How do i update. I am new and have no idea what I'm doing

Hello. I am married to a citizen and have 2young children. Just recently filed for permanent residence and was told i had a 2yr residency requirement. I came in a J1 in 2009 for a yr and went back to my country. I didn't stay long. I was able to switch to a F1 visa to pursue my degree in 2010 and never went back since. I forgot about the 2yr rule and now i can't get my green card till i resolve this 2yr waiver. How do i go about getting one.
