Flew back into the U.S. today from Canada and cleared U.S. customs in Vancouver prior to the U.S leg of our journey. I was so nervous but skipped the kiosks like everyone here said, got sent straight to an officer, pulled out the extension letter, and before I could even hand it to him he recognized it and said, "Looks like you're travelling on the good old extension letter!" He said they've been seeing a lot of them lately and he also said he prefers the letter to the I-551 stamp because he can process the letter right at the desk, unlike the stamp, which he said would have to be done in the back at secondary...I thought that was interesting. We were through customs in 2 minutes. If only it would always be so easy and all officers would know what to do with it!!

    Good news bro. Thx

As long as your extension letter has not expired (1 year past the date of your current GC expiry) you can travel with the letter/expired green card.

You may have to go to secondary inspection, but it is painless... just a longer wait.

I have travelled seven times on extension letter and only went to secondary twice. Once when i first used the letter and the last time when i entered (I think because i was approved while out of the country).

Thx jptl85 thank you soo much. In planning to travel this Wednesday with extension letter and an expired GC. And I'm sooooooo worry. This will be my first travel

    Hello everyone!

I'm an April 2017 filer and plan to be out of the country for 3 weeks in October. My concern is that I may hear back from USCIS around this time. Is this the time we should be expecting interview or possible RFE notices? I filed with Vermont SC and knowing the backlog, should I be concerned? Does anyone know around when they get back with a reply if filed in April '17? Also, will the interview notice and RFE show up in My Online Case Status?

    Thanks!!

Hi Milad. Is this your first travel outside with NOA. and if you can tell me where are you from thx.

It's not your extension letter date, if I am correct it  is your expired GC, add a year on it after the expiry date and thats when you will need to go for a stamp for travelling.   So if you travel next year then about 2 or 3 weeks before travel you need to go and get your stamp or when your GC is expired, plus one.  Be sure to take your travel itinerary with you as prove of your vacation, I tend to cover all bases, so they can't give me the run around.

Ok my GC expired August 21st 2017. I'm gonna travel home September 6th 2017. and back here September 24th 2017. The thing that in my country they don't recognize the extension letter that's why I made an appointment with USCIS Monday 28th 2017 to get my passport stamped. Do you thing they will stamp it or not. Thank you again you are sooo kind and helpful

Depends on when you're travelling and how long for. That letter along with your expired GC should be good for a year after the expiry date on your Green card. It basically extends the expired card for a year. If you are due to travel when that year is up then you will need to make an info pass to get a stamp in your passport.

Oh Shell20 thank you sooo much. Yes my extension letter will expire August 2018. And I will travel September 6 for 15 days.

Not sure which service centre you mean.  VSC are processing August, July, June the whole lot.  Today according to visa journey CSC have processed a case from September I would think most cases will be processed within a year. If you need to travel then you will need an i551 stamp in your passport or on a card if your passport has expired.  I feel that you probably wont need to do that, but Im the ever eternal optimist believing that sooner or later they will catch up to the 6 month processing time they have said in the past they hope to achieve.

I have the extension letter do you think that I can travel with. Or I have to stamp my passport thank you.

I came back from Europe on Friday. Not everything was very smooth. I was flying from Moscow to Helsinki and then to Chicago. In Moscow the airline agent had to ask her manager about my GC and NOA because she wasn't able to enter the GC expiration date. The manager reviewed the NOA and told the agent to enter my the expiration date one year ahead. Then in Helsinki, when I showed my boarding pass to the agent by the gate, he said to step aside ( there were also some other people form my flight form Moscow). The security officer came to us and said that we were chosen for random check. They made some closed stands by the gate. And each of us went there and they checked your bags. And then the security officer took me to the gate and said that everything was good. The airline agent checked something in the system and reprinted my boarding pass. And I don't know why, but he changed my seat to business class!! LOL! So finally, in Chicago the officer asked if my GC is expired. I said yes. He said I'm gonna send you to secondary so that they can verify the letter but dont worry. He asked where I work, took my fingerprints and photo and that's it. I went to a small room with another officer. I was there like for 2 minutes. And then he called my name and said I'm good to go!

Ohhhhh thx for sharing your experience bro. I feel better no and i wana go to see my lovely mom

They do care, as do most countries that require people residing in a country other than that of their citizenship.

From the UK visa application (page 12):

In the case of an expired green card during RoC, they'd want to see the green card and the extension letter demonstrating an additional year of validity.

Any experience out there entering the US on expired green card + extension letter after receiving I-751 NOA2?

We're away in Europe, scheduled to fly back in about a week. We received the I-751 NOA2 yesterday dated 8/15. There is language on the notice that's a little scary (see attachment). I suspect this is more for people whose non immigrant visas are getting canceled upon being granted permanent residency but thought I'd check here. Do we need to worry about this or can we just go in with expired green card + extension letter while the new green card is likely sitting in our mailbox at home?

Did you travel with NOA1 or not. If yes was it easy to come back. Thx

    Hi guys,

I visited the USCIS office and they didnt stamp the I 55 stamp saying that it is meant for folks whose cards expiry date is closer to an year or more. So am  going to risk travelling on the expired green card, NOA1, marriage cert and the CBP airlines carrier page 38 printout. Will update on how it goes. God has it all under control.

Pleas just tell us what happens when you come back. Good luck bro. Be safe
