    Hi everyone,

I am a U.S. citizen by birth.  I adopted my Mexican wife's biological son four years into our marriage while we were all living in Mexico.  The adoption took place entirely in Mexico and my son's birth certificate now has me listed as the father.

My son was issued an IR2 visa, which he continues to have to this date.  I would now like to secure his U.S. citizenship.  Did he become a citizen upon entering the U.S.?  I am unclear on whether I must apply for his certificate of citizenship by filing the N-600 (and paying the exorbitant fee of $1,170) or apply for his U.S. passport without the certificate?  Due to the huge difference in price between filing the N-600 and applying for the passport, I'd much prefer the latter.

Is the certificate of citizenship a necessary next step in securing my son's citizenship?

    Thanks for your feedback!

Do u have any update on your case about getting passport for your child? I may have the same case as u.

Im a US citizen, now my wife(IR1) and kid(IR2) are gonna be here by March, Do I have to apply for my kid's US passport right after they get here?

    What are the requirements?

Do i have to get her a social security # first?

And wait for their greencard to arrive before passport application?

She is on elementary at 3rd Grade, how do I choose a school for her? Do i have to contact my county, or are they gonna let me know?

    Thank you!

Do u have any update on ur case, I have a similar case like u. Did u get passports right away or did you pay the $165 fee?

    Hi Everyone,

My stepdaughter was recently appoved for an IR2 visa and recieved the visa packet. The instructions request payment of the USCIS Immigrant fee of $165 prior to entry to the US. Is this necessary since she will be covered under the Child Citizenship Act of 2000? Or do we need to pay it regardless?

If necessary, can it be paid after entry, or will entry be denied if not paid prior to travel?

Hi! May I ask for an update on your case? I have the same case I wanted to know if you paid the $165 fee and did you file N600? Does your stepdaughter has a US passport? Did she travel already outside the US? Sorry I have too many questions. Coz I am in the same boat.thank you and looking forward to your reply.

We didn't pay the fee either for my stepson and stepdaughter before they left for the US (in June 2014). We aren't planning to pay it at all. Their SS cards came in the mail about 10 days after they arrived in the US, we never requested them. We applied for their US passports, using the SSN, the visa (entry-stamped by CBP), and foreign birth cartificate (with certified translation).

Make sure you send in the foreign passport with visa and entry stamp (not just a photocopy) when applying. The idiot worker at the post office who took our applications said that a photocopy will do, and we got an RFE, and it took 8 weeks to get my stepdaughter's passport (my stepson's is still processing).

We received a letter from Dept of State for each of my stepkids for the missing fee payment. Ignored.

Hi! I just want to know the update on not paying the immigrant fee. Did your step children travel outside the US? Did they have any trouble coming back? I did the same thing I didnt pay for the immigrant fee, I am worried if they travel outside there will be a problem when they come back at the airport. Please help, I need some inputs. Thank you so much

I would. Apply for passport. Dont leave usa until passport is in hand.

My daughters have US passport, will there be no problem when they travel outside US? Will the immigration in the airport will hold them if they are entering coz in the system is still GC? Is ur child also came here in the US under IR2 visa and you just applied for US passport right after they enter US?

He has a passport. Use that to enter and exit the usa.  Why would a usc need a fallback?

Thanks for replying, NikLR.. Coz when they verify the status of my daughter in the USCIS she is still GC holder. IO told me that I need to pay $165 and file for N600 which is $1k+ is current fee. And thats why Im doing a research if possible for me to avoid that fee. If there would be no problem in the future ill just disregard what the IO ask me to do.

Yes if you are a USC and your legitimate child is in your physical custody, an lpr, and under 18, they are a citizen upon lpr status (arrival for ir2.) Do not pay the $165 fee and apply for a passport

Hi! Can they travel outside the US and come back without any hassle if I didnt pay for $165 fee and N600 Certificate of Naturalization? Is your child also an IR2 visa when they came here in the US? I am just asking coz Im looking for someone that has the same situation as mine so I can have some views. Thanks in advance

Hi, when my son arrived,  I did not pay for the green card fee of $165 instead I applied for the passport right away and he got issued a US passport. But the USCIS sent us 2 notices asking for the green card payment. So to avoid future hassles, I paid it and after few weeks we got the greencard by mail. On December 2016, before the fees went up from $600 to almost double, I applied for N600 just to have a peace of mind. It has been 3 months since and we only got the NOA that they have received it. It is said that it takes 6 months to process. My son wants to go home to visit but I said he got to wait because he might be called soon for the oath. I hope this helps and let me know if you have any more questions. Have a great day.

Thank you for replying Octagon, i didnt pay for the immigrant fee and N600. I want to know if what will be the problem in the future if Im not gonna pay for the fee. They have US passport, can they travel outside the US and come back without any hassle? Is there someone here with the same case as mine? Please help. Thank you☺️

Good day everyone! I hope everyone is enjoying the season as we are here in the east coast. My question is regarding my son who got approved for an IR2 visa in the Philippines. He will be coming sometime on August and his 18th birthday is end of October this year. I got my ctizenship (being married to US citizen) on June of this year, took an oath thesame day and got my Cert of NaturaliZation. My son is my legitimate son from my previous marriage. Will he be able to become automatic citizen when he arrives here? It is like he is arriving 2 months prior to his 18th birthday. And can he apply for US passport when he arrives here? What are the requirements and does he need to apply for certificate of citizenship? Has anybody out there in thesame situation or was? I hope to gather inputs here and sorry for the long post. Have a great day everyone!

Hi! I just want know the update on your son. So when he enters the US did you pay for immigrant fee which is $165 and did you also file for N600 Certificate of Citizenship?  I have the same case, my 2 daughters entered the US August 2015 under IR2 visa, after entering the US I went to the local USCIS and asks the next step, the IO from the booth told me that I can just apply them a passport and it is cheaper that way. So I followed his instruction and got a passport but I went to back to the USCIS like this year and officer told me that they are still permanent residence status. That I need to pay for green card fee and N600 to update their system. Did your son travel back to the Philippines and did he encounter a problem when going back in the US? Please I need help..Thank you.
