    curious about this too.

I am bored and want to do something useful while I'm waiting for EAD. I filed my AOS recently and haven't even received NOA-1 yet, only e-notification that they received my payment.

Want to volunteer at local pet shelter. Can I do that? They will only need SSn right? Or they don't even need SSN?

Volunteer at a pet shelter (non-profit) is fine, they usually don't ask to see any document to volunteers.

That part isn't about nationality, it's about residence (the "where you live" kind, not the immigration kind) and you're now considered a resident for that purpose.

    Congratulations on the marriage :)

So, it doesn't really matter if I put my family's address or my actual address on the certificate?

I just received my certified copy and realized that I put my address from Brazil. Because we thought at the time: "we will apply for residency after the wedding, so I am not officially living in my U.S. address"...

I've sent the customer copy when we start the application for AOS, about 30 - 45 days ago, and they confirmed, I also already done the biometrics..

  3. Hi friends,

I had a SSN long time ago when I came to the US with a J1 for few months and only used it in that time (more than 10 years ago). Now I filled my AOS and didn't remember this number (even went to the SS Office a couple of times before filling to get this number and they didn't want to give me before I adjust status [they said after I get my resident status to go there again with the documentation]). After I mailed everything, I was biking near to the office again in a random day and decided to walk in, talked to another lady and she said I was lucky and she was going to give my number. So she just looked in the system with my name and date of birth... grrr

Now how can I add this information / number to my process / forms?

    Thank you!!

  4. Hello friends,

    Just a quick feedback:

I didn't find anything about certified copy of the marriage license on the USCIS document requirements, so we've sent the customer copy + a statement of my husband telling that our official document will be available only in a couple of weeks (we married at one of the L.A. Courthouses and they take 6 - 8 weeks to send the formal documents, after the marriage). They accepted our application. :)

First, as others noted, the SSN is for life.

Second, you do not need an SSN for health insurance. Most places will request this (and may require it if you have one, like you do) but if you prod enough then they can add somebody without an SSN.

Exactly, I think it is kind of odd that they are requiring one, since we already explained my situation.

But I was more concern when they wrote us: "she will be contacted by IRS and/or CMS for not providing a SSN. (health insurance plans are regulated by IRS)".

I don't want to have any potential problems. So if I can just use the one I already have, will be great. :)

  6. Hello my dear friends,

I've just filled the AOS petition (and my husband the I-30). And he wants already to add me on his health insurance of his company. But they are asking for my SSN, we explain that I am a foreigner, applying for residency, and they answer:

"I actually just heard back from our insurance broker. She said we can enroll your wife, but note there will be a form (legal document) for her to fill out stating why she doesn’t have a SSN and she will be contacted by IRS and/or CMS for not providing a SSN. (health insurance plans are regulated by IRS)."

Well, I do have a SSN, I got it more than ten years ago and only used for a couple of months in the US (with a J1 visa), but I am not sure if its OK to use this number.. I went to the Social Security office already 3 times, called a couple and nobody has the answer for me..

Does anyone here has / had the same or similar experience and please can advice me?

    I really appreciate.

    Thank you!!!

  7. Hi,

I am marrying next Friday (I am a B2 [been here already 5 months], and I will apply for adjustment of status after that, my bf is a USC).

My mom and his mom live abroad and are coming to see the ceremony (will be only a courthouse wedding), and will spend 3 weeks with us in total.

Is it OK for them to tell at port of entry that they are coming to celebrate our wedding? I need to write a letter to the office (because they don't speak English).

    Many thanks.
