  1. Here we go again with the same question that has been asked a zillion times with no proper answer. Can a person use a hotel address, a business address, or purchase a street address and include it in their DS-260 form? Can they opt out from answering the question or say no and still move forward with the application? Please ONLY answer if you have been through the same scenario (no address or hotel address) or you have credible information from an authority that states clearly what should be done. Let's keep this straight forward for future generations. Nobody has to go through ten pages of people expressing their opinion.

    Thank you all

  2. Hello everyone,

I created a FB page to teach English to Moroccans. I am a Cambridge University certified English language instructor. I use Moroccan Arabic in my videos. Any is welcome, but because of the Moroccan dialect not everyone will benefit. Join us here: https://www.facebook.com/EnglishForMoroccansNow/

I also Have created two Youtube channels for the same purpose:

    For beginners: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC09vrqgHWcwMxLVs06OIuaw

For intermediate learners and general English commentary: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCC-P7dpCwZUbs0zCNOsCc8g

    Best regards,

    Anouar

  3. Maryland – So, you are coming to live in the United States of America. Welcome to the New World. It is going to be a transformative experience in many ways. Opportunities and challenges are waiting for you, but the four points addressed below are one way or another key to making your transition from Morocco to USA less stressful! However, if you are coming as a student, some of these tips may be irrelevant!

    1- Money talks!

Secure some money before you leave Morocco. How much are we talking about here? In major American cities, you will probably need between $2,000 and $3,000 to survive for one month without any support. A one bedroom (in a shared apartment) costs between $400 and $700 in most U.S. cities. If you are lucky, you might find something cheaper, but it might come at a “high cost”– a shared basement in a crowded building, unsafe area, unclean apartment or irresponsible roommates, or all of the above.

    2- Learn some English!

Your high school English isn’t enough. Take English classes in Morocco. Don’t delude yourself that you will do it in USA. Start studying English at least one year before you move to the U.S. You will not have enough time to study when you get here. You will be very busy and ESL classes here cost an arm and a leg. Remember: your English fluency will most likely determine the type of job that you will get.

The positive part is, however, most Americans tolerate poor English. You will rarely, if ever, be corrected by an American. Americans are different from many European countries. Most Americans are used to hearing all types of accents and deal, on daily basis, with all levels of fluency. So, relax, speak your mind and make mistakes…tons of mistakes…Americans will not grade you! Ironically, you might have a hard time with your fellow Moroccans instead. Some Moroccans love to grade and correct.

3- Do you have a Roof?

In most cases, immigrants secure a room or apartment through their friends or relatives who are already well-settled in USA. That’s good enough! But if you don’t know what to do about accommodation, go online. Craigslist.com is by far the best tool to find a place in your new city. It is free and packed with helpful ads. We rented all of our apartments in the past through CL.

    4-Work?

Again, your friends and relatives might have recommendations for you. But if you aren’t lucky enough to find a job through a friend or a relative, you should do research in Morocco and start contacting job providers (craigslist.com might be helpful!). After you land in the USA, you could also enroll with an employment agency for a fee. I remember I got my first job at a New York city restaurant through an agency. You submit an application and pay around $100 and the agency connects you with potential employers based on your application/ resume. In fact, most employment agencies accept applications from people from all professional backgrounds!

As a new immigrant, it is important to have the support of your friends and family, but complete dependence on others for information and material help can be annoying, or even damaging to relationships. Developing your research and opportunity seeking skills will tremendously enhance your immigration experience!

    Good luck!

  4. Dear members,

I would like to thank everyone who supported me here throughout my immigration process. It has been such a long complicated process for me, but finally all that drama is a thing of the past.

I became a citizen in the summer of 2013 and obtained my US passport, updated my social security status and registered to vote in local elections. It is such a great feeling not to have to worry about saying that you are a US citizen while filling info into different forms and applications.

I am traveling to Egypt through Europe in couple of weeks and I will try to get out of the airport and explore the world a bit-- no worries about the visa to Europe any more!

I would love to wish everyone good luck! I just feel that I am less and less attached to visajourney.com...but I just wanted to express my gratitude to everyone who supported me here.

    Good luck!

  5. Hello mandixon -

My husband is about to go through the same situation (he's been a PR for 3+ years now, and we took one trip outside the US for ~9 months). Can you please tell me what kind of documentation you presented? We do not have a lease/mortgage and we did not have income during that time and I'm wondering if there is other documentation that they accepted?

    Thanks!

If I remember well, this is what I submitted in relation to supporting my claim that i didnt break my ties with the states:

*letters from both my wife and i explaining the reasons for my absence

*documentation from my wife's university stating why, for how long, and when she was away for her research abroad

*lease of our time in the states (no leases when we were abroad)

*bank account statements (shared account) that reflect all our transactions for the past three years. the statements clearly show that we had little money when we lived abroad.

*my communication (copy of all emails) with the US consulate in my country and IRS. the communication with the consulate shows my attempt to travel back to the states within a year, and the IRS communication shows why we failed to file our income tax for two years (had little income when we lived abroad).

that's it, i think. i hope im not forgetting anything. just wanna mention though that I filed my N-400 more than a year after my last trip out of the states (i re-established my ties with the USA during that year).

    good luck!

  6. I was wondering if anyone else has already been through this and can give me advice on getting my new york state drivers license.

In order to get my license I need 6 points worth of documents proving my name, age or address. I have my permanent resident card and social security card which equal 5 points and I'm having a real hard time getting one last usable document on the department of motor vehicules list since, almost all of the documents listed either dont apply to me like utility bills or they paradoxically require a drivers license to obtain!!!!

If anyone has any tips please fill me in! Thank you very much.

If I remember well, I also submitted my passport which has a photo visa issued by the US consulate in my country.

  7. Most people use the airlines of their countries because they offer direct flights. in many cases, the spouses might need transit visas to go through other countries if they fly with foreign airlines. Someone with a Moroccan passport can transit through most European airports without a visa--So you could try a one stop or two stop flight!

I get my tickets from here: www.kayak.com

I find Royal Air Maroc to be more expensive than its competitors.

In fact, there is nothing special about flying a spouse. a flight is a flight...what matters is the service and the safety record which one should look into. In one occasion, I wasn't treated so well by the staff of Royal Air Maroc. I usually fly with Lufthansa now.

    Good luck!

Thank you all. I ended up sending Ahmed the money via Western Union and he purchased the ticket himself through Qatar Airways to avoid any of that credit card verification mess. We ended up paying around 4500 dirhams/ $500 for the ticket smile.png

Just realized that you purchased the ticket! Sorry for the late response...I just read your original posting.

  8. I applied for a passport 12 days ago (routine processing). I have checked the status of my app several times during the past few days and twice today, but nothing comes up --just the statement in red saying that it is likley that my app hasnt made it into the system yet. Is this common? I dont know when I should go ahead and call them for an update. Anyone went through something similar? I am traveling by the end of Janurary of 2014...so no rush at this point!

    Thank you all!

  9. Well it has been 4 years since i posted on this site which by the way is a blessing, to make this long dramatic story short i got here to the USA in April 2009,lived happily with my ex, had a son, and worked my butt off so we can have a stable life which we did, paid off her debts, her car and managed to enjoy the luxury of affording what we wanted and needed, any way due to many ups and downs after our child birth and the some what evil intervention of some of her old friends and few family members things got a bit sour, but never in my mind was i ready for what followed, all the financials were linked to her, all bills, bank accounts and the rest, to my absolute surprise she filled for divorce in March 2012, the divorce is still in court, we have been living separately since October 2012, i was planning to file for citizenship on April 2012 but her filing for divorce threw me off and i had to focus on getting my finances back together since i didn't have a car nor a personal bank account. now im in this situation where my lawyer says it would of helped a bit in this custody battle if i was a citizen specially that international travel is on the table plus i feel it is time for me to get the citizenship taking care of. i can wait until April 2014 and file 5 years if not what are my options now? any info will be much appreciated, thanks

just wait to save yourself from some unforeseen complications!

  10. Hi all,

This is a question on behalf a friend of mine. He has been married to a US citizen for over three years but way less than 5 years. Both of them are from the same county. He has been an LPR for over 3 years. They have kids and there are no red flags in his file. Unfortunately, divorce is gonna happen because of a bunch of reasons...

Can he still apply according to the 3 year rule if divorce takes place or should he wait until 5 years pass?

    Thanks!

  11. My journey is OVER! I took my oath yesterday. I am so grateful for having been a member of this great forum. Thank you everyone for your advice!

The ceremony was a great event with 33 applicants representing more than 20 countries. The event lasted for about an hour...

  12. Anyone has any idea when are the oath ceremonies in fairfax, VA? I passed my interview for citizenship last tuesday june 11th, 2013 at the fairfax office....any ideas of how long yours took for oath in VA? Dates?

I live in NY so i cant really answer your question, but i just want to note something. A friend of mine who lives in the same city where I live didnt go to the same oath location where im going. his case took 3 weeks between the approval and the oat day. he was sent to another city to take it. but it is gonna take me around 2 months to get to mine which is in the city where i live. I think this applies everywhere. USCIS gives u either the earliest date or the closest location depending on what's available.

If fairfax is a big city with lots of immigrants, the processing times might be predictable....i hope someone jumps in to answer ur question.

  13. I can't comment on VA dates, but it took 2 weeks for me in NY.

I live in Upstate NY. I had my interview on May 29th and got the approval on June 10th and my oath ceremony is on August 7th! It is almost 2 months between the approval and the oath date! Well, I live in a small city. Probably there are two or three ceremonies a year here. I could have taken the oath earlier if my file was sent to a bigger city where they hold oath ceremonies more frequently. No complaints though! I'd much rather walk to the oath rather than drive for 4 or 5 hours. It feels a little bit disappoting to have to wait for 2 more months to become a proud citizen of the USA, but we have waited for years for this moment anyway! 2 months shouldnt be that much of a wait...

From people's timelines in different states, it seems that most people wait between 3 and 5 weeks to get to the oath ceremony. Lucky cases get same day oath or less than 3 weeks. But there are some cases that have to wait for 8 weeks or even more (like mine).

Updating my status! I just received my oath letter!

  15. True! I personally didnt file taxes for 2010 and 2011 because my wife and I had low income. I quoted IRS website (minimum requirement to file jointly) and took with me to the interview sheets of paper with detailed income information for those two years (letters from former employers) as well as my email communication with IRS regarding my income. USCIS officer didnt bother to look at the sheets. USCIS officer asked me the standard question "have you ever failed to file a required income tax", I said "yes" and she asked me to explain and I explained my income situation during those two years. She didnt ask for any documentation though. She commented something like " I also think that you didnt file because you were outside of the country". I nodded my head "YES". Then she moved on...

Notice the question says "required income tax". I said "Yes" to the question even if I wasn't required to file based on IRS requirements because I wanted to be on the safe side and also because I had an explanation.

If you didnt file because of your low income, you are fine! As long as you have a valid explanation. You can't be denied US citizenship because you are broke! That's a form of discrimination against poor people.

My immigration status now is "in que to take the oath...". My N400 is marriage based.

  16. Hello guys I've been a Greencard holder since July 2007..

last November 27,2010.. I needed to go to philippines cause of my grandmother (70yrs old) being very sick because of her brain tumor..

and Around April 2011 I was about to go back to United States but she accidentally fell on the stairs and broke her hips and neck.. she can't move and needed surgery..

So i need to take care of her from April 2011 - November 2, 2011 ... and because of this my stay outside of United states is a total of 11 months and 4 days..

Now I'm applying for my citizenship. what do i need to show them in order for me to prove that i didn't ignored my resident here??

I live with my parents and doesn't have a job from 2010-2012 cause i was home studying. No tax return from 2010-2012 either.

The only thing I have is the letter from the doctor in the philippines and a letter from my mom saying that I took care of my Grandmother from Nov 2010-2011 that I showed to Immigration Officer when I got back here in United States..

And A tax return from 2008 and 2009 and 4 credit cards that I'm paying every month since i left the United States...

Is this enough prove that I didn't ignored my resident here? My mother is a US Citizen is her tax return and residency gonna help me prove it to the IO?

can you guys help me please?? I really need to be US Citizen..

I was in a worse situation and I just got scheduled to take my oath. I was away for 364 days at one time and for 11 months a few months before that trip. I didnt file taxes that year and I didnt have a lease here in the US while being away for almost a year. I was away on a tourist visa to a third country (i wasnt in my home country). I was with my wife (US citizen) who was conducting some academic research (she was affilated with with a US university). During my time abroad, I took temporary employment and we had a lease there and i enrolled in a distance learning program at university in that country. The officer during the interview examined my timeline very carefully and asked lots and lots of questions.

I returned from that that long trip about 2 years ago and I am fully settled back and paid taxes for the past year etc etc...

To make my case, i submitted the following (in addition to the initial evidence for marriage based N-400):

1-cover letter signed by both myself and wife explaining in details my where abouts and the nature of her work and reasons why we both didnt file taxes.

2-detailed income information for the year I was abroad with copies of my communication with IRS about attempting to file taxes (never did because IRS guidelines exempt people who make less than a particular income from paying taxes).

3-documents from my wife's school detailing the nature of her research abroad and its time frame.

4-leases and tax information for the year after i returned from the long trip.

5-copy of my communication with the US consulate in my country about the problems I had in buying a plane ticket with an expired GC stamp in my passport (airlines refused to sell tickets to me wich delayed my trip back even more). This happened in my country because i traveled back there briefly from the third country where i lived with my wife.

6-bank and credit card statements (dont have driver's lisence).

7-a notice of rejection of application for travel permit (applied for one but wasnt issued because of a problem with the check).

I asked two lawyers about my chances and they both werent that sure about getting an approval...they both gave me helpful feedback!

Maybe u should ask a lawyer! people here answer out of experienc, but lawyers base their feedback on the law! especially experienced lawyers.

my only advice is that u need to be honest! never ever try to hide anything or lie...just state the facts and present the evidence that u have.

i wasnt approved during my interview. i got the decision cant be made statement. while preparing more evidence to send in case uscis requests it, my status changed to inline to take the oath (10 days after the interview). the interview itself was smooth...no issues at all. i answered the officers questions and asked for clarifications when i didnt quite understand the questions. i was to the point and didnt argue or interrupt the officer. my whole interview was about 20 minutes.

    Good luck!
