kent? would spider man still be f-in awesome if everyone knew he was just that fukc up peter parker?

:o were you jealous i didnt ask for a pic from you too? poor thing i'm so sorry! go ahead and post and we'll give that a little look-see too ;) i just couldn't resist asking when the topic of lesbian love was broached above

  6. The fact of the matter is it doesn't matter if it's right or wrong and it doesn't matter if you approve or not, what matters is that the government has no place regulating marriage... civil unions sure... marriages NO  that is something left up to each individual church/temple/mosque/priestess/tree/what the hell ever.

try to follow me now--- it is u-n-c-o-n-s-t-i-t-u-t-i-o-n-a-l for ANY church and state to intermingle. that's really very simple, we could probably teach this stuff to monkeys ;)

  7. I'm pretty sure marriage has already been redefined throughout history.

Also, some other cultures have a different view of it entirely.

So because it's happening in your era, there's a problem with it?

NinjaEdit! MBP beat me do it!

You and MBP are both correct... as has been discussed here already, it used to be that interracial couples could not marry because it was immoral as well.... when it was finally approved to allow them to do so they had to request a special "marriage license" from the govt for permission to marry.

It's also been redefined recently to not include polygamous marriages which have been accepted in every culture prior to christianity (catholic/protestant types-- there are actually many christians who believe polygamy is allowed). even the jewish culture accepted polygamy before being forced to comply with new christian laws. in this country minority groups have been forced into submission to "the church" by making them change the laws of their own religions to exclude polyagamy in order to be accepted here. polygamy has always been accepted until marriage was recently "redefined" to exclude it  it's not the governments job to define or govern marriage becaue each marriage is defined by the parties involved and we're supposed to have freedom of religion here... these laws "banning" certain types of marriage is nothing more than modern day witch hunts and we have a constitutional right to not be persecuted by any church.

  8. i see you ignored the rest of my post...In the United States, we have freedom of religion and speech. it is NOT illegal to teach hatred.

So christians have the right to teach their children to hate but loving gays can not marry each other because the christians say so? or a man can't love two women because it's not kosher with the church? interesting

LisaD used to have that as her Ava... nuthin new here. /shrugs/

That's what makes it funny
