This is not related to this topic but I hope you can answer me guys. How do you sign your naturalization certificate? Did you write your full name above the line? Or did you put your signature similar to the one next to your photo? Thank you

I got conflicting answers to this question, but FWIW I signed it as I would normally sign checks or legal documents (i.e. the same as by my photo) and I just got my passport in the mail so the State Dept. were ok with me doing it that way...

Got my oath letter today. Interview set for 02/28. So 20 days from interview.

    Congrats!

Last night I got the text that my oath has been scheduled, so I'm expecting the letter any day, hoping for the 28th as well!

Did your letter come from the a central office, e.g. the one in Missouri, or was it from the local field office? I'm curious, as my interview letter took 10 days to arrive from when it was postmarked to when it showed up at my door.

OMG! My interview was today at 9 as well! And I had a trainee officer interviewing me and someone senior observing. Same experience, down to being told the oath ceremony will be fairly fast!

Cool, glad it went well for you. We probably saw each other in the waiting area :)

I just got the notification that I'm in-line for an oath this morning, so hopefully that means it's all going to go quickly.

  8. Passed the interview today, everything went pretty smoothly. Thought I would write it up quickly for you guys.

    • Appointment was at 0900, arrived about 0830. Airport-like security, then checked in at a main desk. Waiting room was big and had good views north towards the river (office on 7th floor, 250 Marquette). Was called in about 0920 - note that it's a good idea to sit close to the door, as while InfoPass appointments are announced over the PA system & displayed on TVs, for interviews the Officer just shouts your number from the doorway.
    • Interview took about 15-20 minutes. Officer was very businesslike, not unfriendly at all - asked me to stay standing and take an oath to tell the truth, then went through my application, basically asked me to confirm the information on my application (questions like "Where do you live now?", "Are you married?" etc.) and then went through all the Yes/No questions towards the end of the application.
    • Officer noted the corrections made to the form (additional trip outside the US since filing etc.) and then reviewed them with me. Asked about my willingness to take the Oath at the naturalization ceremony.
    • Was asked to read "Who elects Congress" and write "The people elect Congress".
    • Civics questions were printed on a piece of paper in the file, Officer asked the first 6 and stopped when I got them all correct:
      • Who wrote the Declaration of Independence?
      • What is the party of the President?
      • What are the two main political parties in the US?
      • Who is the Commander in Chief of the Military?
      • Name three of the 13 original states.
      • Name a country that borders Mexico.
    • Was asked to sign a piece paper with my name etc. confirming the info was correct for the naturalization certificate, then was asked to sign the back page of the N400 saying that I'm willing to take the Oath, and that was it. Was told to expect a notice for Oath ceremony in the next week or two, but that there wasn't a big backlog waiting for oaths so I might still get in a ceremony later this month.

One final note, there was a trainee officer observing the interview, so they may be hiring more to enable things to move more quickly? Hope so, got my fingers crossed for all you guys :)

  9. Just got my interview letter today for February 6th:

seriously? your FP was 1/2017 . it's still no  interview letter  yet now ?

usually people are in line for interview right after biometrics, though "in-line" simply means the background check is starting now and you are in the line waiting for months for FBI clear and interview being scheduled.

AFAIK, in-line means the name check (i.e. FBI part) is complete and the file will go to the local FO to start the interview scheduling process.

cybermax is right on the money with this one - I just got put in line today, my PD is Dec 22, 2016

Also, I've been periodically keeping track of ~200 cases around mine. Of the 19 cases which were still in 'Fingerprint Scheduled' status, 17 of them moved to 'In-Line' today, right before the 1-yr deadline - in other words about 90% as cybermax stated.

Hopefully this gives a few of you some encouragement for your cases!

    1. If you are stuck, and have not been stuck for a year (count from the date you submitted your application). So you are fine, nothing you can do but wait. Your case is gonna be automatically cleared when it approaches 1 year. This happened to most of cases ( > 90% )

  13. Just got the email from USCIS, in line as of today (364 days since my PD) - a nice Christmas present

  14. Thanks marcusa for starting the MSP-specific tracker - I added my info, as far as I can remember it. I'm almost at a year, heard nothing since biometrics but given the backlog at the MSP office I don't know that there's much to do but wait...

does MSP field office handle more N400 applications than any other field office crossing the country ?

I was curious about this question so I took a look at some data - for those so inclined, the USCIS publishes quarterly data on N400 applications here: https://www.uscis.gov/tools/reports-studies/immigration-forms-data/data-set-form-n-400-application-naturalization

The latest data set is from FY17 Q3 (Apr-Jun 2017), and based on applications received during that time period, the MSP office was 27th out of all field offices (84) in number of applications received.

I also looked at the population of each state vs. the number of field offices as a (poor) approximation for volume of workload at each office - by this measure Minnesota is 7th. As I previously mentioned, the MSP office covers ~2.5 % of the US population (about 8.5 MM), but only handles ~1.5 % of the total N400 applications.

Of course, having all this data is nice but we can't really do anything practical with it, other than analyze it in various ways to keep ourselves busy while we wait for our applications to be processed :)

    ANY UPDATES YET?

MSP is not moving quickly right now. According to the 11/7 updated stats, as of 9/30/17 they are processing N400s from 10/12/16, so they're running at almost a year. They slipped significantly in September, only managing to get through 5 days worth of applications (as of 08/31/17 they were processing 10/07/16), so with a late December PD I'm not holding my breath.

That said, there are a few MSP folks on here who've had interviews (or interview notices) recently with PDs in the Dec/Jan timeframe, so there is some movement at least.

BTW, I saw the earlier comment about the large area covered by the MSP office. Based on the info I could find, the office covers ~2.5% of the US population, but only handles ~1.5% of the total N400 applications, so it's not a disproportionately high-workload office - can't speak to resourcing vs. case load though...

  17. I filed in December 2016 and I've been in "Fingerprint appointment scheduled" since January 9th, so I decided to take a look at some data today, which has made me feel (a little) better about the situation.

I checked 100 case numbers either side of mine and excluding those cases that were rejected for improper filing and a couple other minor categories the breakdown was:

    Oath notice mailed/ceremony scheduled: 53 %

    Fingerprint appointment scheduled: 31 %

    Interview scheduled: 13 %

    In-line for interview: 3 %

So there is a significant minority still in the fingerprint stage. Can't speak to how broadly applicable these stats are given that the USCIS gets ~3500 N400 applications every working day...

I also looked at overall USCIS performance for the past 4 years based on the stats from their website, and there has been a very significant increase in case backlog over the past year and a half so I think this delay may not be much more complicated than a very large workload leading to very extended processing times. Also seems like approvals start each FY low then pick up and peak in Q4 each year, so hopefully FY17 Q4 (Jul-Sep 2017) numbers show additional improvement and we'll all be done soon.

All that said, I also calculated when I should expect an interview based on the posted processing times for my FO and how far in advance of the interview the letter typically arrives, and you can be sure if that date come and goes with no letter I'll be on the phone to anyone who'll listen :)
