Is your wife now living in the USA? If so, she has to paper file, you can netfile when you're not filing as a resident.

I've never had any problem filling with my husband details, indicating he's not a resident and had no Canadian income.

Just done with my 2016 taxes there... going to mail them out tomorrow.  The international tax office of the CRA is helpful if you still have questions.

My wife is still living in Canada and is still considered a resident and earning income there.

Do you have to continue filing even when there is no Canadian income?  Or do you have income from a Canadian source?

Good info!  Thanks!  I didn't realize it had to be paper filed :-/

As far as what I've read, you still have to file taxes for Canada if you lived there for 183 or more days during that tax year.

  2. Are there any Canadians around who have experience with filing taxes under "married filing separately" ?  My wife can't figure out how to complete her taxes since everything is done electronically, but I don't have a SIN.

We also realized we never sent the Canadian government any documentation of our wedding. We were supposed to do this? Will they question her status of filing as married?

    Great to hear! Congrats!

Nebraska is such a black hole... Looks they are still processing filers from the beginning of AUGUST!?? What a joke. Also, looks like NVC processing times just jumped to 8 weeks instead of the previous 6. Patience, friends!

What does the NVC processing include? Is that the time it takes to get the packet or the time it takes for them to look through the packet once you send it in?

    Hey everyone,

I thought I'd join and say hello! :) My partner and I have been together since 2009, married since 2013  and living in the UK up until last year.

We made the decision to move to the USA, my partner moved back to the states last year got a job and sorted out an apartment; and we filed the petition - we have a priority date of October 14th.

Our petition has been sent to Potomac - as of today, the petition is just showing as 'case was received'...

Anyone else in the same position as me? I see that some people have already been processed! I'm trying my best to be patient but really just want to be out there properly with my other half - all the travel back and forth and distance is pretty tough :(

Don't worry, we're in the same boat!  I filed for my Canadian wife and got the NOA1 on 10/24. Our petition is also at Potomac. It seems like Potomac is currently approving September filings, but on the bright side, they seem to be getting through Sept. quickly!

  5. I'm confused why I can't seem to find processing times for the Potomac Service Center. I filed our I-130 back at the end of October and I'm beginning to feel impatient for my NOA2 to arrive.

I found that YSC = Potomac Service Center based on this website https://egov.uscis.gov/cris/processTimesDisplayInit.do

On this page: http://www.visajourney.com/timeline/  Potomac or YSC isn't on the list.  I also found these charts http://www.visajourney.com/content/ir1cr1historical that don't show YSC either.

Is there a reason why Potomac isn't really listed?

  6. I'm assembling my I-130 packet and I'm worrying that the passport pictures won't be accepted. My fiancee's passport picture was date stamped on the back and it was taken back in August (beyond the "taken within 30 days of the date of this petition"). My passport picture was not date stamped.

Are they serious about the 30 day limit? Should I also have my picture retaken so that it can be date stamped on the back?
