    Congrats fellow Philadelphian! :)

If you ever cared to check back in VJ , would you please share your interview experience ?

Were you asked to show any paperwork outside from what you originally had sent in? And any other pointers that you'd like to hash out to help us Philadelphia filers would be highly appreciated.

    Thanks!

@Booze&Blues First thank you. I applied based 3 years rules the paper I submitted with my application was tax transcripts for 2013 2014 2015 some bank statements, apartment lease car insurance cable bills I think that was it. At the interview the officer starts asking me the civic questions and writing and reading part. After he went through the n400 briefly. And he didn't ask for any supporting documents. At the end of the interview he recommended my application for approval and told me to wait for the oath ceremony letter. If you have any questions let me know.

My immigration journey has ended. I took the Oath and became a citizen of this great country on Friday, July 21. I am sharing some details:

    Interview:

I went about 35 minutes before the interview. Had to pass through the Security Check. Removed shoes as they beeped and walked as if I was walking through airport security. Met an Officer at the reception and he directed me to a window where I handed in my interview letter. The Officer took the interview letter and asked me to sit and wait until I am called. I sat down with my document folder. There were about thirty or forty others in the spacious and comfortable reception area. Saw a notice where they said we could use cell phones without disturbing others and started reading the 100 questions again.

I was called in exactly at the scheduled time. The Officer called me and said if my name was pronounced right. I said you did say it right and walked with the Officer. Once in, the Officer said do not sit, but stand and take the Oath. I took the Oath and then sat down. I was first given the Reading Test. Where is the White House? Then I was asked to write, White House is in Washington, D.C.

Then the Civics questions. The Officer said I should get six out of the 10 right. I got the six right and the Officer said you passed the test.

    1.       Who vetoes bills?

    2.       What is your state capital?

    3.       What is the Supreme law of land?

    4.       What is an amendment?

    5.       Whom did USA fight in World War 2?

    6.       What do we pledge allegiance to?

After that, the Officer picked up the N400 and began reviewing the form, line by line. I had asked for a Name Change. Therefore, the officer went over it. Asked me to sign a paper accepting the name change. Then the Officer asked about the nature of my job, how I commute, etc. Then after reviewing everything, the Officer came to the question No. 23 “Have you ever been arrested, cited, or detained…?” I had answered No for this question. So the Officer asked about traffic tickets. I said I was given speeding tickets, but I paid them all and I did not have any dues or issues. Moreover, said I could not recall the dates and I did not put them in. The Officer made some notes on N400.

This question No.23 bothered me a lot just two days before going for the interview. Spent digging through so many forums and the internet about this. I read in one place where USCIS says if the violation is less than $500 in fine, it need not be documented. It didn’t say declared, but said it need not be documented. I wanted to describe that to the Officer. But the Officer moved on quickly. I also went to the DMV and had my driving record copy with me.

The Officer said if I had anything more to add or change in the N400. I said I didn’t have any. Then the Officer said you passed your interview and you are recommended for approval. The Officer escorted me out to the reception area and said you can sit and wait now for your name to be called.

The next two hours were anxious waiting. I sat down and looked at the HGTV channel that was running. Then browsed the net on my phone and finally my name was called. I was given a document where the approval was checked. Then the Officer said here is your Oath letter and said “Congratulations.” I was so exhausted that I barely managed to smile. I said, “Thank you” and walked out of the building slowly. It was a very hot day. I was so exhausted emotionally that I almost crawled to my car. The car was very hot. Therefore, started the AC and waited for ten or fifteen minutes. Then I drove out.

I felt the Officer who interviewed me was very professional and very methodical. Everything in N400 was reviewed. Being completely honest and clear in answering the questions is very important. The Officer also put me at ease especially after taking the Oath.

    Oath Ceremony:

The Oath is in the same big Federal building in Hartford in the District Court. Went in about an hour early. Not really required to go that early. There was another ceremony going on at 10:30. We were all called in at 12:30 sharp. The Officer asked everyone to sit. If somebody did not get a seat, they brought in more chairs. I think there were around 50 of us taking Oath at 12:30 pm. We were asked to hand off the Green Card and the Oath Ceremony letter, which they took. A copy of the Oath and Pledge were given along with a copy of the Rights for Citizens. Then the Officer explained everything about the ceremony and that the Judge would come in soon.

The Judge arrived and we all stood up. We sat down after the Judge took his seat. The Judge made a brief but very elegant speech. Then we were all asked to stand again. After taking the Oath and Pledge we were asked to sit. They called us by name one by one. The Judge came down and handed the certificates. People were allowed to take photographs. It was an august ceremony, but it was a celebration. I am sure many got teary eyed. I got teary eyed as well.

Those who received Certificates were given the option to see the entire ceremony or leave as it pleased them. Quite a few left as soon as they got their certificate and picture. A couple of us stayed on until the end and then we walked out in the end. The whole ceremony lasted two hours. We were given the Certificate, Passport Application, brochures welcoming US Citizens, and about Voting Rights. I didn't have the strength to do the passport on the Oath Day and skipped the Passport bit.

I went to a nice restaurant. Ate some chips and Guacamole, burger and fries. Picked up the car from the Parking Lot on Linden and drove home. The feeling is still sinking in….

    My impressions:

I am not sure if I forgot documentation after Green Card. This submission of N400 and preparation for the interview was lot of stress and pressure. I guess as a permanent resident you forget filling up forms etc. and get into a relaxed mode for a while. Alternatively, I am not sure if the form itself is unlike any other.

The issue of question 23 did not bother me when I applied. However, it bothered as I came closer to the interview as one of my friends said he declared all his speeding tickets. That is when I started searching on the internet and concluded that it is good to be honest if the Officer asked about it and printed out the USCIS guidance on traffic violations and fines.

My Green Card had also expired and that bothered me a bit. However, I checked on the internet and realized that permanent residence status does not expire. It is just the card.

I did take all the documents they asked me to bring for the interview. Preparing them and searching for them at home was very painful. In addition, you have to read the book and prepare for questions. USCIS App and a Questions App by a private developer were helpful. I did not know about the USCIS Phone App for Questions until two days before the interview. Other than my Green Card, Drivers' License, and Passports nothing else was asked.

This forum and the internet as well as the USCIS site is what I relied on for questions and clarifications. The folks who describe their experiences are all those whom I thank and appreciate on forums like Visa Journey. Reading other applicants' experiences was so helpful and supportive. I wanted to take time and I wanted to describe my experience in as much detail as possible so that it can help another applicant on their road to becoming a citizen. I hope what I describe here will be helpful for him or her.

Of all the experiences, the N400 interview experience and the Oath Ceremony are intense and memorable. I found that the Officers are very professional and very methodical. They do their best in vetting applications. Preparing for the test and being clear and truthful in answering the questions is very essential. The experience is exhausting, and stressful. Forums such as these help in keeping your sanity intact!

The Oath ceremony is where you realize what a great country this is and how they treat immigrants who go through so many struggles to get to citizenship. It makes you feel proud and motivates you to become a responsible Citizen of this wonderful country.

Congratulations!!! Very well detailed your experience

OATH CEREMONY Done yesterday! July 12th! :jest:Please update the grid for us. :D

The end was surreal. We're still reeling. Had to celebrate by eating the best burger in Atlanta at 1910 Public House in Lilburn and drinking Sprite from Mexico. We could not have made it these past 7 years without the VisaJourney family!

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

@nathyn, @Jamaican_Gooner, and other ATLers - I normally write detailed accounts of each experience, but this time, I think those of you who are going to the Oath ceremony may prefer to experience it firsthand. So I won't give any spoiler alerts.

    The three things I'll say:

    (1) Feel free to have your family take as many photos and videos. This is one of the rare times a federal building allows this, so GO FOR IT, if you like capturing memories like us.

    (2) Your guests should know that first they'll have to sit in the waiting room on Level 3, before they'll be called down to the Level 2 waiting room. I'd recommend sitting near the stairs on Level 3 (a closed door on the left side of the room right before that short hallway near the middle-front) so that guests can quickly be one of the first to get down to Level 2. And then on Level 2 waiting room, guests should sit closest to the door at the front of right of the room right next to the windows  (I think it's titled "Ceremony Room 1". That door is what all guests will enter through. If you want a "good" seat -- which I'm not sure if there really is one, since guests sit behind the oath takers. I personally stood on the side where my husband was sitting so that I could take all the video and photos that I could. I'm glad I did! We got GREAT shots.

    (3) We arrived 25 minutes in advance of 8am and the parking lot was already virtually full.

Have fun! And choose things that day to celebrate your way.

    Congratulation!!!

I am here to share my interview experience.

My interview was scheduled today 7/13 at 1 PM at Orlando, FL office. I arrived there a little bit before 12 noon. Despite the notice stating not to arrive any earlier than 30 minutes before the interview, I headed in at about 12.15. The parking lot was packed, and the line of people to go through security was getting longer. I later found out there was a naturalization ceremony taking place at 1 pm.

Once I made my way through security, which was completely painless, I went to the registration desk and given my ticket. I was told to sit close to the door where they would call me in as there was a lot of people already there who were there for the ceremony. At approx. 1.05 I got called in and followed the officer into his office. I was sworn in and asked to sit down. He first went through my file, asked if I had traveled outside of the country this year, which I did, and provided him with the itinerary. He asked my name, date of birth, address, my previous addresses, if I were still married to my husband, what was my SSN, if me and my husband lived at the same address, where I worked,... I provided him with marriage certificate and tax statements for the past 5 years. Then we went over a number of questions, such as if I was a terrorist, ever been arrested, participated in genocide,...

Then followed the civics questions. I don't remember all of them, but here are some:

    1. Who was the first President?
    2. Where is Statue of Liberty?
    3. Who is a governor of State of FL?
    4. What is the promise we make when we swear to Pledge of Allegiance?

I don't recall the other two.

Then he made me read a sentence, something to the extend of George Washington was the first President. And made me write President lives in the White House.

After that, he told me I had passed and if I wanted to come to the ceremony on Monday 7/17. I said yes. He congratulated me and I was escorted out. It took about another 30 min to wait for my notice to appear to the ceremony.

I can't believe the time is almost here and I get to be the United States Citizen almost 7 years to the date I first moved here on a K1 visa!

    Congratulations almost there

Vegasbound could you please update my status? Interview and oath date was July 6, 2017.

    Here are some details:

I arrived at the Seattle service centre about 20 minutes ahead of my scheduled interview (which was 8:45). They don't let you check in until 15 minutes before your scheduled time.

I then waited upstairs until about 9:15 and was called back into the labrynth of offices. The officer was really friendly. He had a few chit chat questions and then explained that he would go through my N400 answers, do the tests. I had to swear that i would tell the truth and then we got to it. Nothing had changed on my N-400 since I applied except for my travel to Canada, which I had updated. He asked for a copy of that, which I had with me. I told him that I had pretty much all of the other backup documentation with me (tax returns, IRS transcripts, original birth and marriage certificates, proof of residing with my husband etc etc etc, wow was I OVERprepared!!), and he said that he didn't need to see any of it.

The writing and reading were very simple. Then he asked the civics questions and stopped after 6 correct ones.

He congratulated me on being recommended for naturalization, and he gave me a form stating as such, on which I had to confirm that nothing had changed since my interview (more directed at people who don't take the oath the same day as the interview). He told me that I had missed the cutoff for the day's oath ceremony, but since I live a 2h drive away he had organized a private oath ceremony with his supervisor later in the morning so that I wouldn't have to drive back another day. I was with him for about 20 minutes.

I went back to the waiting room and about 5 minutes later he came back and said that he'd arranged for me to do the 10:30 oath ceremony with the rest of the people scheduled for that day. Yay!

Then they had all of us scheduled to do the oath line up, surrender our green cards and forms, and then gave us a seat assignment and a package with passport application and a copy of the pledge of allegiance and the national anthem on it.

We went into the auditorium downstairs, sat in our assigned seats, watched a few videos about immigrants (I got teary over these!), said the oath and walked across the stage to receive our citizenship certificate. What a cool thing to join 26 people from 14 countries at that ceremony, being officially welcomed to the USA.

I left there about 11:30, so was there for 3h total. The whole thing almost seemed anticlimactic after all of the work to get it done, and the waiting and stressing!

Good luck to those of you still waiting.

    Congratulation!!!

So for some more detailed information regarding my Interview:

I arrived at the Atlanta field office at 6:50am for my 7:15 appointment, went through security and waited in line until the reception opened at 7. I was checked in and asked to go upstairs to the second floor. There I went to another window and was given a ticket number around 7:10am and told to sit down till my number was called. At 7:18 I was called over to door 1 and met the officer that was conducting my interview,  she was very professional and friendly.

I was sworn in and sat down, she asked for my drivers licence, PR Card and all of my passports. She only ever needed my DL and PR Card and didn't look at any of the other documentation I had taken. We made some small talk, my picture and index fingerprints were taken and then she went through my N400 form to confirm everything was correct.

She then handed me a piece of paper to read - "Who was the first President" and then she asked me to write "Washington was the first President".

I was asked six questions, they were:

The House of Representatives has how many voting members?

In What month do we vote for President?

We elect a U.S. Representative for how many years?

Who is the Chief Justice of the United States now?

Who is the "Father of Our Country"?

Name one war fought by the United States in the 1900s

She then told me I had answered all 6 correctly, sorted some more paperwork, asked me to check information on a sheet of paper and initial it. She stapled the photos I had sent with the N400 to the sheet of paper and told me she was recommending me for approval. I was told it would take a while but I'd get an oath letter in the mail if everything passed QC. I was then shown out around 7:45.

If I had time to think I would have asked if a same day oath was possible, but hindsight's a wonderful thing.

Just have to wait some more.

Good luck to everyone else, I'll post back when I receive more information.

    Nice Interview experience. Congratulation

Had my interview today at the Atlanta Field Office and was approved. Everything went pretty smoothly.

Arrived 30 min before my interview @ 1 PM.

I was seen 10 minutes before my appointment.

    My 6 questions were -

Who is the father of the country?

    Name an American Indian tribe?

Who is the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court?

What is the role of the judicial branch?

What are 2 rights of any one living in the US?

Name one war the US participated in the 1900s.

He didnt want my tax returns, just my passports (I had to renew in between filing and the interview)

We spoke a lot about my work - he was very interested in my work...

went through the questions on my application.

Asked me to sign in a few places and approved the application.

Oath letter would be mailed in 2-4 weeks. I have to do the oath at the Federal bldg since I opted for a name change.

All together took about 30 minutes.

    Almost done!

Good luck to everyone else in the journey.

I will update after my oath ceremony.

Haven't been on in awhile but here is my update:

Received mail on May 15 for interview date of June 14.

Day of interview, arrived 40 minutes early at NYC Federal Plaza building.  My schedule was 10:20AM, but was called around 10:40AM.

First was the English test which lasted for 2 minutes.  The ISO office just asked me to repeat a sentence, and to write down the sentence.

Second was the Civics test, got it right the first 6 questions.  But I could remember only 5 of them.

    1. There were 4 amendments on who can vote, what was one of them.

    2. Who is in charge of the Executive Branch of the government.

    3. Who is next in line if the President can no longer serve.

    4. Why do some states have more representatives.

    5.  What is one right from the first amendment.

Third was, the ISO went line by line on my application form and asked the same questions again. Asked for more photos (luckily I brought more in addition to the ones in the application form). And asked If I brought passport photos which I did (thanks to this forum).

Then the ISO said I passed the interview and civics test but he can't made a decision yet because he needs additional documentation. He gave me a list of additional docs to provide, like billing statements that shows both our names, my employment certificate showing who is listed as my "contact person in case of emergency", and any sort of documentation I can provide that shows spouse and I lived in the same home/address the entire duration since I received my residence permit (green card).  This means any billing statements from 2013 the year I received my green card, until this year.

He said I can return on the same day and submit the docs by the window or see him if I wanted to.

So I went home and made a copy of our homeowners insurance which have our names on the document.  Pulled out copies of past bills dated 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017.  Then stopped by at work to get an employment certificate indicating who is listed as my "contact person in case of emergency".   Made it back to Federal Plaza in the afternoon and asked that I see my ISO again.

ISO then asked me to come back into his office and checked my documents..... and congratulated me and asked me to step into the next office to get my swearing in schedule.

I will be sworn in as an American citizen this Friday June 23!

Please update my timeline as follows:

    May 15, received interview letter
    June 14, interview date

    June 23, oathtaking

Good luck to everyone on the forum, and I appreciate all the help that I got and I will be happy to return the favor.

    Thank you @Colorado2016

    Hi! all,

I had my interview today and I was recommended for approval however, due to backlog, they cannot do same day oath taking. I still have to wait for the letter to arrive (within 30 days) to know when will I have the oath taking.

The interview was a breeze as I was scheduled for 7:30am (I was the 1st one to be called) and by 7:49am I’m already done.

I was asked to raise my right hand to swear that I’ll be telling the truth then she proceeded with the interview questions.

    1. Name one of the two longest river in the United States?

    2. Who lived in America before the Europeans arrived?

    3. What do we call the first ten amendments to the Constitution?

    4. When was the Declaration of Independence adopted?

    5. ** I forgot the Question but I answered it correctly.

    6. We elect a President for how many years?

Once we finished the 1st 6 questions, she told me I passed and we proceeded to the reading and writing exam.

Then we went over the questions in the N-400 form. She said she is recommending me for approval only I have to wait for the letter when will oath taking will take place. She signed a paper and gave it to me stating I passed.

Since it’s still early, I chatted a bit with the officer and here are a few notes I can pass along to the VJ community:

Saturday appointment: It is normal to receive a Saturday appointment because of backlog as well as they also receive requests from people who work weekdays to have Saturday appointments.

Travel abroad while waiting for interview date: while going over the trips abroad part of the N-400 form, I gave her my Expedia Itinerary showing I was out of the country for 3 weeks before I received my interview letter. She said that people have the notion that people are not allowed to do that but it’s actually ok to travel provided that you can document and give proof (just like I did) so that they can update their records.

For people with Denver as their field office: they used to do same day oath taking but they rarely do it anymore because of backlog. A few people got lucky yesterday (Friday) and had a same day oath taking but that’s for the few who were scheduled very early.

Will update once I received the oath taking latter.

    Cheers!

    Congrats for the interview

    Hello VJ family,

I had my interview today. It went very well and smoothly. The officer was nice and kind, made me feel relaxed. My opinion of Detroit Field Office has always been favorable and I always had positive experience there. So today was no exception.

I`ll give you the answers instead of the questions I was asked, so that everybody still in line would practice:

    - 435

    - 2

    - George Washington

    - John Roberts

    - WW II

    - November

I was told my case was recommended for approval and affixed with APPROVED stamp.

Then I was told to wait in the lobby. In a about 15-20 minutes, another officer came out and handed me the oath ceremony letter.

I am to appear in Detroit Court on May 15.

I wish good luck to everybody who is still waiting. It`s your turn now :)

I thank the VJ community for its powerful collective knowledge, support and many more things no lawyer can help with.

I will write more when I "turn red" :)

    Congrats!!!!
