  1. So after reading through the comments here is some new information: my sister is 12 years old and I may be able to get the bio parents' permission to bring her to the US. I think the best way may be through a student visa and host her at our house while she is going to school. Looks like there are a lot of private schools in my area (particularly Christian which may appease the parents). If I were to set her up for starting school in August or September, how would I go about getting her a student visa? Can she look at schools first by coming here to visit in the spring, go back to get her visa, and then return before school starts?

  2. Last July I crossed the border and became a permanent resident of the United States through spousal visa. That is all good. My wife and I are happy. Yay.

However...... my parents I found out are getting divorced. I have a half sister in Alberta, Canada that I want to bring over to the United States (particularly Indiana) to live with us for at least a year (but probably until she is older). The situation sucks, but my parents could feed her and minimally take care of her (but I don't want her to grow up in that environment). I am looking into legal guardianship and possibly adoption options and will discuss with local family court in Edmonton, Alberta to see if it is possible to place her in legal guardianship or adoption status with me and my wife.

What I want to know is what are the paths in legal immigration I can take? Do I have to adopt or is legal guardianship from Alberta enough? Is there a waiting time for her to come over? Is there another path I am not thinking of? Does my wife who is a US born citizen affect this in any way? Could she be a legal guardian and have my sister come over? I am just heart broken over the situation and want to do something to help her.

  3. Hello,

My American wife and I (a Canadian in the spouse based visa process) are getting close to the end of the process. We both live in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada and will be likely moving to a suburb of Indianapolis in the summer. My wife is going to establish domicile soon. We are filling out my paperwork and will either submit it in this weekend or next week before waiting for our consulate visit which will be in the next 1 to 3 months we've been told.

In the meantime, we need to start booking a moving van/company to transport our stuff. We want a company that can move our stuff on  and off the vehicle, move a 2 bedroom's apartment worth of stuff, drive it over the border with our forms, and hold it in a facility of some kind in case we need to wait a few weeks or a month while any final details are sorted out. Any recommendations of moving companies from the Toronto area to Indiana? Should I start booking a moving company 4 months out even though we have not finished the process? Thanks.

  4. My wife is American and I am Canadian. My wife sent in the application for the I-130 in end of February 2017 and it landed in the Nebraska center. I know it is taking longer this year than normal, so we understand it is likely to be processed in the next couple of months (maybe this month?). My wife and I are both living in Toronto as we are both working in Toronto (she has her Canadian permanent resident card), and we hope to move to the US as soon as this process is complete. What we are wondering is:

    1) Roughly how much time is the rest of the process after approval of I-130 form? Are we looking at 1 month? 3 months? 6 months? 1 year? There are some things up here we are considering and that knowledge could really help.

    2) Is there anything we should be preparing now while waiting for I-130?

    3) Does not wife need to get to the US early before I move down there, get a house and job before we move? We may have her family sign the affidavit of support as a backup. We have savings and can probably move and live off of them for some time if need be and I work as a computer engineer so finding work appears to be not that hard according to my research.

    4) What is(are) the form(s) we fill out after the I-130?

    5) Does the criminal background check for me require fingerprints (because you can get them with or without them)?

    Thanks for your help. :)
