  1. Can anyone give me information about UK residence status for ex-pats, or links to previous discussions?

Now that I'm a permanent resident in the US, I'm wondering if I need to do anything official to change my residence status in the UK.

Also, I'm wondering what I can do with money in my British bank account. Many British banks restrict investments to permanent UK residents. It seems like I'd have to choose between lying about my UK residence status or leaving my money idle in a checking account. (I could transfer it to a US account and invest it here, but I want to keep it in the UK.)

Thanks for any advice or suggestions!

  2. Thanks to everyone for pointing out the flaws in my idea. At least I'm better informed now!

As for 'no-frills' ... given the choice, I'd fly Virgin every time, they have the right idea of customer service.

But it's hard to splurge on transatlantic tickets for your airline of choice WHEN YOUR COUNTRY OF RESIDENCE WON'T LET YOU EARN A DAY'S WAGE!

Thank F the EAD just came through, maybe I'll treat myself to a Virgin flight after all.

  3. Hello Brits,

Zoom, a transatlantic no-frills airline, has just launched flights between Gatwick and New York - yay!

I want to fly NY-GTW-NY. Now, the US FAA has decided that people in the US are not allowed to buy tickets for Zoom. But I can buy tickets as if I were in the UK, so I can buy a GTW-NY-GTW return and a GTW-NY single - I just wouldn't use the first leg of the return - and it would still be cheaper than most transatlantic flights.

But have I missed anything? Is there any reason why this wouldn't work?

    Thanks!

Wow - if those are the words you leave in, the mind boggles at what the removed words might be...

  5. Hey,

I was very suprised to recieve a letter form USCIS yesterday welcoming my fiance to the United States. In the letter they issued an alien number for her and said that she would receive the conditional green card in less than three weeks. Needless to say, I was shocked. My dealings with these people have never been that easy. So why no interview? Our case was sent to the california service center to speed things up, but i had no idea they would eliminate the interview!!! So my next question is can she begin looking for work??? I did fill out a EAD (I-795) do I really need to wait on this if I have the A-number and a letter from the Department of homeland security welcoming her to the United States. Finally, can she visit her family in EL Salvador If she has her conditional green card or must she wait for the permanent ten year card.

    Thanks

    Daniel

Lucky you - can't say I'm not jealous!

Some cases transferred to CSC are exempted from interviews, but who knows how they decide which.

Once you have the green card, you can work and leave/re-enter the country; you don't need EAD or AP.

But your letter isn't a green card, so you need to wait just a little longer. Also, to work, your fiancee will need a new SSN with DHS restrictions removed.

    Congratulations on your good news!

  6. ... told us the FBI had informed the embassy on March 20th ( the day of my interview) that they were unable to read the fingerprints

Interesting, very interesting. We're having problems with fingerprinting at the moment - well, to be accurate, the Federal Bureau of Incompetence is having problems. (Check out our timeline below.)

I assumed my fingerprints were approved by the embassy because it was a set for State and DHS. But you say it's for the FBI? Hmm. So why were my fingerprints ok for the FBI four months ago and no good now?

Good luck with your application, Brooklyn23 - at least your problem is with the machinery, not your actual prints.

  7. I've been wondering whether anyone has entered the U.S. from Canada via Greyhound using their K1? If so how did it go and how long did it take? It already takes long enough to go through customs when you're on a full bus so just wondering if it would hold them up etc. Especially if the officers don't really tend to have the experience having someone enter on a K1. Just something I've been curious about.

Normally at POE, you have to queue at immigration as usual. When it's your turn, you tell them you're immigrating and you have to go to a different area and hand over your envelope of documents. An immigration officer reviews your documents then summons you for some questions. The paperwork is processed. Then you proceed to customs like everyone else.

Even assuming that an immigration officer is able to review your documents straight away (ie. there's no queue) and that there are no problems with your case, it's extremely unlikely your bus will still be waiting for you by the time you get out.

But maybe Greyhound would let you get on the next bus that comes along (if there's a space)?

  8. I've been looking for Irn Bru, but have found out that it's contraband in the United States since the company won't list their ingredients. That would have been awesome because he really misses Irn Bru. Oh well, I guess he'll have to do without that particular one.

Interesting - I was in a British goods store in Arizona a few weeks ago and they had a shelf full of Irn Bru. Are you sure about the law? Surely it would prohibit Coca-Cola too?

  9. I didn't know biometrics was this complicated. Did you had to pay three times for each appointment?

I think it's normally straightforward - most people turn up, have their fingerprints taken, their photo take and go home. That's it. But of course there are some cases that have problems...

I've only been charged for the first set of biometrics. The other appointments were free.

(But that doesn't take into account the cost of my wife taking the day off work and hiring a car to drive me to Hartford.)

  10. I had my fingerprints taken for biometrics - no problem. But I've just received a new appointment, stating that:

"The FBI was unable to process your fingerprint card. ... it will be necessary to have your fingerprints re-taken. This will be completed at no additional expense to you."

#######? There was nothing wrong when my prints were taken, but the FBI's computer doesn't like them, so I have to fork out more money to get to Hartford CT again, to have another fingerprint card taken.

And with every likelihood that the FBI won't be able to process the new card either.

Has anybody else had this happen to them? I'd really like to hear about other people's experiences with this.

  11. I am thinking at the moment that I should be maybe booking flights for Friday of the same week although is this long enough?

Congrats on getting to the interview - it is a great feeling, isn't it?

But think twice before booking your flight - a few days later will probably not be enough. Even assuming your visa application is approved at the interview (and this is sometimes a big assumption), there is no guarantee whatsoever the visa will reach you so quickly.

I had my visa on a Thursday and my application was approved there and then. I was then told by an embassy worker that although they couldn't guarantee it, there was a good chance that my visa would be issued that day and couriered the next. Overjoyed - and in hindsight, a bit carried away - I booked my flight for nine days later.

That was a mistake. My visa was not issued for another eight days, then there was the couriering. All told, I had to re-arrange my flight (and I had to pay to do this).

Unless you have some truly compelling reason to travel immediately and have a flight that you wouldn't have to pay to change, I suggest you either wait for your visa before making plans; or make those plans with plenty of time factored in.

    Good luck!

    Good luck!
