  1. My fiance and I just went through the interview process in Rio on August 14, 2007. We were very careful in completing all of the forms correctly with the appropriate signatures, notary (where required), etc. and tried to be very thorough in our answers (even if information was duplicated from other forms or previous forms). I met her in Rio and we both brought original documents, copies and other documentation in case there were any questions. We arrived at the consulate, turned in the paper work for review. Waited about 1 1/2 hours and then had her interview with the consulate. We both went in for the interview, the consulate spoke to my fiance in Portuguese and to me in English. There were some very basic questions, when did we meet and how long had we known each other, where did I live and a couple others. During the middle of the interview the consulate cancelled my fiance's tourist visa and a then said everything was fine and come back in two days to pick up the visa after 3pm. I would recommend you arrive right at 3pm because we arrived at 4pm and were too late and had to come back the next day. The process and experience was very smooth and easy even after we requested an extension of time on the approval of the application. The worst part is completing the forms. Also, when you receive the visa you will also receive an sealed envelope that will be opened when you arrive in the U.S. We did not realize this and had nothing to carry the envelope in so I would recommend taking a bag or back pack with you when you pick up the visa so you have something to put this envelope in. Don't worry, if you have done a good job completing the forms and have all the information it should be a relatively painless process.
