No, you don't have to wait two weeks. A K-1 is entitled to an SSN simply by virtue of their K-1 status.

    Hypnos, thank you

are you saying that one could apply for SSN before they submit their AOS/ as soon as they arrive in the country?

  2. Hi,

can an anyone please provide some information about applying for a SSN after arriving on a K1 Visa? The social security office states that you need proof of work or EAD, but I understand you can apply two weeks after arriving using your K1 Visa. Is this correct.? Thank you all in advance

It can take a year or longer, though that is extremely unusual, especially before interview.  Usually with security/ name checks, you get to the interview in the normal 5-6 months time frame and then get put in AP (Administrative Processing).  I am going to move your thread to the AP/ Waivers forum; while that is mostly for after-interview stuff, the experts there may have some good input.

Thank you thats very kind of you.

yes its now 9 months and we are still waiting.

i also have a i-130 petition put through by my step mother ( i was adopted when i was 14 ) so maybe thats what they are looking at? or maybe its just because i was born in Iran.

  4. We submitted our I-129 petition for finance visa in Nov 2016, the USCIS website has reviewed it two months ago and it's still waiting for clearance check to be completed. Does anyone know how long this takes? I am starting to think due to our nationalities that this is just a way they suspend people in order to prolong the process. I am thinking about canceling the petition

I am am a British citizen, Iranian born

finance is American citizen Syrian born

    thank you

Aside from the Iranian (even though having a British passport) and Syrian nationalities (even though naturalized),
pharmacology is also under scrutiny under the Bio/Tech checks.
Once the checks are completed they will be repeated during AOS.
The sooner you marry and file AOS the sooner you will be issued a EAD/AP card and the sooner you are able to work with it, even if AOS
will take you years like it has us. Study the AOS guide here on VJ so you will be prepared and know what awaits you.
Subscribe to the AOS forum so you can read the posts that relevant to you, stay one step ahead of each phase and do your research

    and post questions.

Thank you thats very helpful, may i just ask how long it tales roughly to recieve EAD? I've read somewhere between 3-5 months? I am aware that AOS will take a year for conditional then another year for permanent residency , am not so worried about that, its the EAD that matters more to me as a pharmacist to start working with, i wouldn't want to be doing nothing whilst my partner is working to support us.

Can you elaborate on the Bio/Tec check? Thanks

We did, but we are probably not relevant. My finace works for the US government and he gets vetted every couple of years and as for me, I just got a tourist visa back in November so they did a background check then too so I assume that's why we got our approval in 3 months.

    Thats great news :-)

i have had clearance and tourist visa for the last two years as well( despite the fact that i h Ld a British passport) , my partner in the US getts security checks done for her job every year so maybe just maybe ours wont take so long.

    thank you :-)

We went through the security checks (background checks), we received our NOA2 after a year and 10 months. the only thing we did is waiting but we kept calling the USCIS and we called our congressman and made infopass appointments. I wish you good luck.

That has just made me feel so ####### :-( that's means I might have to wait another year before being able to leave for the US

So your security checks took more than a year? Thank you. do you have the right to work now? How long would I have to wait after getting married to be able to work. That's my biggest fear , being housebound.

Sorry to hear that!! Just wondering how did you know that a security check is pending? Did you ever receive a RFE? (I received an REF but it's been more than 2 months since USCIS received my response. I wonder if I am also undergoing such a check)

Hi, we sent an enquiry  online to find out why it was taking so long. The USCIS SAID they are waiting for security checks and until they have them they can't proceed ahead.

  10. Thank you Kozmicblues you are very kind, I think the system is a little prejudice, I left Iran when I was 6, never been back, ,my twin even served in the US military. He Is married to an American  I have nephews and nieces that were born in the US and two other siblings and a step mother who are all citizens.

But I guess I am a threat to national security lol.

  11. That you all for your responses, you have been so helpful.

Janet3, can I just clarify, you said you have been waiting for this clearance since feb? That's 5 months. :-(

its good news that I might not be affected, I used to live in the US but not as a permanent resident, I do have family there, even a step mother who is an American citizen, ( my twin and I were adopted) he also is an American citizen but I left for England for education reasons before I was granted my residency.( a mistake I regret all my life ).

I am a pharmacist here in England and have completed my examination and now registered in the US ( a very long and expensive process ), but since Obama/ Trump's administration I had to obtain a visa and clearance to go see family every time.

my fiancé is a Syrian born AmericN naturalized citizen, so I guess my situation is complicated and no wonder why it might take even longer, I just hope that this is not a way to, deter people and keep them suspended.

    *thank you all
