I lived without a car for more than a year. It is very cumbersome since Houston is not a small city and the public transportation systems is not very great. But hey, i still caught the bus or the metro rail when i had to, then took my lessons (my husband taught me well) got my license and this time was also helpful to save money and then buy the car.

So if you want to travel at your convenience in houston, then you have to get yourself a car. But till the time you learn how to, rent a place nea where you work or like Tbone stated live near a transit center to get your bus or train to your work place. Uber and Lyft are also available for days you miss that bus or train.

Get here, find a place that makes sense and then take your driving lessons.

Thank you, TomEn! Im glad to hear there’s Uber there. But is it pricey if i take Uber? And also, how hard is it to purchase a car, be it a brand new or a second-hand one, in Houston? I come from the Philippines and I obviously do not have any credit record yet..

Depending upon where you live and work, you'll either need a car now or can get by without one for a little while.

You MUST live near the bus/rail lines, or have a dependable way to get between your home and the nearest stop.

If you'll be working in the Texas Medical Center, the area is well-served by light rail and buses.

If you'll be working elsewhere, you should research the transit options beforehand.

The Human Resources department of your hiring institution might be able to help with these.

In regard to the essence of your question, driving a car is ultimately an absolute necessity in the Houston area.

Do you know where you'll be working, living, or both?

Thank, TboneTx! I will be working at Houston Methodist Hospital. Do you know if there are place to stay there that is just a walking distance to the hosp? Or if public transport is not difficult to find there?

I stayed in Houston a few days last year and had no issues with the public transport (the light rail system in particular I thought was quite funky). Buses and light rail were numerous and (mostly) on-time.

I used an app called Moovit, which is basically Google Maps but for public transport. You tell it where you are, where you want to go, and it tells you which bus or train to catch, when to get off, etc. It's a great little app; I highly recommend it if you're in an area it supports.

Thank you, Hypnos! Im definitely downloading that app!😀

  4. Hi! Will it be a problem if when I arrive at Houston Texas I still do not know how to drive a car? I will be working there as a nurse. I will be transporting almost everyday, but I heard their public transport is not as good as the other cities, hence I will be needing to buy my own car. But the problem is, i still do not know how to drive. But im planning to take driving lessons immediately upon arriving there. How big of a problem will it cost me if i only start practice driving there? Please please i need some insights guys..

  5. Hi good day! I have a question, is it required to bring my immunization record on my interview date?or is it just fine to bring the medical exam result except for the immunization record? I am already done with my medical exam but Im a afraid I still wouldnt be given immunization shots because i still have to take a pregnancy test prior to immunization, since the doctors have to make sure that i am not pregnant by the time they give the shot. My problem here is, i may not be immunized before my interview since there's a specific date that was given to me by the doctor until i can do the pregnancy test at SLEC. The doctor at SLEC assured me that it wont affect the result of my visa interview but it is really necessary to bring the record upon departure so i could cross the border. Thats according to the doctor. Im really anxious right now. Can someone pls enlighten me even more :(

  6. Hello everyone! I already got an email from NVC that they have recieved all the required documents for my visa case and that Im already in queue for the interview appointment, however when I checked my visa status on CEAC it says that it's still at NVC. Isn't it supposed to say CASE COMPLETE since it's already done? Or does it usually take several days for it to finally change to CASE COMPLETE?  Hope you guys can enlighten me. Thanks!

    This might help:  https://travel.state.gov/content/visas/en/immigrate/immigrant-process/interview.html

Once you get your interview notice you can start to prepare for the interview.  Some documents you could collect now if you haven't already.

Do follow the embassy instructions letter (link within the below link)

Thank you hank. You've been very responsive!

  8. Hello everyone! I am under Eb-3 category. Im just wondering, about how many days/months should I wait before I can schedule for an interview after my documents have been reviewed by the NVC? Also, I understand that the review of documents could take an ample time, like 60days. Are there instances that the review only took 30days or even less? Thank you.

Based on a cousin's experience, (she lives in San Diego, Ca) yes, you can continue your TB prophylaxis treatment in the US, and for free. The local health department contacted her a few days upon her arrival, which was last year, requesting her to undergo a series of tests and given her TB meds (same drugs as in the Ph) for some duration, I forgot how many months. Then they regularly set appointments for her to go to same clinic for routine lab works and to get med packets until treatment is done, had personally went with her one time and was surprise that there were a lot of clients there, mostly immigrants.  She had the same case, marked CXR but negative sputum culture. Although she didn't start the treatment via a private doctor but with SLEC.

Thank you for sunnyflake for answering. Im starting to get anxious since I will be undergoing medical exam anytime soon. Just so afraid of having acquired latent Tb,God forbid, since im exposed to patients with active TB in the hospital. Somehow,i am relieved by your reply. Thank you!
